  • Hi Gianni, There are a ton of reasons why your website might have slipped down the SERPs or dropped rankings. It's almost certainly not because of your image. If you want, you can PM me your URL and I'll have a look. Nick

  • Another way to get authentic mentions of other areas without being spammy is to have testimonials from clients that include their city names. "I had a wonderful experience using Joe Smith as my real estate lawyer. Blah blah blah Jane Doe, Nearby City, New Jersey" You could also talk about how you are members of the greater Newark Chamber of Commerce or Newark Area Real Estate Lawyers who Lunch or how you support the Nearby Town Little League.

  • My honest advice? Use the traffic esti, ator only as a guideline. Google KW tool is FUBAR in many instances - for example, one search term it promises 10,000 searches a month, which I rank 1 for, only gets a portion of that if I look at the impressions i webmaster tools (another stupid tool) and only a fraction of the traffic you would expect, nowhere near if the data was correct.

  • Hi Neil, Your URL structure is affecting Google News. There is information here about the URL structure requirements, which can be waived if you use a Google News sitemap. http://www.google.com/support/news_pub/bin/answer.py?answer=151309. I don't know of any way to see the number of pages indexed historically, unfortunately.

  • If you have the money spare - which it sounds like you don't - I would get a BOTW link, but only if the category you are interested in is indexed. I've bought Yahoo directory links too in the past but to be honest I wouldnt recommend either to someone on a limited budget. Of course, "limited" is a relative term. These links cost a few hundred bucks each - enough to get 20-40 good quality unique articles written and used for better purposes..

  • I think because that section is labeled "crawl errors", an area blocked from crawling would be considered an error. I can see where you're coming from, but think of it as an error found with an attempt to crawl, not necessarily an error found in the site itself.

  • The change is no problem, unless you have links to those pages. Then I would just make your CMS keep the url structure. (Create a sanbox and send the job to someone on elance) If you change url structure: Create an index sitemap file. Then create a sitemap for the old site and the new site. If the urls are different in any way this is very good to do. Then submit the sitemap in webmaster tools and it should show two. Then google will crawl both pages faster and see the redirects and get your new URLs updated fast.

  • Million dollar question. However, I've found (quite unsurprisingly) that text-based content is at the bottom of the pile. Imagery and videos are the best way to get people linking and talking about you. Create or embed interesting/funny/shocking video and imagery to attract links and follow it up with content for the SEs to read and appreciate! Nick

  • If you're looking for truly apache mod_rewrite stories I cannot help, but I have implemented site-wide redirect schemes so that (for example) all URL's are put into Title Case, all folders are redirected to ensure trailing slash, and much more. It made a big difference and is highly recommended. Our duplicate content (that google wasnt even reporting but that we saw with tools like the IIS SEO toolkit http://www.iis.net/download/seotoolkit) dropped to zero and shortly afterwards our traffic increased as a result of increased keyword ranking almost across the board. Too many people ignore this.

  • Do you know what kinds of keywords are leading to less organic traffic?  Are they keywords for your brand name or down in the Long Tail? My guess is that your organic traffic is, in fact, going down, but not because your rank is going down.  Rather, it's because of multi-touch attribution.  If you're advertising less (esp. less in the Long Tail), then you'll receive less organic traffic for keyword searches involving your brand name. This is because a new visitor will often vist your site more than once - the first time, they'll use a PPC click and the second time, they'lls earch on your brand name (because now they know it from the earlier PPC visit).  But if you reduce your PPC spend, then you can't get as much multi-session traffic.  Make sense? There's a clear relationship here.  See this presentation on Slideshare for an example of how my company tested this relationship in a few different ways.  You'll see the kinds of results we ot and then can formulate your own tests.

  • It happens, and I wouldn't say it's "bad" as such if it's done in the right way. Twitter is quite big on Follow Spam and I believe there are limits as to the number of new follows an account can carry out in a day. Think of it as a value proposition you're making to someone -- you're approaching them and saying, "I see you follow company A. I'm suggesting you also follow company B." What value do they immediately see when they quickly view your profile, your stats, and most importantly the content you've been sharing? If you've got a tweet stream with a good amount of well-presented, varied content most of which isn't self-serving or promotional, you stand a better chance of getting the Follow back. I guess it boils down to the idea of spending time creating your prescence and voice before going all-out on increasing the audience by any means necessary.
