Discuss the online marketing tools that help you to succeed.

  • I really see the theme of high quality relationships and value to the person/site you want to link to.  Of all the responses, I found X-com's most interesting because you are on the other side of the fence.  You are telling us what would prompt you to accept a link.  Lets not forget that the link requires work and attention to put up.  More importantly, you are putting your reputation on the line. I have just done an exhaustive prioritization of links for a client.  I noticed some wonderful opportunities in the top ones, not just for linking, but for partnering and for marketing programs.   I am fairly new to this side of web marketing, and think I've discovered a gold mine of ideas.  Certainly market segments are jumping out at me. I think hard work is also a barrier to entry to the millions of SEOs who would take the automated route.  So, if you are building a quality brand for your clients, they deserve a quality method that will stand the test of time. MY Question:  I'm wondering what you have found to be the link accept rate (%) when you are following the best in class methods we have been talking about here?

  • Sorry, I meant to say subdirectory (domain.com/site). With a subdirectory your new site will benefit from the domain authority of your old site, and your old site will benefit from any links you build to the new site. If you have 2 separate sites, you will be increasing the amount of link building you have to do, but there could be other benefits like branding, risk diversification, etc.

  • If you like wasting your money, continue. There is no value to this service, it is exactly the type of thing (duplicate content on low quality free-for-all sites) the search engines have been working to devalue, deindex. If you want results, focus on getting each piece of your unique content on just one high quality, related website. Do a search on SEOmoz for content marketing, blogger outreach etc or Have a read of these: http://blog.kissmetrics.com/guide-to-guest-blogging/ http://www.copypress.com/blog/outreach-specialists-bible/

  • If you're hoping to appear there, you'd better be good and active on Google+, and a good number of sites, have authorship set up correctly and an awful lot of authority. It's not as simple as having a huge following on Google+, or good authority on several known sites, so as Philipp suggests I'd not be the least surprised to find it is manual.

  • Hi Joel, Bede has provided a terrific answer. I will only add that most Local SEOs I know agree that there is no replacement for manual citation building, because of the benefit of having total control over the whole process yourself. The main benefit of Yext is that they allow you to manage many citations in one place (a nice feature) but there have been some questions in the Local SEO community about the tool's ability to recognize problematic duplicate listings (see:http://www.ngsmarketing.com/why-yext-might-not-be-the-best-fit-for-your-business/) and as citation experts like Darren Shaw of Whitespark have proved, you can typically build many more citations than are covered by Yext's tool. Darren's tool is here: https://www.whitespark.ca/local-citation-finder/ If you don't want to go with doing it yourself or using an automated tool, the third alternative is to hire a citation builder. I believe both Nyagoslav Zhekov (NGSmarketing, linked to above) and Darren Shaw's company do this. Both gentlemen are highly regarded. So, that's a third option.
