What's the best strategy for checking international rankings?
Hi Jason, I use the GeoSurf toolbar to get connected with proxies all over the world. They have 90+ geolocations available. Whenever I want to check my rankings in e.g. Germany, I just click on the German flag and then go to google.de. Now I get real German search results for my keywords. http://www.geosurf.com/ I think you still get a 5 day trial when signing up.

Different country, same language
Once you do this its worth looking into Google's new HREFLANG tag which they announced in December 2011. Its worth reading this example as John Doherty has done some testing (even though I can't see it in his source code). You'll still want a non county specific domain such as .com as Mozo suggested. I'll be implementing HREFLANG into my sites this year, it'll be interesting to see the results.

Title, description modification?
No, Google will not penalize you but then those changes will appear only afer Google crawls and indexes the page. In case Google finds your title & meta data of low quality, it can fetch it from Yahoo! directory or DMOZ (if you have your entry). In case you don't have it, it will use the first lines or the most related content on your page.

Targeting combination of keywords
I would agree with both Andy and Shailendra. Keep your pages focussed and where possible, have pages with a dedicated purpose. Create pages in a structured manner and as already mentioned, try and get a phrase into the URL, the page title, H1, etc., but ensure that your links can be followed easily by your visitors as well as the search engines. Embed a few links with strong anchor text into the page content where possible as well. Good luck, Andy

WordPress does it automatically if you've got your permalinks set up. WordPress .htaccess should look like this: BEGIN WordPress <ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteRule ^index.php$ - [L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule . /index.php [L]</ifmodule> END WordPress And it should be .php not .html anyway in WP Is WMT finding links to .html pages from pages on your site or from external links?
