  • That's really very useful, thank you Matt. I have also been recommended termexplorer.com and keywordeye.com - I guess a lot of this is personal preference. I think I now have a clearer idea on the 3 or 4 tools I want to concentrate on using for my keyword research. For someone fairly new to SEO it can be confusing as there are so many tools out there. But certainly MOZ, SEMrush, Ubersuggest come up time and time again, and so I think this is where I will concentrate. Ben

  • I have a very simple logic to deal with this problem. I agree that having too many links on the page is not a very good idea both from the search engine as well as from the user point of view in many cases but there are times when you can’t do anything about it. I think the better idea is to see if the link that you are placing on the page are important from the user point view if they are then let it be but if you can reduce them, then you ideally should. The idea is to think about users first and then about search engines guidelines. Hope this helps!

  • Hey Saddat, That's a different question. I suggest you either search the Q&A to see if it has already been answered (and I believe it has), or post it as a new question. You'll get more attention that way.

  • Hi there Yes, this is called Google Personalized Search - you can learn more about it from this great Whiteboard Friday. If you want to get a more beneficial look at your rankings, I would suggest checking out Startpage or taking a look at your average position in Webmaster Tools - it's a more aggregated ranking metric in WMT as it combines multiple factors and averages your positions for that keyword/query. Also, Moz tracks keywords for you and updates you weekly. Hope this helps! Good luck!

  • Hi J.P.! I'm glad Matt is helping you; he knows his stuff. There's actually a Moz tool that could provide some insight, too—the Keyword Difficulty tool. It can give you an analysis of all the sites ranking 1-10 for any given keyword, including which factors are most likely to be helping them. You may be able to glean what's helping them pull ahead. I'd recommend Cyrus's video on the tool. Good luck!

  • You shouldn't be penalized if these are simply sister sites that are linked together in the header. This is common practice with a number of media websites, for example: xojane.com nav links over to xovain.com msnbc.com runs footer links to nbcnews.com, today.com, cnbc.com, and breakingnews.com cnet.com runs footer links to cbsinteractive.com foxnews.com runs header links to 7 other properties etc. To be conservative, I would suggest linking with the brand name of the other site - don't use a commercial anchor text. In other words, link to it as "brand name" or "brandname.com", but don't link to it as "sports news".

  • Hi John The best I can offer you from here is to experiment. Try some news that match perfectly (I wouldn't include the brand in your H1, however - regardless of what Google says) and try some that vary. Measure your performance and CTR for each and see how they compare. Which set out performed the other? I would also look into creating a news sitemap (https://support.google.com/news/publisher/answer/74288?hl=en) and look into NewsArticle schema (https://schema.org/NewsArticle). Both help you define your title better for crawlers. Let me know if you have any more questions!

  • No, you're absolutely right Patrick. The answer is, an external site (emphasis on "site") can pass link equity to more than one page on your site. An external page can too, provided those links are pointing to different pages on the recipient site. If, for example, Site A has a footer link that points to Site B's home page, those links will be devalued or penalized by Google because they're unnatural and rarely viewed or clicked on by users. If Site A feels compelled to use them, they should be nofollowed, effectively telling Google you're not trying to game the system. If, on the other hand, Site A has a unique link on Page X that points to Site B, AND it adds value, AND it's a follow link, then it will pass value. If Site A has two identical outgoing links on the same page or if one of those links is identifical except for the anchor text, then only the first will pass value. If site A has unique links on Page X that point to different pages on Site B, AND they add value, AND they are follow links, then they will pass value.

  • I _really _doubt that you'd see any negative effects from having one hyphen in the domain name. Google is trying to discourage domains like www.best-office-space-in-nyc-new-york.com—that is, spammy, keyword-stuffed domains. Of course, I can't make any guarantees on that, but I'd be pretty surprised if that one hyphen caused any noticeable trouble. That said, you may want to just check on the domain sans-hyphen, if only so you can sleep a little better.
