  • I'm pretty sure you won't get in with just aggregated news, but can have some (though I'm thinking far less than half). This - http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/news/thread?tid=73066884b4c853e1&hl=en - suggests to only submit original content. Alternatively - http://googlenewsblog.blogspot.com/2010/11/credit-where-credit-is-due.html - says you can add the source or canonical tag to give credit back to the originating site (and likely look far more trustworthy when someone checks. I had a dig around for when I last got a site into Google News but couldn't find actual content guidelines. Here's the guidelines I could find about when making a submission: Provide a good historical background of the site Show awards the site received Give stats on the site Tell them about your editors and authors (I think you need 3 editors :s) Tell them about who links to your site Make sure you are news related or mostly news related. Make sure your site complies with the technical requirements, and show them that is does. Having author bio pages I believe is also a plus. You can always submit it and see what feedback you are given.

  • Danny Dover's book looks like a text book but reads more like a blog and focuses more on how to be an SEO practioner and what you need to do and know whereas the Art of SEO is more about the SEO knowledge. I'd definitely recommend reading both.

  • Here's a quote by Tompt from one of my posts The last thing I read about nofollows essentially said that if you nofollow a link it doesn't boost the juice going to the rest of the page, the juice is still essentially "used". Here's theSEOmoz blog post about it. http://www.seomoz.org/blog/google... It is from 2009 but one of the mozzers did link to it recenty when asked about nofollows so I would imagine it's still valid. -- Google invests millions into it's algorithm. If you're posting actual useful, relevant stuff which doesn't set off too many spam flags - It'll notice.

  • Sorted - thank god.  Google haven't told me what was wrong only that it has been fixed. I can now see the results for the past three weeks. Many thanks for all the responses and help

  • What about using another TLD but exact match and the 'Use Facebook as my website' feature? Depends what you're testing for really. I'm pretty sure that when I registered a new domain and set up a FB page on the same day the FB page outranked it, but after a few days the site was on top so if there's any links between the site and the social pages (and back again) I presume Google can actually figure it out.

  • This might help: My client is a guest ranch that does a lot of different things:  guided fishing/hunting trips, horseback riding, weddings, small conferences, vacations, etc. They have two sites, one for the fishing and hunting (6 months old), the other for everything else (12 year old site). I'm trying to get them to come up with more content, which is slowly happening. The facebook page is doing well with about 3k active users. There is a lot of linkbuilding potential for both sites but that is going to take more time and effort than money...i think.

  • Honestly, no idea. What I would be "comfortable" with personally would be no more than 20.

  • Picking your channels is always important. My recommendation for on-site video is to publish the videos into your existing sitemap on the domain you want to rank for, and file a video sitemap with Google.  Video results are often given priority over text results and so Google will feature your video content because many sites just don't have a video function and they see great results from clicks and so forth when it comes to video. Having a YouTube channel is also good, but it has to be a part of your strategy to keep it going.  Do you want people to comment on YouTube or on your site?  Do you want people searching to be able to find your site, or your YouTube page?  You want to funnel the traffic where you want it to go, and of course on your own site you can control the Calls to Action and things of that nature. Here is an excellent SEOmoz blog from Kate Matsudaira that talks about creating a video strategy and some of the options and opportunities for success using video. http://www.seomoz.org/blog/creating-online-video-strategy Hope this helps!

  • Hi Chris, I'm following up on older, unanswered questions. Did you go ahead with that strategy (which I think is a good one btw)? If so, how did it work for you? Can you share any of your experiences here? Thanks!

  • There are two great posts in SEOmoz itself that I found very useful; Competitive backlink analysis and Using Google CSE Both use the tools within SEOmoz itself and will help you mine for link candidates more widely, and then analyse and target the links you want to gain in depth. With respect to which pages to link to, using the above tools will enable you to link with a wider variety of anchor text to specific pages - keeping the relevance as high as possible. Personally I would be inclined to balance between category and product - if you can get a targeted link for a niche phrase to a specific product page - do it, if the domain you are gaining the link from is in your field, but not product specific, go for the category link.

  • I believe I've seen at least one other report of the case issue, either in the public Q&A or on Search Engine Roundtable. In any case, it's not just you. I'll bookmark this thread, and add any case information to the thread as I find it. For the titles, Google has been doing that for a little while to some sites. Barry Schwartz has written about it at http://www.seroundtable.com/google-title-selection-12989.html.

  • I think people may be misunderstanding your question and thinking you want to make a feed of your content on your own sites. You're wanting to create a feed of content you've written and published on several different article directories / databases so I think Yahoo Pipes will be a good bet: http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/ . I should mention though that the reason these aren't indexed is probably more to do with the quality of article directories and the content found on them. Google doesn't tend to think very highly of them and I personally wouldn't build links using this type of site these days. Just my two cents. Good luck!
