If we're talking purely organic results, these are not nearly as dependent on having a physical address on-page (nor citations of any kind) to rank. This is why developing landing pages optimized for city/product/service terms is the most commonly recommended strategy for service area businesses which lack physical locations in the cities they serve - a plumber can build 5 pages optimized for his service cities in hopes of achieving some organic visibility for these terms, even if he can't achieve local pack rankings. By the same token, organic results for local-intent terms typically feature a strong presence of directories like Yelp, YellowPages, etc. These directories do not have a physical presence - they simply feature information about businesses in various cities. So, in the example you're giving, Google is presently judging the rep management company's landing pages to be relevant, though from what you've explained, they don't sound to me like they would provide a very valuable user experience. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do about this. Typically, when Google's organic results appear to contain low quality pages, it is because: There is a paucity of information for Google to choose from, meaning there aren't enough high quality results for Google to display. Spammy quality practices are managing to trick Google into judging pages as relevant when a manual check would show that they really aren't. The business has fudged its way into looking authoritative with things like building a mass of links that are passing under Google's radar, for the moment. This could, of course, change at any time, demoting the site from its high rankings. There is something else about the pages that Google considers relevant answers to our searches, even if we can't figure out what on earth it would be. In all 3 cases, your best bet of outranking a non-quality website is to audit it and then surpass the efforts it has made so that you are providing Google with an excellent reason to rank your site higher than the weaker competitor.

  • There isn't anything different you should be doing for Bing on site. The page you mentioned is indexed in Bing (url:https://www.sitegeek.com/000webhost is indexed in Bing). So it's tough to understand what might be going on. There are many potential issues here. 1. The language changes causing an issue. Bing's tag is different from Google's. 2. The site quality or content quality is not enough for Bing to want to index. I doubt that, but it's a potential issue. 3. Sitemap issues. Bing is not as good as Google at telling us what the issues are with sitemaps. Without doing a full analysis, there isn't much we can do to tell you the problem. 4. Sometimes it's just Bing.   • Hi Katherine, Thanks so much for writing in about this. Moz Local draws our categories directly from Google, so you are right to notice a correlation. Unfortunately, you are right that Google's categories are not all-inclusive, but whether you sign up for Moz Local or not, participation in Google's local product is a must for pretty much every local business. Because of this, rule of thumb here is to find the closest match you can for your broadest category and then use the business description to explain the nuances of the business. So, per Ryan's example, you could choose Shipping Company or Shipping Services for the main category for one of your businesses, and in the business description, describe the packing and crating services you provide. Not perfect - I know - but there is know known way to influence Google's categories. It's totally up to them. You're not alone in your frustration with this. Mike Blumenthal, himself, can be quoted as stating,"Google’s category system is woefully inadequate at its job of indicating what a business actually does." And, the Google forum is full of tickets like this one: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!searchin/business/no$20category/business/ymdjxTXmDxI/g5OTvVGwqcoJ For many common business models, the category system works just fine, but when there are facets of the business that the category system doesn't cover, going with the closest possible match is the only option. And, of course, be sure that your citations descriptions and website are highly descriptive of your services.

  • Hi Guys I apologise for not responding sooner. Attached are "most" of our keywords we are ranking for (for individual pages) since launching in Feb this year. We're now starting to execute a marketing plan that will contribute to earning links. Hopefully this will begin to rank our more "competitive" keywords. Have you guys worked with many start ups? How quickly were they able to rank for non competitive/competitive keywords? Would really like to hear from you regarding your experiences, to ensure I get everything right from the get go. Thanks.   • Hi, I am also very confused by the conflicting information out there. On one hand the general advice appears to be get your text to code ratio over 25%, but on the other hand Moz now includes as one of its "Spam Score"  factors and I quote "**Site Mark-up is Abnormally Small - **There's a high ratio of visible text compared to HTML, JavaScript, etc." So which is right for the best SERPS SEO???? Help, Glenn
