  • Yes, a citation is mention of your business on the web. It's usually accompanied by all of your NAP data. The more citations you have (with consistant information) the more Google can trust you with a good ranking. (Because it is an indication that the company which is listed is indeed doing what they say they do and they are located at the place where they say they do.)

  • Adam, keep in mind that if that's low quality content... and you redirect those URLs to somewhere else, then you're passing any links and any potential quality factors over to the new URLs. When Google Panda came out, keep in mind that one of the only ways to recover is to delete the low quality content from your site entirely. So why would you want to redirect that low quality content and pass that on to another URL or another site? I agree with what the others here have said, Casey and Wesley. Think of the user experience.

  • Going responsive is the way to go if you ask me and most other SEO's out there. I'm not sure i fully understand your question though. Responsive design doesn't have any issues with Javascript in most cases. It would depend a lot on what the Javascript would try to do. As Andy has stated above Google can now read and execute AJAX and Javascript which is great. The only thing you should be careful is when implementing more Javascript is whether the website will still function as expected on devices/browsers that don't (fully) support Javascript. There are simple fallbacks and such so that all of your users get served great content and not just the ones with the most modern devices and browsers. Excellent book for more information on this is: Designing with Progressive Enhancement. Must read for any front-end web developer if you ask me.

  • You may find someone else who is happy to provide additional advice on how else this can be handled Francesco, but it is a little outside my comfort zone as it borders on grey-hat and I would hate to be responsible to causing you problems. I'll drop you a quick PM over with something that may help with the re-writing though. -Andy

  • HI, Magento can have a bit of a steep learning curve so unless you want the developer learning on the job I would say you will want to see either a solid portfolio of sites already developed in Magento and/or Magento certification. There are quite a few individual Magento certified developers out there now, so it is worth looking to see if there are some in your area.

  • All is fine then. Category pages are very often noindexed to reduce duplication issues, so really don't worry about this. It certainly doesn't sound like there are any penalties going on there. That said, do a little social activity around your post as well and get it promoted. -Andy

  • I suspected that hence the original question. About greeting everyone... not a possibility for me at this time (maybe a weekly welcome with no name dropping). Thanks

  • Right... and I bet that they would be really embarrassed to say who is "liking them".... or maybe they would spin the explanation into some real BS.

  • Hi Karina, It is unlikely that you are being penalised for having a hyphenated domain, but Google do say that hyphens, especially on a dot com, are something of a spam signal, so tend to be flagged, but that doesn't automatically mean it is going to happen, or has happened. Moving forwards has a lot to do with your business objectives; do you want to build your company brand? What is the scope for moving forwards with the current domains in relation to this? Unless you want to re-brand, I would suggest looking at the site first to see if there are any glaring errors, but I suspect it will be a lack of link / content / social activity that is starting to hold you back now. There is also part of the Google algorithm that looks at exact match domains, but this shouldn't be a worry as long as the content matches the intent of the domain. Have you done much in terms of link building to the site, and do you have authorship set up? There may even be opportunities to include some Schema / Micro Data to help enhance the site, but that depends more on the site and content. Happy to answer any further questions. Andy

  • Maybe your competitor is using dynamic ad titles and not targeting your brand. Try entering "ABC plumbing" in Google and if title starts with "ABC plumbing" then you know they use dynamic ads. Why dont you create ads for your brands and you will quickly be nr 1 on PPC section and also quickly see price drops and pay very little per click (at least most likely). Let us assume they were targeting your brand: it is unlikely their conversion will be any good since users are looking for your brand.
