  • Thank you Alsvik! Very interesting the idea to use AIDA model in the "Meta Description Tag"! We'll try it and we let you know if it works for our customers!

  • Without performing your own tests, there's no 100% best answer for each specific situation, market or site. And you'll find people even here in the Moz community who prefer remaining in the same browser window and just as many who don't. So... all I can offer is my own experience in UX work - I've found users have an expectation that when they're clicking on a link internal to a site that they remain within the same browser window, but that when they're clicking on any link out (to another web site or social site), that opens a new window. This is especially important however, when the destination they're going to off-site breaks browser native "back" buttons, where even if you want to go back to the site you came from, you can't.

  • We had exactly the same problem as this. We then quoted the client to rebuild from scratch - but the cost was inhibitive for them. The thing about these 3rd party platforms is that they get the client hooked onto them and they get comfortable just paying a nominal fee each month. This particular client would spend the money to re do the website from scratch. The problem with their systems is that you cannot do too much customization of the pages in terms of the SEO attributes or change the page names etc, I am certainly not endorsing or recommending this company - but we have had more success with www.ebizautos.com  in terms of the issues I have just mentioned. With their system you can change the page names etc and have the ability to create numerous pages with their own custom URLs that then can  be as optimized as you want. URLs are ertainly better than the Dealer Specialties ones. Not as good as building your own system - but the results we have had from optimizing some of these ebiz ones have been better than using some of the other systems out there.  IT also helps if you have a client with serious budget constraints. Downside:   Still cannot get FTP access or them to even upload an XML file for GWMT. Might be worth a go.  Hope this helps. Carlos

  • One word - GIVEAWAYS. I am running a special right now and one of the rules of entry are: Newsletter sign up upon other data driven needs. The giveaway has to be GREAT and trust me - works like a charm. I am running a giveaway for 2 tickets to a NBA Playoff game. Pro - We are already up to 900+ subscribers for the start of May. Con - Not EVERYONE is interested in the products and or offer.

  • Hi Daniel, We eventually went with: With rave reviews and 20 year warranty, Swiss-made Bamix blenders are the very best. Buy today and enjoy personal service, free shipping and money back guarantee! This way it illustrates why you should choose that product and why you should shop with us, plus a call to action in the sense of "Buy now..." Thanks

  • Diane, I suggest you work on the content and make it more readable. The first paragraph is likely to turn off some readers and make them leave the site without clicking on any more articles or any ads. Take a step back and read the following out loud and see if it's something you think will encourage a reader to stick around. Payday Loans company Wonga who have been at the centre of a lot of controversy since they launched their pay day loans company are now expanding their business to target the small business owner where they are going to target small businesses who are struggling and offer them instant cash. Also, that article just doesn't seem to fit in. When I look at the header of your site, I see LIFESTYLE in all caps and a picture of a woman. Subheads are about health for men and women, gastric band hypnotherapy, gossip, holiday reviews, etc. One of the articles on your sidebar appears in numerous places on the web (duplicate content). You need content that people will want to read long enough for them to even notice the ads. If the content turns people off, they're going to close that browser tab, and all the positioning in the world won't make a difference.

  • the main priority of the site is user experience and the advertising comes second. i am not experienced in advertising and this is why i am asking for advice as i am not sure how to layout the page or where to put adverts for google adsense. can you explain more about the right side bar and why it would add value to the user experience please. could you also show me an example of a good page layout for adsense adverts so i can get this right please.

  • Thanks Tom, Yep, WA 2.0 is obviously very popular, my only slight concern was it's still pretty pricey and 3 years old now. I know the basics still hold true but had heard from a few people that it was quite heavy on how to's/step by steps, and I know Analytics has evolved a great deal in those 3 years. Any thoughts on how dated or not it is? Thanks for the quick response.

  • Breadcrumbs are usually integrated in the site template. You can also add links in product descriptions when relevant. But you might want to A/B test it, to make sure it doesn't hurt your conversion rate. If you use Wordpress, you can use this breadcrumb plugin by Yoast: http://yoast.com/wordpress/breadcrumbs/

  • Nice clean design, but not always to-the-point Use a pay-off at the header of the page (what can I find at this page) Change the elements "his week's featured footstools" and the black-and-white ilustrations (just show your product!!) Change the colour of your "Add to basket'" button and make the button more prominent Delete the red-white socks on a product detail page (and other pages exept the homepage). It's nice to use it at the homepage as a gimmick, but on every page it may be iritating. Your products are beautifull, show them!! Not the socks! Redesign your product detail pages: let the product be the most important part of the page not a big purple header, not the navigation on the left. Relocate 'free delivery" etc to a place above the fold. Remove the category navigation at your shopping basket page, just show the basket and the service claims like free delivery. Change the colour of your "checkout" button and simplify the form, just visit large webshops for examples. Good Luck!

  • Here's my two cents. I run two web sites offering the same service, one in the UK and one in Italy. One of the qualities most people remember me by from what I heard (and what I've been told) is my sense of humour. Last year I decided to incorporate this in my two sites and the results could NOT have been more contradictory. The UK market seemed to respond better to my naming the services and membership statuses in a humorous manner than their italian counterparts. I actually lost two Italian clients because they took offence to having their membership status as 'Principianti' which in essence means newbies. I want to add that there was no rudeness in the humour employed by either site, I simply did away with any formality. Result: Perhaps some A/B testing would have been clever in hindsight but ultimately what I lost with this experiment I more than made up for in clients with a sense of humour!

  • I run a custom report in GA that looks at landing page by keyword and try to make some sense out of that.  Do you have any better custom GA Reports?  As far as your other points, they are all very valid and we've been considering them.  I am a proponent of gaining insight through the customer voice - as long as it is not viewed as being intrusive. Thanks in advance for your response.
