  • The Page Authority of 1 basically means that the pages don't have any links from any external source and that the only links that are pointing towards them are probably from your own internal pages that also don't have a ton of links from external sources. I wouldn't worry in itself too much about a decrease in Domain Authority. A change from 35 to 20 is nothing in the end if you take into account that the web is growing and that Moz indexes since 2012 have grown as well. So relatively speaking it's logical that your ranking would always decrease with that as well. I would focus on building great links first and getting a bigger audience before I'd start worrying around internal link structures.

  • Yes, it's normal. Yes, you should fill it out. Some of the data is undoubtedly redundant, but you need to help Google connect / associate the two. They're two separate products.

  • Thank you very much Julie, I really appreciated your words. I have wondered so many times what Google think of "quality", and why before us there are always very low quality websites distributing the exact same music for free (often copyrighted music, which is illegal) and most of those sites are full of ads. Is that quality? We could open a new discussion thread on the "What is quality to Google?" topic, I think it'd be very popular! Thank you again.

  • Hi, thanks for your help. SERPed doesn't however, allow access. You need to ask permission to use any tools. I think I may possible have answered my own question. I rebuilt the site recently, added SRL cert and moved it over to a https: instead of http: Apparently Google sees this as a completely different domain which I never knew. I have added this to my google search console. It has acknowledged it but is still not allowing me see my back links through search console (no data). It is still also strange that all of these tools like ahrefs are showing the back links for older links to http but not the most recent back links for https:

  • I have a section of my website where I heavily use embedded content.  Embeds from Youtube, Slideshare, Twitter, Quora etc.  Google thinks they're thin, and they don't show up in my analytics because you can read the content without clicking on the page. http://getonthemap.us/twitter/blog But I like them, and I think they're helpful. So I no-indexed all but one of the blog posts in that section.  It retains the backlinks to the posts, but cleans me up with Google. If you're deleting, can't you do that quickly from your console?

  • Page speed is the obvious one which can certainly be impacted by poor hosting selection. Specfically server response time when viewing page speed insights within GA are impacted by your hosting setup. Beyond page speed reliability is a factor as well. You may have great average server response times and page load speeds but if you see frequent outages or slow-down periods it may have an impact on your traffic. It's also good to understand and choose the right type of hosting. Do you need a DIY hosting package where you are expected to maintain things or are you looking for something managed. Managed hosting can help lessen the stress of hosting depending on your business needs.

  • Thank you Chris for your in-depth answer, you just confirmed what I suspected. To clarify though, what I am trying to save here by noindexing those subsequent pages is "indexing budget" not "crawl budget". You know the famous "indexing cap"? And also, tackling possible "duplicate" or "thin" content issues with such "similar but different" pages... fact is, our website has been hit by Panda several times, we recovered several times as well, but we have been hit again with the latest quality update of last June, and we are trying to find a way to get out of it once for all. Hence my attempt to reduce the number of similar indexed pages as much as we can. I have just opened a discussion on this "Panda-non-sense" issue, and I'd like to know your opinion about it: https://moz.com/community/q/panda-rankings-and-other-non-sense-issues Thank you again.

  • I don't think any benchmark exists. Obviously, a lot more people look at a New York Times article, at least the writer hopes so, then look at an individual home for sale. In addition, who's the audience? A NYT article that appeals to a social media savvy audience will have more shares than an article geared towards a less social audience. Same with your home for sale. Is it in Palo Alto or Bozeman, Montana? Any benchmark would be useless.

  • On-site optimization only "qualifies" you to "appear" in a SERP. Ranking in that SERP is an entirely different and separate process and a Heck of a lot harder to pull off.

  • To pat myself on the back a bit, one of the cleverest things I think we did was set up a project gallery map that has indexable pages for each town where we've installed a solar project, replete with URL, title, meta tag, etc. e.g. https://www.revisionenergy.com/solar-projects/shelburne-new-hampshire/ These rank well for any of the town name + state searches, for the state level searches we are not as present as we'd like / used to be. We have pages like these to highlight our various locations (a local SEO play) - https://www.revisionenergy.com/locations/brentwood-nh-solar-showroom/ We tried to make state-specific solar guides, e.g. https://www.revisionenergy.com/locations/go-solar-in-new-hampshire/ however these seemed to perform less well (were poorly indexed and don't rank).

  • Hi Gautam, I have installed around 5-6 different social sharing plugins for Wordpress and I found the one that had the most features and reasonable load time to be Shareaholic.  I haven't performed any benchmark tests in terms of speed with this plugin though. A while back I was performing some speed tests and discovered that just about every social media widget/code was adding a significant amount of kb's to a webpage, Facebook in particular if I recall correctly.   This was either hand coded or using a plugin.  Once I disabled all social media widgets/plugins then my page score was fine.  Now, again, I haven't run any benchmark tests, but I am assuming that most of this code has already been cached in your visitors website browser by the time they get to your site, since they have already visited another site that has this same code, so the load time is not noticeable to them when they arrive at your site. Once you add any 3rd party code to your site you are prone to issues beyond your control, since you are no longer hosting the code. For example, say a plugin's server is having latency issues.  This might make it appear like your website is still trying to load, even though everything appears fine, but if you check the status bar of your browser it will indicate one of your social media scripts is still loading.  This can happen with any 3rd party code added, for example, live chat. Hope my explanation helps.  Let me know if you have any questions. Regards, Kevin

  • So the issue is that you have sub-pages which contain a lot of the same information about cushioning, Gore-Tex etc? If the content is reasonably unique, then it's a case of optimising each sub page for 'trainer model name cushioning' or 'trainer model name Gore-Tex' as appropriate. Alternatively, you could create one high level glossary page for all the terms used for all the trainers, and then canonicalise each sub page to that one - then you won't risk the duplicate content filter, and provide a useful resource for people who might be looking for Gore Tex Trainers, rather than Nike Model One With Gore-Tex Trainers...
