I checked your site and see some really small problems here and there and i don’t really think this is any penalty or something... I think all you need is an in-depth on-page analysis and with time you might receive everything back at least in terms of rankings...

RE: Link Building
I do not have the website otherwise by looking at the trend I might have helped you better but the situation you told me is possible only when
- You competitor is very smart
- Your competitor is really dumb
I would build links to my social profile (Infect I have done that in the past) not because of the juice or link value or anything similar but i was more focused toward attract real and targeted users to my social media accounts from where I can build relationships that later can be used in multiple ways...and at the same time this activity opens more door for link opportunities.
I would love to build links for my Google+ profile as I am pretty much sure that author rank is going to help a lot in the future.
So, if your client have a long term strategy when it comes to social or inbound in general and have some really smart people doing SEO for them then he is using this activity to get more exposure in the targeted audience and he actually wants to invite people to calibrate and engage with him and his business through social media channels.
But what if he is dumb!
He might be thinking the same that Building links for a social media website like twitter and facebook and then adding a link of a website on social media profile give him more benefits as twitter and facebooks are authentic websites in the eye of Google.
If this is the thought... then this is not going to help achieving want he really want to achieve from this activity.

RE: How Would Google Approach Devaluing Infographic Links?
As far as I understand the concept of infographic is that it is a way to attract 100s of link pointing back to your website... how that actually happens... I guess this happens when someone copy and paste your infographic by using the embedded code!
Now if there is a paragraph on the page that is linking to the main site.. (Probably that will not be included in the embedded code).. So in that case you might not get much benefits of an infographic even after it go viral.
As far is discounting links in infographic is concern it is a simple chain that is easy to capture.
My words: I don’t think infographics links are discounting completely at least the moment and even if they do you have a fair chance to impress people from your infographic and convert them in to profitable business sales.

RE: Keywords based domains redirecting to a site.. is it SPAM?
Ryan, correct me if I am wrong but having one or few keyword based domains pointing out to main domain is fine but too many will a suspicious signal to Google... also the authority of main domain should also be put in consideration... no?

RE: Duplicate Content Vs No Content
If i strictly stay up to the question then i would go this way...
1. If the content is really awesome for for duplicate but always ad the canonical tag so that you do not die in the SE world.
2. If the content is just tons of words on the page to fill the container... its better to let the container go empty!

RE: How Does Google differentiate a keyword you are optimizing for and a non-keyword?
If I will be at your place I would have considered using 1 keyword per page. For instance “Business Consulting” is my primary keyword would try and use it on the home page and for recruiting services i would create a page based on this keyword and target that keyword from that page only instead on targeting all the keywords on the home page.

RE: Duplicate Content Vs No Content
I am not sure the idea will take you out of panda or penguin but my ideas will defiantly going to kill the duplicate content on pages that you are facing at the moment
Add UGC:
It’s difficult for people for businesses to add UGC on their website as many are not comfortable with it but if you are then I would suggest to add UGC on their website that include game reviews, page comments and more...
The Game Talk:
Similar to UGC but here they will be restricted to talk about game cheats, tricks, and tactics only...
The more transparent you can be the more ideas will come in to your mind that will help you get away from duplicate content issue but again I am not sure if this is going to take you out of panda or penguin.

RE: Would this drop indicate a manual penalty?
Ryan is pretty much right on his point... I spent 2mins on your link profile data and I can say that this more seems like a link penalty. The links pointing to you are mostly spammy and irrelevant.
I think its better to check your messages in Google Webmaster tool and see if you received any email from Google.
In other case there are two things you can do:
- Design a viral link campaign that allows natural links to come in, focus on the link quality and relevancy.
- Use Link Disavow tool by Google to discount shitty links that are available in your profile.
And this should help you increase your rankings within few weeks of time.
Hope this helps~

RE: Best Tool For Local Rank Tracking
I would suggest you to try RankWatch as they are more accurate and good at tracking locals!

RE: Should we consider redirecting a high ranking subdomain page to our homepage?
Ok, this is tricky one Brad!
There are situations that you should consider before you go ahead and start doing this, but before everything just go to your Google Analytics and see how much search traffic you are receiving to your design studio page and what keywords are they using to search your page.
If good %age of people who are landing from search are using your brand name then I think you can go with it but if they are using specific design studio related keywords, this action can really hurt their user experience.
In my opinion you can also test this idea by adding 302 redirect for few days instead of 301. If things works well for you then you can always change from 301 to 302 but if you see bounce rate is increasing or something you can always change by removing 302 and then the new page you have created, 301 it to the design studio page.
It’s difficult to say how people will react to it but testing the stuff (while being on the safe side) is a good idea.

RE: Does changing host server between countries affect SEO if there is no content change?
Only few things to keep in mind!
I always believe that location of the server have an impact on rankings... so if you are changing your server from US to Asia... I guess there will be a problem and you might see a fall in rankings (at least fluctuations).
Other thing that you should keep in mind is the down time. I would suggest checking the down time of the server and if it is more than usual the migration can be really risky!
If you are switching from one server to another within the same hosting company, this is an easy pick! All you have to do is to properly go with the migration process with minimum down time and I am sure things will be easy with you.
Hope this helps!

