  • thx, Wesley. I have "noindex" on and actually it was more like 3 weeks ago since it was changed. I will observe a couple of more weeks and observe. Page 2 does not have more relevant content. So that one is a bit odd. Will observe as well

  • Hey Ignacio, It looks like you were able to get a campaign created with out the www, but I did some investigating to make sure there wasn't an issue with www.veinguys.com. I also received the invalid URL error the first time I attempted to create a campaign for the site, but the second time just a minute later, I was able to create a campaign for www.veinguys.com with no error. It seems the site may be having intermittent issues with response time. I would recommend contacting the webmaster and looking into the server logs to see what may be causing a long response time for the site. I hope this information helps. Please let me know if you need any further assistance. Chiaryn

  • Hi Mike, Thanks so much for clarifying the business model! So, the client is an SAB, and, yes, developing geo landing pages would be the right way to go. Typically, such landing pages are built around city terms. I believe what I'd do in this case is build one landing page per town/city and then encourage the client to continue on with narrowing down this subject by blogging about their projects in neighborhoods like Riverwest and Oak Creek. The main thing, of course, is to be sure you've got something unique and important to say on each landing page you build or blog post you write. Covering completed projects in the various cities is a good way to go with this. But as for a tool that's going to reveal what you want to know regarding whether people are using neighborhood names to search for services, I'm afraid I just don't know of anything reliable. Between 'keyword not provided' and the loss of the old Google Adwords Keyword Tool, it does seem to me that one has to rely mainly on common sense these days. No tools were ever very good at providing geo data, because the data centers were seldom local, but with the recent changes in what's available, I think the situation has gotten even tougher. I think you are right about trying different things and seeing what works, once you've built the core landing pages for the major service cities.

  • By the way, if your site has ANY visibility at all, you can expect an automated attack on the WP admin login maybe once an hour.  All day, every day.  So, if you leave your admin account active, and give it a password that's in the dictionary, you'll be seeing injection scripts in your home page and you'll be the proud assistant distributor of various pharma products within a month or two :-). Right now, I'm seeing so many scripted attacks from China, I blocked all China IP addresses from my travel website.  I was seeing hundreds to thousands of attempts per day before that.

  • I agree with Keri...there are a ton of factors that all contribute to ranking for any given term.  It's possible to rank well based simply on a few of them, if it's not super-competitive space.

  • Hi David, It sounds like you have had a partial recovery and looking at your other replies below, that the manual action you have applies to the links themselves which means Google have reduced their value and your rankings accordingly. So whilst they may not be actively hurting you, it is always good to have a clean slate and remove manual penalties if you can so that you know there is nothing holding you back from ranking. In terms of your actual question, if you have links that are clearly outside of Google guidelines, you may as well get rid of them if you can. They're probably not helping and if you are able to get rid of them, then it may help prevent any future problems if Google tweak how they treat those links. It sounds like you have recovered a little though with your ranking returning, so removing other links may not be a high priority for you, but like I said, it's good to get a clean slate and be sure that you can move forward building good links with nothing else holding you back. I hope that helps a bit! Paddy

  • All redirects lose link juice, Gregory is correct in what he says, but you would lose a bit of link juice in the redirect, better to use the anchor, it is ignored

  • Ah - okay, I'll see if I can do that. I'm not sure if I can though because of the way the ecommerce platform is setup. Yes, the sitemap has been corrected and has all non-https URLs in there. I mean, will google eventually "catch up" or is this a big issue that I should try everything in my power to fix? (It's not all links coming in via organic - just a handful but it's important as those are great leads). Thanks for your help!

  • I agree with Andy. When thinking of the right strategy for page/content development that all target the same general terms, Google is moving toward thematic indexing, versus keyword by keyword.  As long as the collection of target terms on the page is pretty close (just like your example list), the page should rank well for all target terms (and probably some other ones you have not intentionally targeted). For your meta data, you could introduce a Title that incorporates all keywords such as "The Best New York Restaurants" and a description such as "The best restaurants in New York as voted by local residents.  See if your favorite New York restaurant is on the list.  Read reviews, submit your vote and more!" Then use each of your various terms 1-2 times at the most throughout the content.  Use your most valuable term in the first 50 words on the page.  Make sure the content is written for humans and not spiders.  the bots are getting very good at detecting this, so just as Andy said, the user experience should be your focus, not rank. Also, don't forget to add images and alt text that incorporates some of your keyword targets as well. Best of luck!

  • Shawn, you say that you are not entirely convinced that these sites offer any additional value. So, if you don't see that they're offering value then do you really think that the general public will see them as valuable? These pages may be ranking for different reasons, and not because of the "lack" of pogo sticking. In fact, they just might have an issue like that but might have enough links and trust on the domain itself to rank well. Pogo sticking is only one search engine ranking factor of many. From what I understand, Google doesn't take into account the DMCA take down requests when it comes to rankings. They determine the rankings and then at the "search query time" is when they DMCA info is used. So, the page still ranks-- it just doesn't show up when someone searches for it.
