Jon,
We do a few real estate sites (and I live with a cute lady who is an agent with the top firm here). So, I would say this about what Casey said...he is correct. The design will not work for RE in my opinion. It is so flawed as to impact the SEO for the simple reason that the bounce rate will be very high. With a $5K budget per month, you have to get the site right first: So,
Don't do anything to the site and go do keyword analysis for your area around RE. Typical mistakes are things like focusing on Real Estate Brokerage as a keyword term. Look at your regions of the area where you do best or where your presence is strongest or you have agents who really know that area. (See what Brent said, it is not necessary to eat the whole pie today, save some for tomorrow). People search for homes for sale, townhomes for sale, etc. and they add areas sometimes, but usually the largest area so, Seattle if anywhere near seattle.
Now, typically, the top terms will be Real Estate Seattle, Real Estate Bellevue, etc. But, don't trust me, do the research. Also, look at high rises, condos, etc. Sometimes people have failed to capitalize on those searches and a world awaits you.
Once you are clear that you are going to go after a few basic terms and a few basic areas now we begin. First, go look at Zillow, Realestate.com, Trulia, and see how those )&*__((Y^^(( companies are doing what they are doing. They are capturing the SERP real estate by having agents on board that allow them access to the MLS. Don't get me started.
Now, once you have say 5 to 6 areas you need to think about what does a person who is searching for a home want to see? That is what you have to give them. When I opened your site, I thought it was a travel blog because of the images. No one cares about the pretty pictures. They want homes, townhomes, condos, high rises, etc.
Now, focus all on those areas. Many MLS feeds are in I Frames which is not helpful. If you have a work around there that is great. For the areas where you are focusing, you want lots of info on the area on a single page with a couple of featured homes they can click on. Obviously you want on site search that works.
Lastly, the most important investment for RE is Local SEO. Spend there next after the site.
Now, if this has been helpful I have a request: for every plugin you use on your WP site, make a contribution of $25. to the developer of that OS plugin/widget/etc. Let's keep open source open by making sure they are compensated. Yes, linked to them too.
thanks
