  • Gooddata and Tableausoftware look interesting, thanks for sending those along. Essentially we are creating an online dashboard for clients to be able to access their data in quick and aesthetically please way. I will read more into those two and see if they would be able to handle what we are looking for for one of our new applications we are working on. Thanks for sharing the article from Will as well, it was pretty cool, I somehow managed to miss it a year ago! I actually like the visualizations in the Campaign manager for pro members, I like the clean design and the simplicity in the nofollow vs follow, and the URL's entered via search term graphs. Looking forward to seeing more data visualized in the future, pictures make people happy Thanks for your quick response!

  • Thanks, Keri. Great pointers. I didn't know Google had been doing 'title altering' for 6 months. Looks like they're using internal link anchor text to substitute new titles if they are related to the query. I don't really like them changing my carefully crafted titles but it's also true that I don't know if their change is helping or hurting my CTR in the SERPs. Hmmmm...

  • Hi Robert, Basically when you load your website, all the content that shows without scrolling down is called "Above the fold", Hence the term Below the fold, means all the content that will appear when you scroll down to see the rest of your site. take a look at this article (http://andrewhansen.name/affiliate-marketing/google-checkmates-me-but-reveals-internal-secrets/) it shows that Google have the ability to know what is above or below the fold and can calculate the ratio of content / Ads. And Concerning Ehow, Josh Hannah (Former Owner of Ehow) gave his 2 cents of why EHow didn't get hit with the Panda Update. (http://www.quora.com/Why-doesnt-Google-push-down-low-quality-results-from-sites-such-as-eHow-the-same-way-it-pushes-up-results-from-Wikipedia/answer/Josh-Hannah)

  • Hallo Bernd, Of course, I agree with everyone else that you need to fix your robots.txt file. However I'd also add the suggestion that you setup Google Webmaster Tools for your site. These will help inform you about crawl errors and your robots.txt file and might be helpful for you in future. Also whilst having a quick look at your site I noticed some duplicate page title issues. Make sure you are tracking your site with SEOmoz's campaign tool. It will really help you find these types of issues. Viel Glück!

  • I don't know if your CMS allows this (which I doubt and why I don't like most of them), but if you can inject your own code into the header, you can test the product page against the database, and if false, do a header redirect to the brand page while including a 301. The question I have is, from what is your Title tag generated? It sounds like the linking text, which is odd. I would think if anything it is either pulled from a database or from a URL parameter.

  • Hi there, Tom provided a great bulleted list, however the title of your video is probably one of the most important elements  - not just for indexing but to attract the right viewers. You can see a great summary of video optimization here: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/video-seo-basics-whiteboard-friday-11080 Another opportunity is to use video sitemaps. Video sitemaps are similar to regular sitemaps - they provide Google with more information about your videos. It tells Google exactly where and what the video content is on your site and will help it get picked up.You can add duration, and incorporate keywords in the title and descriptions. Compatible video types include: .mpg, .mpeg, .mp4, .mov, .wmv, .asf, .avi, .ra, .ram, .rm, .flv and need to be directly available via HTTP (which means no streaming media). Reel SEO has a great overview Google Video Sitemaps - How to Create a Google Video Site map You can also review more at Webmaster Central: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=80472 I absolutely recommend video sitemaps, especially if you have many on your site. It's really a great way to increase visibility. Good luck!

  • Sounds like you need to sort out a canonical URL issue. In your .htaccess file, redirect /index.html to www.example.com. It's easy to 301 it but you may also have non-www and www issues. If you're not sure what I'm talking about, check out that link above and it might make it all clear. This should stop the XML sitemap generating the two pages.

  • Google can read text in PDFs. However there is a huge amount of information useful for SEO that can't be added to a PDF. I would convert all PDFs to HTML and then 301 the PDFs to the new HTML content. It's incredibly worth while doing.

  • Right, but my question is more if you have 1000 pages, and don't make a change to page 900, does that affect the SEO of that 1 page only, or potentially the top pages such as home page etc

  • I don't know on that. This is an older question -- you might try asking this as a separate new question, where more people will see it.
