Adwords ban
yes, barry. i want to cease all activity from previous accounts and start fresh. i want everything to be done above board unlike before when his last ppc guy just created a new account after the first was banned. i just want to get him set up clean and not have to worry about a future ban as long as i am creating ads according to gg's best practices.

Empty <a>tag (no href or name attribute specificed) potential effect on link juice</a>
I've been thinking about this one too. And my inital reaction is that it doesn't count. Another thread at Google backs me up, http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Webmasters/thread?tid=7778313784ba6db5&hl=en I'd go with that it doesn't, not unless the href is present.

Paid Comparison Shopping Engines
Shopping comparison(SC) sites work of a product data feed which is specific to every site. So you've got two options 1. Create a data feed for every SC site you want to use or 2. Use a third party such as www.godatafeed.com who will take one feed from you and create the multiple specific feeds Some SC sites have implemented a bidding system others use a fixed cost per click. If you go for the first option you can use Analytics software to optimise your feed (optimise titles/descriptions to increase CTR, remove items which have high Cost/Conversion). If you go for the second option, they will most likely optimise feeds for you.

Why is site not being indexed by Google, and not showing on a crawl test??
Site last cached 2nd March Your site is indexed. Header's returning 200 codes. Site can be crawled fine, Xenu finds about 27 pages. Lynxviewer gets through the page alright. Only thing I can think of is that robots.txt looks needlessly complicated but should be alright, I would consider stripping it all out and re-running the test, if you get the same error then it's not that, if it is then narrow down what it could be. If no joy, let me know and I'll have another look.

Link building strategy - black hat or white hat?
We've seen a great potential here with some of our projects' competitors and are also thinking that there's a point to go for this strategy ... as long as you're not promoting one site that then links to your main site, but use your satellite sites to promote the main site, I believe there's a good potential.

Are there *truly* any white-hat link-building tactics?
I have to disagree with your .gov comment. I've seen a lot of.gov/.edu with autoapprove comments and the amount of OBL's on page is ridiculous. Sending an obvious signal to google because a large majority of the pages are so spammy. However if you can get a link from a .gov with moderated comments.. fair play.

New website branding, differences between http://www and http://
Given that we know there isn't any difference from an SEO perspective it comes down to purely external factors. Some questions to think about... Are people going to constantly link to the www version any way? In a competitive space is one more eye-catching than the other? What's more memorable to the visitor?

Page Titles in Uppercase - an SEO trick or simply a form of web vanity?
If you need to scream with that page title you should use caps if not lower case is the way to go as like all the Mozzers above are saying there is no seo advantage.

Very basic hands-on type of question about SEO
No point in irrelevant linking. There's no harm in going back and adding links once you have relevant content to link to, sometimes you even change where links are pointing, but I wouldn't aim to have X amount of links in each article. For my own sites the more powerful the page the more likely I am to put extra links in but as a rule I try not to have more than 3 links in the body of an article. But, simply linking when it seems useful is a good rule of thumb.

What is your favorite alternative search engine?
I do quite a few searches on twitter; unfortunately usually there is even more "noise" then even Google shows.

Would it be bad to change the canonical URL to the most recent page that has duplicate content, or should we just 301 redirect to the new page?
You're right. As I was writing my response I realized this is not a good way to go about it. There's really no reason to keep these duplicate content pages. We are pulling content from our database of clients and some of them had been entered more than once in our system, so they created duplicate pages of content and we were thinking we would want the latest version of the client's content which would also contain the active order in our system to be the "main page" but we really just need to remove the older ones instead. Thanks so much for your help, and I am sorry for the confusion!

Do you think video syndication is a good link building tactic?
I'm not convinced syndication via other players is the best link building tactic because if anybody links to or embeds them they're linking to the host site and not your site. If the aim is to let people see and talk about the content (as in, if they're likely to do a blog post or otherwise talk about your site with a link when using these videos) then it's not bad, but there will almost definitely be some leakage. So, definitely do it for exposure, especially if you think it's the only way people will see your videos in the first place. Not the worst thing in the world if you're selling something or it's the type of content people blog about. However, if you can host your own player (or something like Brightcove) and have a link back in the player then that's going to be better in terms of link acquisition.
