We get that sometimes also -it shows up as "other keywords" i just go into analytics and find them that way.

I have about 0.02%-0.06% depending on the client for mail.google.com but it reallly depends on your keywords you are targeting aswell.

On the content network don't bother looking at ctr unless you want to test a new ad

I start with keyword research then on site optimization - Title tags content etc then i do a press release with anchor text links with pr web and then move on to top level directories. Then Find sites to introduce you to the world (depends on what type of site you are) Look at competitor back links for ideas -  I hope this helps with a starting point .

I never used it -if it would have automatically changed bids to hit the desired position and had a cap on the bid that would have been great but the way it was didn't work for me.

You need to identify what your angle will be are you after a guest post or a paid link or a banner etc

Then you need to separate your sites into high and low value targets - The low value targets just shoot over a generic pitch or offer with a subject and heading for that site. Email or use form on site -Start by saying you like their blog etc

For the high value ones  call if you can. Create a blog post for them to post as a guest post and send it over to them to use with some info about you etc. Or start commenting on the blog to gain a relationship then contact and ask for a way to work together.

I agree 50% ctr for first position in a serp is high i have seen keywords in number 1 with 629 clicks out of over 2k search volume for the word

I agree we always put the blogs on mysite.com/blog to build the main site.

Another option that is done  is to get a keyword rich domain for the blog and try to rank on that keyword - the down side is you now are doing seo on 2 sites and your blog isnt branded as yours.
