Duplicate content - big brand players
While the exact definition of "stronger" generally falls on pure authority and strength, it is skewing more to perceived user intent. What I mean by this is that if Google infers that the user is looking to purchase a product they would be more prone to rank Amazon however if they believe the user is simply looking for product information they would rank the Samsung site. I a lot of generic queries it's difficult for Google to determine, at least early in the search cycle where they may not have a pre-defined idea of what you're trying to do. In that case they would have to lean on pure strength. That said, as they're getting better and better at personalization of results, one could conclude (and I personally do) that if they see you searching phone models and generally clicking on online stores, that they would then infer that even on the next model-specific generic search, that you'd prefer a shopping experience delivered over the Samsung site and it's product based information.

Circular Canonical/Redirect
I've definitely seen ranking bumps due to fixing this sort of redirect-canonical paradox. XML Sitemap that is inconsistent just adds insult to injury. Your redirects, canonical tags, and XML sitemap should be completely consistent in terms of URL structure, protocol used (http vs https), etc. I highly suggest 'canonicalizing' all of these - agree on one protocol for whole site or for different sections of the site (http vs https), one sub-domain format (www vs non-www), and one method of accessing each piece of content (filter out unnecessary parameters, etc). I find that when you can really consolidate and get rid of diluted dupe-URLs ("index bloat") than you can reach your full potential in terms of rankings. But in short - if URL A has a canonical tag that points to URL B which then redirects back to URL A - it can be extremely confusing to the search engines. Best case - they ignore your canonicals. Worst case - index bloat and serious confusion. Hope that helps!

The purpose of these Algo updates: To more harshly push eCommerce sites toward PPC and enable normal blogs/forums toward reclaiming organic search positions?
Content has been my primary method of attack for a long time. I have tried PPC and still do it occasionally. The problem with PPC is that the competition is fierce. So, I attack all possible keywords with substantive content - usually having more content than all of my competitors combined. That earns me great organic positions for a majority of the long tail keywords. I place ads on those content pages that divert traffic to my sales pages. After building up a site I get a significant part of my sales from traffic that landed on content pages. I know how many visitors enter through those pages, their conversion rates and the average value of a sale, plus my profit margin. That allows me to know the average value of an ad click. I then compete those ads with adsense using Google's DFP ad server and am glad to take payment for a visitor instead of sending them to my store - because I know that the potential profit is sometimes higher.

Switch Payment from Yearly to Monthly
Hi Margret! You can downgrade anytime after setting up an annual account, however, your card will not be refunded for the full amount and will be applied as a credit on the account. The 20% discount for annual subscriptions can only be applied if you stay the full year. Downgrading will add the difference in the credit amount. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any questions!

Cloaking?
I agree with the others about using a description tag properly to avoid your donations showing up in the Meta Description for the page. If you want to post a link to the site, I'd be happy to take a look at the page and see if there's a quick fix / work around for you... Thanks, Jeff

Small help with title tags
Just to voice in - I agree with what's being said. You can't target them all and the title would read horribly. Even if you got rankings, your clickthroughs wouldn't be what they should be. I like the one Todd came up with.

Video in article + Video section = Duplicate content?
re="canonical" - or noindex the video section, dependent on how similar the pages are. If they're different enough, a "noindex, follow" tag will be more appropriate.

Internal Linking from Menu or body text or both with exact match keyword?
Wow thanks there is some great advice here - I agree I need to be developing my website for the user but there are many of my competitors who are still employing the tactic of many links on each page to Magican + Location and seem to be outranking me. I keep getting told by various SEO people that google will slap them down soon but it never seems to happen. I am still trying to find the magic formula as I suppose everyone is! Thanks Roger
