  • Hey Atul, I would recommend starting from the end and working backwards, i.e. what it is that you are trying to accomplish, e.g. your goal(s), and then work backwards from that to create your strategy and then get to the beginning of it all, e.g. your tactics. Don't forget  that the "me" is very directional, and pertains to the web property that it is found on vs. any specific content on the page or other site that page or web property is linking to. If I am understanding your question correctly, I don't think the example you gave above would achieve what it is that you are trying to accomplish, as well as other possible optimization tactics out there that you could employ. Hope this helps! Sorry if it wasn't the answer you were looking for. Christian

  • A different Matt but I have to/still agree that you need to password protect the site. This isn't just for a protection against crawlers but also anyone else who might be snooping around. Unless your client is okay with their work being released early into the wild you should password protect it. The good news is that many hosting companies have tools that will automagically generate the .htaccess files for your.

  • The on page analysis is showing you this URL as it is the one that you are currently ranking 37th for. The Grade applied to this page is determined by many on page elements that can be better optimised to improve your Grade - and in doing so the likelyhood of improving your rankings as a result. With regard to better optimising your page to best match your keyword - I would suggest that you first (and foremost) look at focusing on first selecting a small number of potential keyword variations that are the most relevant to your niche, your content and your customer - make sure they are targeted keyword/s rather than a very broad keyword/s (especially if the broad keyword is one that is highly competitive.) Then I would take my shortlist of keywords and do some keyword research using something like Google's Keyword Tool or similar and examine the popularity of these keyword phrases (I would also consider selecting phrase and exact matches for these keywords) to best determine the most popular variations based on the number of monthly searches. Try and build a URL structure that matches this keyword too - for example www.mydomain.com/villas-in-florida/ (If this proves to be a different keyword to the one you are currently using and you want to change the URL structure, page title etc and some of the copy on page you should create a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new.)

  • It seems like these pages were gaining links for you so I would suggest recreating them to the best of your ability. Hopefully it will be high enough quality content again that people will continue to link to it. A 301 is great too but content that relates to something may not be what people will link to in the first place. Either way it sounds like you know what you are doing SEO wise, but now just think what would be better for the reader. Perhaps 301 them all now and create the pages as you have time? Good luck.

  • I'd certainly agree with that, Dunamis. I don't ask for links, and I don't respond well when asked for one, unless I have a relationship with the person. I have even been asked for one by someone I knew, and tried to explain nicely that an OBL from an SEO site to a real estate site didn't really make much sense for either of us. My advice, Rhys, would be to focus first on establishing a relationship. If the resulting relationship is solid, and both sites are relevant, a simple mention of your need to acquire more natural links may well spawn an offer.

  • EGOL has pretty much summed it up! I know when I first came here, I was a little overwhelmed as well.  What I found worked best for me was to just keep reading.  It's amazing how much stuff goes into your brain and stays there!  LOL! But I'll emphasize again that the SEOmoz Beginner's Guide that EGOL mentioned is really really good. One other thing that I'll add is: "Don't be afraid to make mistakes".   I get guilty of not wanting to implement anything for fear of it not being perfect.  But really, anything can be modified.  So, start implementing stuff on your website and see what works.  And if you're not sure then ask a question in here.

  • Submiteaze may include at least some quality directories.  Personally, I've never seen a niche- market high quality directory that allows anything other than direct submission though.

  • Unfortunately you can't change crawl settings for Google in a robots.txt file, they just ignore it. The best way to rate limit them is using custom Crawl settings in Google Webmaster Tools. (look under Site configuration > Settings) You also might want to consider using your loadbalancer to direct Google (and other search engines) to a "condomised" group of servers (app, db, cache, search) thereby ensuring your users arent inadvertantly hit by perfomance issues caused by over zealous bot crawling.

  • I think that the first question that anyone who wants to hire a linkbuilder should do is ask himself is... "Do I have any content on  my site that is worth linking to?"   If the answer to that question is "no" or "maybe" then you will need to find a linkbuilder who is either a freeking magician or a linkbuilder who will only get you links from spammy sites. From dignan99:  I personally do not trust the links done by the vast majority of services that offer link building. I agree.  If I needed a linkbuilder, I would hire someone to sit in my office and do it.  Then I could control the process and know that when they found good links that they would not be duplicated for my competitor's sites.     That's how you start an arms race! If you have received some of the link requests that I get you would know that ignorant linkbuilders will make a fool out of you in front of other people in your industry.  Worse... turn an idiot lose and tell him to drop comments on forums and blogs with your name on them.  That can really damage the image of your business in the right places. Getting to your question... I would ask where they are going to look for these links and I would want to see periodic reports of where the links are located so I can will know when to fire the linkbuilder for stinking up my domain by posting crap on other websites.
