Could adding canonical tags to large Ecommerce site ever hurt rankings? Temporarily?
well, no downside if you do it right. Ive seen (and been part of!) when you do this type of thing on a large site via automation and don't realise all the implications of where you are redirecting. When you start doing this stuff, you appreciate what people mean when they advocate KISS You may well experience changes to indexation etc as you are effectively changing the flow of PR through your site and its pretty hard to know what the effects will be beforehand on a large complex site Make sure you have a good view on your analytics & try this on a smaller part of your site and see what the effect is (if you can)

What's the real deal with nofollow
Based on your comment I decided to confirm my understanding. I had thought the "nofollow" tag in the header was a directive to not follow any links on the page. Apparently I was mistaken. I created a test page and verified the result with two link checkers. Both view the link as a followed link despite the "nofollow" tag in the header. I will modify my original reply.

How do I get Bing to recognize my site as a "News" source?
I don't personally have any experience with this, but I have heard that it's harder than getting into Google News. Until someone else chimes in, this post at Search Engine Roundtable might help. http://www.seroundtable.com/bing-news-13146.html

Using robots.txt to deal with duplicate content
It will be any part of the URL that doesn't handle navigation, so look at what you can delete off the URL without breaking the link to the product page. Take a look at this: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/10/new-parameter-handling-tool-helps-with.html Remember, this will only work with Google! This is another interesting video from Matt Cutts about removing content from Google: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/01/remove-your-content-from-google.html

Certain Domains no longer recognised by open site explorer
Thanks for your thoughts. Having looked into it, we've got 10 linking root domains which used to register through SEOmoz but are no longer doing so whose domain authority is above 70. This would suggest that they are still important enough to be crawled, however I guess I would need to get the PA of the linking pages that have been lost incase they are less important pages on large domains. I'll keep this question updated with anything else that comes up.

How new Instant Pages Affect Analytics?
You're not the only one with that question. Google replied to WebProNews at http://www.webpronews.com/google-instant-pages-analytics-2011-06 See that post for a more complete response, but in brief they said that they're only going to "only issues the prerender hint when it is confident that it knows where the user will click, in some cases it will mispredict, resulting in a page that has appeared to load but was never actually shown to the user." and go on to say that there's a new page visibility API that should help weed out a false positive.

Is it better to drip feed content?
Good luck. Like I said, this is just me being silly. I pray to my Google shrine twice a day and this is what it tells me. All at once or drip feed, either way your content gets up there!

Lost positions, how to get them back?
To restore those old urls is not possible. (~400 of them). I've removed them (via google webmasters), but I still see them as errors in google webmaster tools (but they are decreasing slowly).

Personalised PRO Dashboard reports?
That costs an extra $100 a month! Ouch, that's quite a whopper increase just to be able to use my own logo. I'm sure there are more benefits of the Pro Plus option but I'm already struggling to cover the cost of just a PRO account at $99 at the moment. Would you ever make this option available in PRO?
