First off you should go to webmaster tools and make sure that you have verified that you are the owner of both the www and non-www version. After this you can tell Google your preferred version of the page under the site settings within webmaster tools. This by itself will tell Google that it should index the preferred version. Furthermore you said that the non-www redirects to the www version now. Google will pick this up in time and will start indexing the www version. Your question about why only one got indexed is hard to answer like this. If it's not the robots.txt than it could be a link rel="canonical" pointing towards the non-www version?

Hi Rickus, As long as you remember the https --> http redirects and changing any canonicals, you really shouldn't see any issues. There is no advantage or disadvantage to one over the other either way. Check out this MOZ post on best practice redirection for hints. That said, do remember that Google will treat this like a completely new site and with it, you might see some bouncing around of positions in the SERPs while everything is settling down again. That might be completely unavoidable. -Andy

Hi Eva, Like Google, it can take time for your site to be accepted into the index for the first time. Hi there, Creating a new website to replace the old one you have to make sure that the old website (old page's) isn't accessible by crawlers. So a quick solution would be to add a robots.txt to your domain and disallow the url's of the pages you don't want to be crawled. Here is a cheat sheet from MOZ on how disallow works and how to implement it.

I would recommend embedding the video higher up on the page. in multiple instances, I've seen videos fail to get indexed because they're way "below the fold" and my gut says that is what is happening here.

Personally i prefer to go for the longer url because of the breadcrumbs and the easier url navigation structure. A lot of people delete part of the url to get back to a previous step in the website architecture. Your 1st way allows that to be done fairly easily and the url explains exactly where someone is on the site. When someone sees your url in the SERP's this would also indicate that they are finding a product in the proper category. The problem with this is that if the webshop has a product in several categories. I build a female clothing webshop a while back and they had categories for top-wear, bottom-wear, specific clothing articles(blouses, jeans, shoes etc) and for each brand. This meant that a product would be in at least 3 different categories within the site. For this reason i chose to set the canonical to: http://www.domain.com/product/ in this particular case. If your webshop does not have this problem and will not get this problem in the future i would recommend the longer url's.

You've got it. This is businesses attempting to be listed first in alphabetically-organized directories, like the Yellow Pages. Doesn't work for Local, unfortunately:)

Morris, As strong component of a linking strategy, the heyday of press releases has come and gone but press releases are still valuable.  They're valuable in the sense that they've always been valuable--as a means to reach a targeted audience with a creative message about a topic that will be of interest to them. Press releases are an active engagement tactic, in that you research what publishers you want to target, you craft a message that is going to catch their attention, you send it via a channel you expect them to be listening on, and then you expect to engage and develop relationships with your target publishers.  Unfortunately, many people today think of the press release as sort of a passive tool--you write something that fits into the template you pay your money then you hit submit and you wait for all the links to come in. Don't think of press releases as a way to get links, think of them as tools in building new relationships.

With this type of discrepancy, that's often the case. Either the site has been penalized or the linking sites have been devalued in some way (say, a link network). DA/PA basically model the raw strength of the link profile, but they don't account for some quality factors. Of course, that assumes the toolbar PR is up-to-date and accurate, which is a fairly big assumption these days, IMO.

Hi Irving, As Yusuf suggested, .htaccess files are not publicly viewable - they're inaccessible by public users by default. For your own site's .htaccess file, simply downloading the file via FTP and opening with Notepad/similar will work. But I take it you were looking for a tool to check the .htaccess file for public sites. If there is such a tool, it's news to me. Best, Mike

You can install on windows but its more complicated than Linux. The main thing you need to do it make sure the new URLs are the same as the old URLs (play with the permalink structure). If you do that, rankings shouldn't be affected. If you can't get the URLs to match up exactly, make sure to set up 301 redirects from the old URLs to the new ones. You may lose traffic temporarily while Google adjust to the new URLs, but should bounce back within 2 weeks. If there is custom coding involved, you'd need to convert to PHP.

This still wouldn't be my first choice, but if the new website does not reference the business in any way, then hopefully it will not create issues of consistency or trust with Google. I still think it's a better idea, however, to put the promo on the website itself.

Hello, I'm working on the same niche (software), the best practice from my point of view is ALWAYS use the same page, and update it according the new release of the product, never remove (you're losing inbound links, Authority and even other important trust factors. Only is recommended "remove" the discontinued products as by including a 301 to the most similar product page on your site and also take care about never redirect all your discontinued pages to the home page (a very common error).
