As mentioned in the other responses go for the targeted keyphrase in the Title Tag if you haven't got enough room to append the company name. I have come across individuals or organisations that have been adamant that they want it in for "branding" reasons.I just show them the analytics report of more people searching for the service than the brand or if its not an existing site the Google estimated local search volumes. Usually the figures will win out over any potential vanity.

That is certainly possible, and it's a smart thing to do in many cases. The easiest example of this that I could think of was the terms "buy mens nike shoes" and "buy womens nike shoes". store.nike.com ranks highly for both results, but with an almost completely different set of pages for each. Many large brands will have several similar items that are differentiated by the long tail, so you should be able to find more examples fairly easily.

Thanks a lot for the valuable advice - looks as though the risk reward ratio does not stack up in my favor just yet. I'm definitely going to hold fire until the Panda update has stabilized even though I am sure I would be benefiting the users.........

Hi! I'm following up on some older questions. What did you do in this case? One thing I would have added to this discussion is that if you owned the domain already to verify it in Google Webmaster Tools and see if there were any webmaster notifications there about the domain.

I think this was more due to the bad link profile you created, not the PR numbers per se.

Stavros, PageRank can indeed hint at site's strength - many authoritative sites exhibit very high PageRank values and going up against them may be silly in some cases. However it's a workable situation... If you see a site with PageRank 10 in the results yet their site lacks the phrase you're targeting in essential places such as title tag, content and inbound links (as part of anchor text) it may in fact be possible to beat them. Basically relevance will beat authority. That's why Microsoft doesn't rank well for "Men's Shoes" despite their high PR. Also PageRank is a raw importance value assigned to each individual page not to a phrase or other factors and is transmitted through links. One page gives other page it's PageRank by linking to it. Hi, Working in SEO I always cringe when a designer mentions Flash. However my phobia of Flash is old school and maybe I need to get with the times. Google will crawl textual content in Flash, including anchor texts. It will also follow links in Flash and presumably applies the same 'link juice' factors that it would normally apply to links. Well, I have to say that I am surprised by that video, although not quite what I was thinking. I was probably more thinking of changing internal structure to push the more important parts of the site along better.

The website is not severely penalized as it still ranks for its domain name - http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&biw=1239&bih=869&q=discoverhookah&aq=f&aqi=g-s1g-v1g-sv4&aql=&oq= It wouldn't do that, if it had a filter penalty or was deindexed. The home page doesn't have any text on it besides text link. The sub pages are super poorly optimized. So no, I don't think it has a penalty. It just needs some SEO love.
