Would you guys mind help me brainstorm?

My client contact me and he wants to build a car classified kind of website for Utah. He wants to make the website from scratch, he has a pretty good budget and plan on using online marketing together with traditional marketing.

If you were building your own car classifieds sites and budget was not a problem what would you include in your site? (ex: responsive, native ios app, blog, free tool for tell the user the value their car, etc)

How would you do the online marketing?

Which car Classified site do you like? why?

You will have to do 301 redirect, Same thing as Moz did when they stop being Seomoz and became Moz.

The task will get more complex based on how much content you have.

The flow for a small site would be:

1 - Move all the content for the new platform:

2 - Make a spreadsheet with old url and new url.

3 - Create a 301 redirect.

301 do not guarantee you will keep 100% of your traffic, I noticed the most times the sites lost about 15-20% on traffic right after the 301.

Also I think that if you self host your WordPress you will have more freedom than if you just use WordPress.com

Roger, you are trying to hire above average developer and you are not finding, so you must be doing something wrong. Right?

We are trying to help you, giving you suggestions, we already told you to make the job description shorter removing "having an understanding of", we told you about the importance of the company culture to attract great developers, we told you to check the developer github and blog and many other things...

i do not understand why instead of try some of the suggestions out, you are trying to prove (sometimes even being mean with who tried help you) that all  suggestions are not valid and all that you are doing so far is already great and you dont need to improve anything.

Maybe all that you need to do to find the developer you need is to be a little bit more humble.

I agree with everything Daniel said. I would like to add that a brilliant developer knows that they are great and they know they can pick for who they work for, so when they see a job description like yours; 1 - Sounds super comic. 2 - They will run because sounds like you want to abuse them. (i am not saying you want I am just telling you what a developer will think).

If You want find an amazing developer you need to find a developer that;1 - Blog about his stuff, 2 Have an active github account with great projects, 3 - It's involve with open source.

When you find this developer you have to understand that money is "out of table" for them. They are already making very good money.  Enough to them not worry about money anymore that's why when they leave their work they keep "working" for "free" in open source projects because coding is what they love....    You have to offer them more than high salary, they want a great work environment, they want to feel they will be building something that will "change the world"... they DO NOT want to be micro manage and yes they expect to be very well paid too.

1 - You can Improve the site load time using tools like http://gtmetrix.com (page speed is also a ranking factor)

2 - I noticed you are using Magento you can install a magento extension to fix a few magento SEO Issues and give you a few extra features. I recommend http://mirasvit.com/magento-extensions/advanced-seo-suite.html

About the shopping cart I would chose the one your developer have more experience. If you are the developer and you dont have experience with any shopping cart pick the one you find better documentation and active community. So you can ask questions when you dont find in the documentation.

I am sure that any option out there won't have everything you need done and will require customization.

I personally got everything in your requirements done using Magento.

How many products does your store have?

Magento have an option call "URL Rewrite Management" (Catalog > URL Rewrite Management)

If you have a few products you can change the URLs manually to match OsCommerce.

If you have  a lot products you should:

1 - Export SKU and URL from OsCommerce to CSV. (ask a PHP developer to make script for you)

2 - Import the spreadsheet to magento  with the columns named: SKU and  url_key

If your site is really big you will need a third part magento extension to import the categories. Magento do not have any native function to import categories.
