International Site, flow of page rank?
Why are you doing a 301 redirect instead of just using a link that takes someone directly to the US/UK/AU versions of the site? You see lots of sites doing this at the top of their site with a flag corresponding to the country, etc. Anyway, is the text on the other sites unique or exact copies of the international? If so you could be causing more harm then good. Ideally you want actual top levle domains, like www.site.co.uk and www.site.com, etc. Then the text on each TLD should still be somewhat different based on the keywords and differences in language those people use. You are correct though that your international version will rank better with the set up you have now, despite your folder set up.

Are these links on timeout.com passing any value?
Not sure whether they pass value or not, but a likely reason to do this is to keep track of click-outs. By passing the links through the internal system they can view what links are clicked and how many times.

What is the most likely reason we aren't ranking #1 for our keyword.
I really don't think that the answer is in these numbers... I would simply... -- improve content -- sharpen the optimization -- get more backlinks -- make social sharing easy

Internal linking to subdomains
It's true that subdomains are not internal links. But if they are your subdomains they are trusted links. When you place a link, your PR from that page will automatically flow to it. The only question you have to answer is, now that the link juice has been spent, do you want the link's target to benefit from the link and let your PR to flow to the page? Can you share a context of where or why you think it would be beneficial to use nofollow on a link to one of your subdomains?

What to do with a new good looking site?
Your very welcome ennovation. And yes you do have a tendency to stare yourself blind on a design one did oneself, I know that all to well Just a final thought, since your also targeting an elder audience you should bare in mind that old peops have a nasty tendency to have old mashines with outdated browsers, so you should make sure that your final version supports IE6. Best of luck

Local Seo Help!
Hi, personally I wouldn't delete the Places page. It does look a little over cooked which might be why the description is being deleted. Try to objectively look at the copy of the description - is it factual or full of keywords? You may need to rewrite it. There are people out there who can help you - have you tried http://getlisted.org/resources/trustedproviders.aspx ? Not sure what to do about the sitebuilder. If the relationship is OK, you could ask for them to request the page is removed from the directory via their webmaster tools. Good luck

Setting a 404, best practices
If for any reason a web page is not found your web server will return a 404 http header code. Wikipedia offers a very readable status code list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_HTTP_status_codes The challenge you are facing is Google does not automatically de-index a link due to receiving a 404 error. At times Google might crawl a site and there can be an issue where a page is not available, or even your whole site. In my opinion the best way to handle that is for Google to wait until they have received a 404 response a few times, then remove the page. Make sure your page is not blocked by robots.txt or else Google will never be able to see the page and know it is 404'd.

Is 404'ing a page enough to remove it from Google's index?
Nice information John. I hadn't thought of adding a temporary page with a noindex tag but that sounds like a way to go for faster results. I know Google has automatically removed 404 pages in the past. I noticed the issue Michelle is sharing and the information you shared offers great details on the process.
