Bold & Italics Best Practice?
I am working on an Online Digital Marketing Magazine and many times I am explaining a concept or something about marketing. If I am talking about Topic "A" and I explain what it means and why it is important, I like embolden the topic I am explaining and put the explanation in italics. In my view, this is for the purpose of skimming the article to pick out the more important parts. Additionally, since the topics being explained are the targeted keywords I figured it would add to SEO, I just hope it doesn't hurt rankings but the ever looming over-optimizing threat. Not sure on any quantitative limits on bold and italicized text but would love to see some numbers on this topic. I guess I am approaching this with a usability and reader perspective but everyone is different, and I know someone will look at the article and be like oh no why!>? Please let me know if you think this way or a good reason to stop thinking this way. yzJ18D2.png

E-commerce canonicals on other sites
Well, that makes more sense now !! I didn't read it correctly then. Sorry, my mistake. Well, to address your question in that regards then; 1. If I were you, and you have access to their amazon-like site, code and ability to modify, you could very well implement the canonical tag, and redirect all value and links to your clients domain. I wouldn't count on that other site driving any traffic at later points though once the value shift takes place. Those product pages will become mute. 2. Option 2 -> By keeping both sites open (amazon and client site), you have the possibility of driving multiple sources of traffic for the client domain and products, and building the main client site out to out perform the amazon-like site. Still, following the steps above will help you plan a good solid strategy going forward and will help support the sites performance, user experience to ultimately improve sales conversions and revenue Cheers!

Are Landing Pages Not Connected to our Nav Bars considered Black Hat?
Hi LuaMarketing! Great question and we get asked this a lot from clients/potential clients who have multi-locations. We are actually in the process of rolling out pages to target surrounding cities within a 15 min drive to try to rank for their less competitive markets. To break apart my response, let's approach this from PPC and SEO. For PPC efforts, creating landing pages is super effective for your user to get the info specifically what they were searching for, immediately (this stands true for SEO, but I'll get to that). PPC landing pages are generally less text heavy and more focused on CTA's, forms, phone numbers and the like, so having them not indexed in your meta data is helpful and recommended. As noted above, tons of companies large and small do this. For SEO efforts, always keep in mind not to over-optimize the page as well as making sure it is a part of some internal link so the spiders can find it, crawl it, index it for the SE to rank it. Your content needs to be 100% original, readable to the visitor (Google is basically becoming more and more like a human reader) and relevant to what the searcher entered to make that page display as a result. The other critical component will be to build links to those pages through ethical, non-spammy link building tactics. There are plenty of websites which do not have all of their inner pages listed in the main navigation, nav bar drop downs, footer section... rather, they are embedded appropriately within the inner pages body content or within blog article content. It is certainly doable, however, if you think what you are implementing may be spammy, you just may be right. Follow the best SEO guidelines and practices and keep asking great questions like this and you will get the community behind you to help you grow your sites. Hope this was helpful! Cheers - Patrick

Ecommerce: How does having fresh content affect rankings
Hey Bob, This might be an older post from 2011, but Cyrus does a great job getting to the root of what you are searching for. I don't want to rewrite his suggestions, but let's say I have this page bookmarked to reference whenever I need it Understanding Google's freshness factor and how it affects search rankings Oh, and read Justin's post on this as well! Great insight into the technical Google patents and breakdown.

My Recent Drop from the first page
1. For increasing Domain Authority, as mentioned in my other answer this is about gaining just a few really good quality links from highly trafficked and trusted sources. This can be done more proactively through maybe outreach or trying to get a story about you done somewhere, or land an interview etc. Or it can be done more passively through exceptional content, or an exceptional brand and you will gain links as a result. 2. Outbound links don't really carry weight in the sense of authority being given to your site the way an inbound link does. Having outbound links on your site may help to a small degree with perhaps your trustworthiness in Google's eyes though. 3. That is correct.

Staging site - Treated as duplicate?
Yes, it would show up in your analytics as an active user but the fact that the query returns no results means it's not been indexed. All good. Peter

Measuring the lead that come from Organic Search
Hi Joni I was also going to recommend setting up events/goals as Chris mentioned. The goal gets tracked as a metric, so you can view metrics for any traffic source. You would basically do it in one of two ways; either have an event trigger when the "submit" button on the form is clicked or use the "thank you" or "confirmation" landing page URL and set the event as a URL destination. Then, once you have an event, you can turn any event into a Goal. While it is true you can get this data for Organic Search traffic in one bucket, unfortunately due to "not provided" you won't be able to get accurate data by keyword. -Dan

What is the best way to deal with https?
Hi, It sounds as though you have done everything right. BUT - (this is a bug-bear of mine) Google doesn't display breadcrumb rich snippet info on https pages. Also, some directories won't link to https pages (not ever seen this as a major issue because it's usually the spammy directories that do this) Amelia
