Blog page outranks static page for KW -- why?
I'm still puzzled about what caused the page to rank better. One thing you probably thought of is to try and link from your blog page to your static one and see how this goes. Also you might consider the rel=author option when linking to your static page. At 3AM, I'm mostly writing down what pops up in my head. If your static pages goes up, then you at least will be sure that the blog page is performing better and not your static page being pushed down due to some external or internal issues.

Google search results
They have a "learning machine algorithm" so the servers do a best guess. When searching for apples it just looks at what most users where searching for and displays that result.

Open link to a new window, +/-?
I think it depends how many explanations you need to put in and how long they are or how the information of more explanation needs to be compared to the other information. Plus, you have to factor in how flexible your site is, coding-wise and what your team can accomplish. Opening the link in a new window is great when you have a few things as it's easy to code. Plus, it's important to have in a new window if there's information the customer needs to compare from the explanation. (Like Rene mentioned, sizing charts for clothing.) You can also use a hover to show the information, but I'd only use it if the explanation is super short, like say a definition. The third option is having the page expand with the information when they click on it. Of course, this option will be the most technical to code.

Contest Page Generating Links
You do lose some, but I believe most of the link juice will flow if you 301 redirect the page. I'd probably do what YouON suggests and leave the page intact with useful links to elsewhere on your site.

Is warriorforum.com information reliable?
I've spoken with several people who fell prey to the 'specials' on that forum. At best, you may see marginal results if you're targeting keywords with ultra-low competition. At worst, your site will get penalized heavily (rankings-wise) for a high number of spammy links popping up over a short period of time.

How long till you rank for your domain name?
I believe new domain names usually take 2 months (average) to "age". Beyond that, your ability to rank will rely on standard seo ranking factors.

Can we submit Press release to Google news
Google News does not accept individual press releases, it merely aggregates news from a variety of sources around the internet. I have had good experience with using PRWeb from my press release distribution. In my experience, all of the press releases I have submitted with their service have ended up in Google News, and they have brought my clients a fair amount of traffic in the process.

Strange link backs
Please see Carin's response to this issue in another Q&A: http://www.seomoz.org/q/competitive-edu-research-via-open-site-explorer In short, it's a bug with the last Linkscape index. OSE is scheduled to be updated on Tuesday and that will (hopefully) resolve this issue.
