How do you handle a site with inherited negative links, but no penalty?
If the links are low quality disavow them, better to be proactive rather than wait for a penalty then having to go through the process anyway.

Choosing root domain for a subdomain
From my experience*, using a subfolder structure will yield the best results. I think the more important factor is how these pages are linked to from within other pages on your website. You need to build links from high authority internal pages to your degree pages using keyword rich anchor text. If you do this from both websites, I don't think it will make much of a difference which domain the pages are hosted on. i.e. if you link to the degree pages sitewide from both domains, you will see similar results hosting them on either domain. So if you are going to move the degrees to the other domain, you might as well switch to a subfolder structure. If not, focus on building a stronger internal link profile. *As you said, this topic is highly debated. Google's official stance is that there is no difference for ranking between subfolder/subdirectory. They also say that if the content on the subdomain is highly relevant to the content on the root domain, they will be treated as the same domain (authority overflows).

Hosting Sites under same IP / subdomain usage?
Hi Paul, The difference would be made how you plan to use these domains, if they are going to inter-link to each other, they may be seen as Link-wheel strategy (black hat strategy). If they are competing for same industry space (as in keywords) or working to benefit the same company together, then again that may be a problem. As for the same IP, there are several websites hosted on same server IP at a time. I hope this helps, please respond if you have further questions. Regards, Vijay

Removing massive number of no index follow page that are not crawled
Personally I don't agree with setting internal filter URLs to nofollow. I set noindex as you have done and add the filter attributes to the Search Console > Crawl > URL Parameters. For the option "Which URLs with this parameter should Googlebot crawl?" you can set "No URLs" (if the filters are uniform throughout the site). "No URLs: Googlebot won't crawl any URLs containing this parameter. This is useful if your site uses many parameters to filter content. For example, telling Googlebot not to crawl URLs with less significant parameters such as pricefromand priceto (likehttp://www.examples.com/search?category=shoe&brand=nike&color=red&size=5&pricefrom=10&priceto=1000) can prevent the unnecessary crawling of content already available from a page without those parameters (likehttp://www.examples.com/search?category=shoe&brand=nike&color=red&size=5)"

Massive drop in sales - how do I find out why?
Further to the above, I think I've solved that issue. There was an error on that product you used as your example, it was loading an attribute as a variation that didn't exist. I've removed it now.

The importance of meta keywords?
Meta keywords have never hurt any of our customer sites and can only help with other less known search engines. So I disagree with most here and say "keep them!"

Google's knowledge graph carousel
Hi Patrick, Thanks so much for your feedback. I've managed to edit images on the business snippet, just not on the carousel, which is maddening! Definitely going to have to look into the Schema Markup - does this only provide an image for the snippet, or for the carousel as well? Cheers again

Changing domain from .net to .se
Search Engine Land has a blog that features the 10 most overlooked steps when changing a domain: http://searchengineland.com/changing-domain-names-2016-10-easily-overlooked-steps-can-save-seo-248484 I would definitely check that out. But here is the TL;DR version: Contact your hosting provider FIRST Verify all versions of the new domain in Google Search Console (GSC) Change the setting for WordPress address (and site address) Mod_rewrite or ISAPI_Rewrite changes Back up your site BEFORE you pull the trigger Edit backup plugin settings after the domain name change Submit a change of address in Google Search Console (GSC) and Bing Webmaster Tools (BWT) Change all internal links Edit Google Analytics settings and add annotation(s) Apply advanced settings in Google Search Console (GSC) Reconnect Google Search Console (GSC) and Google Analytics (GA) Also, don't forget that domain age plays a role in your domain authority and rankings!

HTTPS, free certificates and Google seo
If there are redirects on your site from http to https, I believe the best practice is to actually leave your old sitemap in place in the http property, as well as submitting the new ssl sitemap to that property. We learned this AFTER recently moving from http to https and most of our URL structure changing as well. However, with 301s set up for as many site URLs as possible, we saw the new ones gain in indexation and rank rather quickly, even without the old http sitemap.

Duplicate content and 404 errors
Ali, If you are on WordPress you can try some of these. First, set up the free Yoast SEO plugin if you have not already. I have been working on this exact issue. The way Tags are set up (on the client site) we are getting duplicate pages. I am trying a couple of things: In Yoast XML Sitemaps > Taxonomies you can set "Tags" to "Not in Sitemap". Removing them from the XML Sitemap will at least lessen the frequency that Google accesses Taged pages. In Yoast Titles & Meta > Taxonomies you can select Index or Noindex for your Tags. Following the Tag idea, you might get a 404 if a Tag is changed or deleted. It's hard to diagnose 404s without seeing them. Consider a custom 404 error page, if you have not already. That will at least improve the user experience. With htaccess you set different redirects and custome 404 pages depending on the site section. Tags in WP don't seem to add much benefit, and probably cause more problems (like dupe content). Even if you are diligent with Tag consisitency, most blogs end up with nearly duplicate Tags. There are many Moz posts on the topic of duplicate content in WP specific to Tags that might further illuminate your question. Did you change anything universally, like switch to https? Missed redirects can cause a 404. The WP Broken Links in Tools will direct you straight to the 404 pages. Here are some more tips for dealing with 404 in WP: http://www.wpbeginner.com/showcase/6-best-free-404-plugins-for-wordpress/ The WP plugin "Redirection" is well regarded, but use caution with lots of ecomm url variables. Hope this helps!

Need advice: How to replace a high-ranking pdf with a landing page -- without dropping much in rank?
Thanks Chris, Bernadette and Donna for your thoughtful answers. After considering your advice (and the resources you shared), I think it's worth a try. If nothing else, it will be a good experiment (and fairly low risk -- even though the pdf ranks #1, it's not a high-volume term). I think it will be important for the landing page to provide a really meaty, useful synopsis (as Chris suggested) that still offers some value on its own. Thanks again! -John

Error Code 902 & 403
Hi There, As for 902 errors, it seems that your server is blocking the Moz crawler as an activity that it doesn't recognize. You should contact your hosting provider to get a solution. You can read a similar answer here https://moz.com/community/q/error-code-902-for-crawl-diagnostics 403 errors are answered here , it seems to be related to server / site blocking moz https://moz.com/community/q/what-is-the-best-way-to-correct-403-access-denied-errors https://moz.com/community/q/403-error-code-but-page-shows-no-error https://moz.com/community/q/403-forbidden-error-how-to-solve-them I hope this helps, please feel free to ask further questions.
