Linkbuilding - Suspicious? Seems like they still help!
Eventually they may, especially if too many people start to exploit it. It took them over THREE years to negate the link farms. And that's the main frustration. You can stay purists and avoid any/all unnatural or black hat tactics, but in the mean time it feels like a missed opportunity too.

What to do when a Bad URL has to stay?
I agree with James here. Especially if you have anchor text in the link, people aren't going to see that URL as much. While it's not the best URL, I've certainly seen worse. Do you have any update you can give us with any interesting lessons learned or things that you did?

HTML5, semantic web & SEO
This is something we will be experimenting with in the future. For now, I think we, as SEO's should be considering HTML5 as it will be the future of the semantic web. Until people start experimenting and trying it out we won't really know and I think there is a definite divide at the moment between HTML5 developers and SEO's. Theoretically, having an explicit , <header>, <nav>etc should make it quicker and easier for SE's to parse and as we know, Google likes things that make it's spiders job easier/quicker. But this is just hypothesis at the moment.</nav> </header>

Our link building strategy - affiliates and trophies
'Post response' deleted my answer. I'll try and remember what I said! I think Rand's WBF was focusing largely on new websites with link portfolios that consisted almost entirely of 1000s of 'dogdy links'. Provided that your website is aged (and it sounds like it definitely is) and that you have a mix of natural and 'artificial' links then you have nothing to worry about. While I don't know, I would imagine that Google takes far more kindly to image links than text links; simply because text links have much more weight and therefore more power to manipulate. Anyway, you have a totally legitimate link building strategy and I would suggest that even if your site was brand new there wouldn't be an issue.