RE: Request: Feedback on new free tool that provides social analytics for recent blog posts
Adam, you asked for a feedback so I will try to be as honest as possible so that things that are missing can be added and over all it should be improved.
I would love to call it a blog tracking tool.. the only idea that immediately comes in my mind is to look in to the competitor and see what they are up to and what audience reaction they are getting against different post in the past few weeks and months... this can help one write what is significantly hot these days... but what about the following updates?
- You give the stats of facebook share, like, tweet, SU, reddit... which you can easily and quality find from other services like sharedcount.com. Dont you think it will be great if you can come up with a formula or something that calculate the total social power of a blog post...
- If you go a little deep in to the post and pick up keywords from it... you will be able to feature the top 5 powerful keywords that the blog you are looking for is targeting...this will be a feature that most people will like.
- How about getting a data from Majestic free API and feature the top 5 links they recently get against their posts. (This is a rough idea but it can be fine tuned to make it beneficial for targeted audience and off-course for you!)
If you can include more features to it... this really can get a pickup by people in the industry! I honestly don’t see any paid value for it but as a free tool this can go good!

RE: Off page SEO
I see you have planned to slowly poison your website in the longer run as many of the tactics are very low quality or give no positive value to the website.
If I will be at your place this will be the following plan I would have preferred. (Plan always get changed from industry to industry but I am considering this as a general plan)
- Research and gather the list of all the important and high quality directories that are relevant in your niche and get links for all (it won’t be more than 50 ~ 60).
- Find the blogs in your industry allow me to write a guest post on their blogs, shortlist the one that contain more social, traffic and DA and will target them for guest posting. 4 to 5 a month will be fine.
- 6 to 8 Posts on your own website blog (no micro sites) is great, keep the promotion plan on... writing a blog is not enough.
- 1 Slide share << go for it... no harm in it but remember it should have to have a value or else it’s like dumping your time in to waste bin.
- Manual Outreaching fir links.. This can be like link sleuthing, promoting any viral stuff that is available on your website or may be following the competitor’s links wisely.
- Press Release should not have a number... use this only when you think you have something new regarding your company that will attract users. Use it to entertain users and not get links...
I know the plan available here is not complete but still way better than the one you have! You plan give a strong feeling that it revolves around getting links (many tactics you have mentioned will offer your low quality links only.) and my plan is more towards users and targeted audience so that you get only high quality links naturally.
SEO has changed a lot not instead of building links you have to create scenarios and situations that attract links naturally.
Hope this helps!

RE: Increasing Search Queries
Nov 5th 2012 is the exact data of the 21st Google Panda rollout!
Are you a victim of it? May be, because the date is exactly the same data when Google rolled out hte update on Panda. Here is the like to it! http://www.seroundtable.com/google-panda-21-15918.html
I guess when you need to do is to figure out what quires are lost and what pages were ranking against it.. once done, start fixing the pages in terms of on-page and content and get more natural links to it and most probably things will go good with you again!

RE: Stumbleupon Paid Directory results
I have personally tried SU paid discovery and usually the traffic is produce towards the website is great in terms of number (don’t ask me about the bounce rate they produce). If you cannot track the traffic in analytics that you see in paid discovery in dashboard i would ask you to recheck your analytics...
May be analytics code is not present on all pages or something similar.

RE: Should we 301 redirect our old domain to the new domain
Ok, in a way you are saying you have two different website one is the old one and one is the new one… or both domains open up a single website? If both websites are different then I would advise you to play safe and do not redirect instantly because redirection can cause a dip in conversions…
In that case you should focus on building links for new domain and rank it on keywords where your old keywords are located and then redirect if you want…
If this is two domains open up one website only, then isn’t it redirect already?
Still a little confusing but I am trying to answer!
-
RE: Should we 301 redirect our old domain to the new domain
Now this is confusing again... you said your old domain is not ranking or any phrases....if this is the case then redirecting 301 to new domain is the option and you will not see any dip in traffic or conversions...
but if you are saying that your old domain is ranking then the strategy will be different.
-
RE: Should we 301 redirect our old domain to the new domain
Check the back link profile of your Old domain at step one if it is fine and no junk link is there in the link profile... then go ahead and redirect it 301 to the new URL... It’s always good to get link juice that you are wasting anyways...
But if there is a lot of junk in the link profile of the old URL i will consider dropping that and go for the new URL as a standalone property...
In both the cases your future link building and SEO efforts should be on the new domain.

RE: Blog on Subdomain vs. Subdirectory - Best Practices
Well there is a very old debate and many SEO will recommend you using sub directory instead of sub domain.
Reasons why you should use Sub directory instead of sub-domain:
- Search engine still counts sub domain as another website so if the blog is in sub directory it will be considered as the part of the website
- Your over all SEO efforts will impact on sub directory which is not the case in terms of sub domain.
- Its way easier to rank for long tail keywords with sub directory instead of sub domain.
If SEO is not a problem for you are you are more interested in branding then i think subdomain goes well as its easier to remember and write directly in the URL bar.

RE: Confirming Robots.txt code deep Directories
that's right!
Disallow: /root/this/ will bock the complete directly whereas,
Disallow: /root/this/that will only block the "that" within "this"
hope this helps!
