I just went through the top 150 keywords that brought people to our site to before we switched to our new structure to see if I could find a pattern and it is all random. My first thought was that something was moved farther down the subcategory list but there was no correlation. Many of these pages have almost none or no links. We have links coming to the site but not every category page. We have some category pages with zero external links rank #1 for our keyword. The text is unique. They are category pages so there will be some similarities, but the content and items listed are different.

If you can keep it under 15 words, i'd stick with 1 alt text for all instances - throwback MC video. So in your case, "Old Navy commercial display, faux white brick panel accent wall" would be acceptable. I think it would strengthen the keyword relevancy for the image rather than using different alt text on different pages. This gives me an idea for a test though... time to throw up a web page

Hi Oleg, Thanks for the informative reply. Yes, if we can do a 301 redirect, we will - but what if we cannot? Do I need to properly optimize for recent updates the old category URLs since they will be crawled? Do I have to worry about duplicate content between old and new? What is the best approach if a 302 is all that we have?

Moz doesn't have this, but there are a number of tools you can use for this purpose. Xenu Link Sleuth and Screaming Frog both will help you in this process.

Especially on Google+ you often see that people write a short enticing description which encourages people to read the post in the description. This is something you could do. A summary of the story however makes people not want to read the full story since they already read all the information in the summary.

Hi James SoleGraphics gave a great recommendation so setup custom reports which will send weekly emails of your data in PDF format. For crawl diagnostics you can add the UI module to your report as well but I recommend downloading the .csv file to have a copy of the full diagnostics report. Thank you all.  301 is definitely the plan.  As Andy pointed out - to "predict" how Google will react to the change even with a comprehensive 301 effort is a miss and hit exercise.

Ahh I see Steve. So there is a partial penalty to the site? If this is not the culprit, I would search out those that are. Detoxing is certainly an eye opener and you will most definitely find work to do with that. Andy

I think you can create a "separate experience" on your domain, while still keeping some elements of your brand in tact. Look at a landing page like Moz's for Mozcon for example. The site header and the color scheme are the same, but the layout and design of the rest of the piece are nothing like the traditional Moz blog post, tools or guide. It's totally OK to create a unique experience on your website for a dedicated landing page centered around an event, contest, etc.
