Videos on Home Page
We're attempting to shorten the content and length of the home page, remove some gifs/images. I am hoping that we wouldn't keep many videos, but the team wants to add/keep them. I am hoping to see great results just from the removal of all the crap, but I want them to know that the more videos on the homepage, the longer it will take to load all of those videos. Google Page Speed Insights has us already at the 40s/100 for desktop and mobile. We've compressed images, removed/replaced svg images, compressed gifs, and were still hovering around that page speed. Google Developer Tools from Google Chrome shows us at almost 40 second total load time. We're working on our backlinks and really are not that bad as far as our profile is concerned. I am just hoping that if we fix this home page speed issue, the rankings will follow suite. I was unsure if the actions/automations around the videos could be a problem. I don't know if there is or isn't javascript involved. Sorry, not the most tech savvy, but also not the worst. Our videos are either placed in carousel or under an icon/button that shows a video preview as an image when you hover over the icon. Not sure if that is or is not java. Our videos are hosted on vinmeo and are embedded in the page. I plan on explaining to them that if we want to try to rank for one of these videos then they probably would need their own page or to be placed on a very relevant page. Other than that, is there anything else I can go with? Too many videos considered a poor practice in preparation for the mobile index? If I am wrong or overreacting, then I'll let them put up their videos, but if people have seen results where to many videos hurt the mobile experience or page load time, please let me know. Thanks again!

Accurate Rank Checking for Local SEO
Hi Ben - Chad here from Moz. Kudos to Joy and Nigel for the great tool suggestions. I checked those out myself! You make a good call out that there is no perfect method for tracking rankings given proximity and geographic location - I'd also add personalization as the other big factor. I was recently in the same room with 4-5 members of my client's digital team in Texas. We all ran the same keyword search on laptops and mobiles, and nearly all saw variations in the local results. So, there's that. : ) Moz has put a ton of thought and testing into how to get the most directionally accurate results, but personalization in particular challenges any method. It may go without saying, but I tell my clients to pick one method or tracker (maybe two at the most) then look at the directional changes in rankings vs. the absolute rankings themselves. It takes the pressure off small changes in rankings and allows them to become a useful confirmation that all is well or an alerting system that something has gone/is going in the wrong direction. This is in contrast to metrics like traffic (online and off), GMB insights data, and conversions/sales that tend be better indicators of success in your digital efforts. Best of luck! -Chad

How do I know if I am correctly solving an uppercase url issue that may be affecting Googlebot?
Not that I've noticed... I started with the company back in February and noticed it when I crawled the site with Screaming Frog. So they already had uppercase and lowercase permalinks back then. When I brought it to our developers attention they didn't seem to concerned. Then I saw something somewhere that discussed Google seeing them as potential duplicates. Which is when I posted to MOZ and got the response that it was fine since we have canonical URLs in place. So, it has not had any negative effect since I started that I can see. However, I don't know how to correct Screaming Frog from seeing as duplicate pages.

I have been running a website camping.uk-directory.com which has tanking in SERPS over last two years.
I know you probably did - but did you replace the domain with yours? RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off RewriteRule ^(.)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^camping.uk-directory.co.uk [NC] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^$ RewriteRule ^(.) https://camping.uk-directory.co/.uk/$1 [L,R,NE] Also ask your hosts to update your server and httpconf files at a server level too to make sure it is configured correctly.

Too many "nofollow" outgoing links are Okay?
Well having too much spammy content is a really difficult battle to fight. Google will eventually tackle the bad, the spammy, the duplicate and the keywords stuffed content out of their rankings. As your website is a forum, i'd advise to make more strict rules to the community and sanction the spammy content. Also educate the community in order to do not violate content google guidelines. Hope it helps. Best luck. GR.

Sub domains take away the pagerank/link juice of main website?
Hi, My main domain and sub domain are treated as separate entities in terms of link equity and DA. BUT, my sub domain is a blog compared to my root domain being a much more concise service industry site. So they are pretty different in most ways. How closely related in terms of content is your sub domain compared to your root domain? Since my blog attracts more links because of its article and restraint-free content, I try to funnel some of that link equity to applicable pages on my root domain, how well it works I am still uncertain of. -Ben

Why are NONE of my keywords fluctuating in ranking?
Hi there! Thanks so much for the question! I took a look at your campaign which is currently tracking 77 keywords and I see there has been some fluctuation in the rankings- I'm wondering if I'm looking at the correct campaign? Would you mind sending a quick email over to help@moz.com with the campaign name you're working with? That way we can take a look and do some digging to see what's going on. Looking forward to hearing back!

How can a site rank high without any visible SEO tactics?
Hi Don, Thanks for your reply! I've used CognitiveSEO for the linkprofile and I did saw some backlinks. I haven't mistaken Organic rankings with Paid traffic. I will take a look at their linkprofile according to Semrush. Funny thing is: a big part of the 58 links are redirects from their old domain. Thanks again for your help! Best, Stefan

500 - server error
You'll need to inspect the site's server logs to begin narrowing this down, Jens. Causes can range from traffic overload (like from bots, which won't show in your Analytics) to database problems, plugin conflicts etc.

How can I make sure a desktoppage is shown in the (desktop) search results instead of the mobile page?
Hi Willie, Is your homepage showing up for other keywords? Are you sure it's been indexed? Make sure you haven't accidentally blocked the homepage from crawlers. Even if it is in the index already, now that you've made these updates to the homepage you may want to resubmit it to the index in Google Search Console using the Fetch and Render tool. Also remember that these things can take a little time to update.

Can you edit the crawl depth on an existing Campaign?
Hi there! Jo from the Moz support team here. It sounds like you're wanting to stop rogerbot from crawling certain pages on your site. The best way to do this is to exclude rogerbot using your robots.txt file. You can read more about how to do that here https://moz.com/help/guides/moz-procedures/what-is-rogerbot If that's not possible for whatever reason, then I would recommend using the "Ignore" feature in Moz Pro Site Crawl, that way we won't keep reporting these issues. If there is anything else I can help you with please do let me know. Cheers! Jo

How to see who shared my link on twitter
You could always trial a service like mention.com - It will allow you to track specific content across a variety of locations including FB and Twitter etc. It is a paid solution, but you can get a free trial. So people share a specific link or bit link - hopefully you can track it.
