Hi Stu, as the root domain and sub-domain are targeting different geo-locations, moreoever Google treats the sub-domains a little more like a stand alone website, it is highly recommended to earn links for both of them individually, by all possible means from their respective geographies, I mean from the web properties operating or targeting audience in those geo-locations. For example, it would be odd for me to earn links for a Japanese website, targeting Japanese audience from web properties operating or targeting USA audience. Though this is not uncommon, it will not serve the purpose. Over and above this, fetching quality back links from any where is always recommended especially if those links are from authority web properties with high DA, PA and other SEO goodies like good Google PageRank etc.. I would conclude by addressing your question that fetching links to the root domain will not help much to make the sub-domain rank high in search results for many obvious reasons. Just like  we do deep link promotions for promoting pages other than the home page so that they can rank high for their respective target terms, we should be promoting the sub-domains also as if they were standalone websites so as to get maximum benefit from an off-page promotional campaign. Hello KTW..., I would not make these two pages have the same rel canonical tag, as they are not the same page, nor the same product: http://wagavenue.com/what-happens-in-the-dog-park-pet-id-tag-for-dogs http://wagavenue.com/very-important-pooch-custom-pet-id-tag-for-dogs Yes, they are the same "shape" and made out of the same material, but that would be like an eCommerce site for clothes that was being told they should add a rel canonical tag for all of their cotton T-shirts to combine them on one product page for "cotton T-shirts". That's not a product page. That's a category page. You can have some shared content on product pages about shipping, returns, etc... but if I were you I would invest in as much unique content as you can on each page. Talk about the sayings. The colors. The material. There are a million ways to say the same thing if you're creative. Failing that, you can put the shipping and returns information, and similar templated info, in an iframe or a javascript pop-up window, or some other way of keeping from being duplicate content on every page. Long story short, if you want to rank for 100 different sayings (e.g. "what happens in the dog park dog tag", "very important pooch dog tag") you need to write unique descriptions for each of those. There is no way around it without risking your traffic from Google.

Hi Letty I don't think there is anything wrong with it, but if you are already committed to using Google+ and including authorship on your site's pages which is linked to your Google+ profile, then I don't think you need it. I would use Google+ instead. I hope that helps, Peter

Hi, I suggest putting your site into the Open Site Explorer and looking at the Page Authority and Domain Authority of the links. These two metrics are Moz's measurement of authority which you can find out more about via the links here: http://moz.com/learn/seo/page-authority and http://moz.com/learn/seo/domain-authority. They will give you a good idea. Just a word on the Disavow tool. Be cautious in the way you use it and maybe check out this blog post: Disavowed: Secrets of Google's Most Mysterious Tool before you do anything further. I hope that helps, Peter  

Hi, Redirect and RedirectMatch are two ways you can implement redirects on Apache web server. The RedirectMatch directive allows pattern matching while the Redirect directive is for a single file. Thanks everyone. Helped clear my head a bit on how to use the tool. The reason I was concerned was that the 4,000+ links were coming from 9 domains. Tracked it down to one, another site they own.... Just had to leave the project for a day and come back to it to think more clearly on how to find which site all the links were coming from and then how to show them all the links (and why it might not be a good idea to do that).

Hello Lydia. First - I don't recommend it in general but it does work to a degree.  It used to work better. The idea is that if you link to a page dedicated to a subject and cram enough instances of that phrase onto the page (such as in a product list as in your example) that the page will rank for at least longtail versions of those queries. In the example you sent it likely does work to some degree but that's because they're a fairly strong site.  Nonetheless they probably saw their search volume decline as of late as it's pretty thin content.  Focus on this type of strategy and you're basically asking for trouble. If you stick to creating good content people want to link to and work hard to get people to find it and link to it in the first place (pretty necessary) you'll do far better overall.  If you want to rank for longtail phrases - build real pages on the subject.  Sure you can mention and link to products but provide some value for readers - not just a product list. And of course ... GOOD LUCK !

Hi, my guess is that it is a page extension that is unique to the Content Management System (CMS) you are using but it nothing more significant than that. Certainly it isn't helpful to anyone, human or search. I hope that helps, Peter

That sounds fine. I would choose either google apps or zoho for custom email. I have not heard of Hostasaurus up to this point. Hope this helps
