Shopify websites. I've been asked to do some SEO work for a client.
The most common thing we see with Shopify is that the categories are often a mess due to lack of planning and understanding. They call them collections, and it's the equivalent to doing tag/category cleanup on a WordPress site to help clear out low-value content. Another common complaint is that the blog forces you into a bit of annoying URL structure (ie. /blog/news but works well if the content is solid.

Ranking Drops
Hi Becky, Without really investigating this it's hard to find an exact reason as to why you're experiencing ranking drops. You're right to check for any recent algo updates, but if there was something large - the entire SEO and digital marketing community would be losing their minds now. If I were you, I'd take some time to analyse the pages that have experienced the ranking drops, looking into the following areas: Check for algorithm updates (which you've done) Run your site and URLs through Page Speed Insights and make sure that there are no serious errors highlighted. If there are, make sure you get them fixed ASAP. Check that Google can actually see those pages, making sure that there aren't any nofollow, noindex tags in place Log into your Google Search Console account and check for any crawl errors, indexing errors & sitemap faults etc Run a crawl of your site in a tool such as Screaming Frog and check for any 404's, 302's and any redirect loops that may need to be addressed Do a full backlink analysis to make sure that any links pointing to your site are relevant and not spammy. Any low quality links pointing to your site, whether you built them recently or years ago will be having a negative effect I noticed that the URLs on your site don't use a trailing slash at the end. However, when I manually add a trailing slash, both URLs are showing as '200 OK' meaning that these can be considered as two different pages, which can cause confusion to Googlebot. I'd recommended making sure that any URLs that include a trailing slash are automatically redirected to the version without one - implement that site wide. Also, should a user search a URL on your site with a capital letter in the URL - they are being directed to a '404 Error' page. Implement a site wide redirection to make sure that any URLs that include a capital letter are then redirected to the correct lowercase version. For example: http://www.yoursite.com/proDuct > http://www.yoursite.com/product I'm sure there are a few other areas that you can look into but hopefully that provides you with a good basis. Best of luck

Multi Step Form or Standard Form for Data Capture
This makes a lot of sense. So I will not make any assumptions about my visitors and will test so as to obtain objective feedback.

Better use Google Analytics? This is for Conversion Rate Optimization purposes
Hi Roman, Please could you explain briefly why those steps are important? Is search queries what they search on google and then come through to our page? If so, would linking some Keywords research be really useful here? Source of traffic is really important, how can I easily manage a large site where not all UTMs are set up? I also need to differentiate between paid and organic listings. What are your tips in doing this? Your help is greatly appreciated!

How highly do you value a link from the BBB?
Not to bring this topic back up, but is this still valued? I understand the perception point of view, in that a lot of people still trust the BBB as a company that highlights good businesses to work with. BUT, as the links are now no followed, and the price for the accredited profile is very high, is it worth it? I can see it being so for a contractor, but for an agency?

Photos or Video Best for Landing Pages?
Something to consider regarding how you're measuring the traffic to the page... Do you have tracking of actual interaction with the video in place? (e.g. Play click, length of video viewed, where they stop?) I ask because we need to remember - Google Analytics by default counts a bounce visit as zero seconds, regardless of how long the visitor actually stayed on the page. This is especially important for landing pages. And what is the call to action on the page? Unless the CTA entails a second interactive hit to Google Analytics (like a second pageview), even successful page visits will be tracked as zero-second bounces. All this is to mean - the time on page being so low doesn't necessarily mean the video isn't being watched. It might, but you need other tracking to know for sure. And you do need to know in case it's not a problem that the video isn't being watched, but instead the video is being watched but isn't persuasive enough.

Is being in position 1-3 without a featured snippet better for conversions?
Yes you are right realises own confirmation bias I love how new this all is, it's so interesting and I feel we're on the cutting edge of something. I'll get some more data together and do my own little study. #alwaysbetesting

Will Landing Page Design with Large Areas of White Background Enjoy a Higher Conversion Rate?
Hi Kingalan Personally, I find that page all rather gloomy. If you are in the business of selling office space then I would make it as light and airy as possible. Giving the impression of a 70's Chelsea Hotel is not going to float my boat! However I agree with William - A/B test a couple of designs to come up with your own answer - we are not experts in the NYC property market. The important thing here is to get the page ranked and this will require extra written content which I have always found looks better on a white background. It's easier to read and assimilate. Social Media competitor anaylysis
I've not done one myself, but we use CoSchedule for our social media (and are happy with it) and this is what they recommend. The post even includes a downloadable template.

Individual statistics (not aggregated) for 'local pack' and 'organic search results' when both on the same page
I found the answer to my question on my own by reading a related blog post here on MOZ. Its very simple basically. Just add your own params to your local pack URL (Google Custom Campaigns) : https://ga-dev-tools.appspot.com/campaign-url-builder/, so you will be able to distinguish the local listings from the other organic SERP's on the same page. Thats it.

Overlay / modal for product pages - bad or good for SEO?
Hi James, Thanks for your answer and feedback! Very interesting to know that you are using a similar solution yourself. I agree that Google should be able to recognise them as part to providing product info, or enhancing UX, was simply unsure if that is really the case, or if Google would not regard them as carrying as much SEO value as if they had been "normal" product pages. Both yours and Tom's response comfort me into trying the product pages as overlays, it will be nice to try something a little bit different and test if we improve on conversion as a consequence. Regarding overlays/modals as marketing tools hurting SEO, what I was trying to say is that all the literature or cases I could find on the Internet was about overlays and modals as marketing tools - but could not find any relevant case dealing with overlays/modals as UX tools only. Therefore all the literature I could find generally considered overlays/modals as negative for SEO (since the assumption was that they were a marketing ploy). Hope this clarifies my thinking... (for ex., this WBF https://moz.com/blog/popups-seo-whiteboard-friday , or this case https://edgylabs.com/3-rules-seo-friendly-modal-windows/ , or again this case focussing on mobile https://www.keylimetoolbox.com/seo/mobile-site-use-overlays-know-issues-google-organic-search/ ). Thanks again for taking the time to answer!

Metadescription (SERP's) with green checkmarks: spammy or not?
Definitely depends on the topic/audience, like you said. It never hurts to run some tests, and don't take anyone's personal opinion on it. I would say that black check marks are better, but I may be 100% wrong in your case. Lime green frames improve CTR in some banner ads, despite looking hideous and spammy, same for red/yellow text/background combinations and other questionable things.

Will hreflang indication help single language site?
Are there any major cons to include the hreflang attribute if there isn't a translated version? My site has some pages that are translated, which we include proper hreflang tags, but some pages that do not currently have a translated page. It sounds like it would take more work to remove the tags on those pages without a translated version than to keep it. Will this cause major issues with Google?
