  • This might be a whole new thread, but how does an internal link work if you are linking to a page that is already in the main menu of the page you are linking from. A top level product page for example. Is it worth creating anchor text links if they will be the second link discovered by the spiders?

  • Hey Justin! It usually takes only a few hours to populate your keyword metrics in your list, but sometimes it can take up to 24 hours. If you're not seeing data populate after that time feel free to write into us at help@moz.com, and we can take a look!

  • No problem. Your best bet would be to avoid subdomains and have separate entities via ccTLD as you've mentioned is the plan. You could do a sub-directory structure (.com/au, .com/us, etc..) but honestly that gets pretty messy. I've got a client that has some countries on different ccTLDs and some that share a TLD, and the ones that share the .com are the messy ones.

  • From a UX point of view, it's a little deceiving that the link says 'Full Description', but then it's not any longer than the snippet up by the button. This could have a minor impact on SEO. I'd either shorten the snippet, or expand the description below in the tab. Overall though, from an SEO perspective, this isn't much different than you'd see on Amazon where they have the bulleted list up top, then a written out description below.

  • Hey Cole, Good question. There are a couple of different routes you could take with the old or expired content. Leave as is, redirect to more relevant current content or remove it entirely from your site. My recommendation would be to redirect these old pages to the most relevant updated content unless they are receiving any significant amount of traffic. If the traffic is at 0 and the page is indexed, you are probably better off increasing the page authority of a more recent article or page by using a 301 redirect. You'll also want to ask what is the best option for user experience, it may be beneficial to have these posts in a searchable archive for users. There is a great article describing the options in a post on the Moz blog entitled "How Should You Handle Expired Content." Hope my recommendation and the article help you make a decision. Best of luck with organizing your site.

  • Rather than creating an extra page to alert users on the brand change, why not use some kind of on page cue for the new home page to alert users. Common options are Top or bottom of page alert bars modal popup hero image or temporary homepage treatment Use these cues to alert users of the change and invite them to manually browse your page with more detail about the transition.

  • Hi Jamie, I think I'm a little confused by the situation/question. If he wants users who land on the .com domain to stay on the .com domain, this is the default behaviour of a website so he could simply remove the 301 redirect. Doing this would double the maintenance and SEO work required so it's rarely a good idea unless he has a lot of resources to throw at it. Also, having 2 websites that are absolutely identical is dangerous; you won't get 'penalised' for it but the rankings would likely be pretty bad. If he were to go down the route of running 2 sites, the best way to handle this is to write content that appeals to the users in each of those locations. The most obvious difference being UK English vs US but the way content is written for each country will typically contain regional differences too.

  • Hi Leggo, thanks for the question! Your current setup is definitely not optimal for SEO, as you are discovering. There are a few things that you can do to help yourself out here. First, there are three good resources here on Moz that you should check out (the last 2 done by me in 2012, but still very relevant): https://moz.com/learn/seo/internal-link https://moz.com/blog/internal-linking-strategies-for-2012-and-beyond https://moz.com/blog/smarter-internal-linking-whiteboard-friday On to your specific questions. You ask how to set up your internal linking. Your current setup of linking to just 20 pages internally is definitely not helping you out because you are effectively just telling Google about those 20 articles and not the longtail of articles that you have. XML sitemaps are for discovery purposes for Google, not ranking. An HTML sitemap is a must for you if you have a lot of content and can also help with discoverability and a bit with rankings as well, but it's definitely not all you need to do. If your content is structured well (in categories that make sense, tagged, etc), then you can set up a system (all depends on your CMS how this is configured) that links similar articles with other similar articles. Some sites have done smart things with linking to specific articles that have more potential search volume, and deprioritizing the number of internal links to articles that don't have much potential. In the latter case, eventually you should audit if you should remove those lower volume or quality pages to help your site overall. You say that it is indeed the case that you have these pages. I would at first not put them in the sitemap. Then, decide if you want to a) update them to make them quality or b) remove them. That's an internal decision based off of current available resources (time, people) and opportunity. I've done both in the past (updated or removed) and both can definitely help. It just depends on your overall strategy for your site! Good luck!

  • It's a relief (that your traffic has not dropped)! I suggest you go to the sales IQ support forum for a starter. Someone there may be able to help. I saw one other thread about analytics not being accurate and it was resolved by an employee fairly quickly.

  • Hi Tim, In addition to that important link Dmitrii has shared, things to consider: Be sure each location has its own local phone number Be sure each location has its own landing page on the website, featuring that number Be sure citations for each location clearly, consistently feature that number on the major platforms. Differentiation of locations and consistency of data likely play a role in Google's trust.
