  • Hi BeytzNet.  It would help to know what scale of e-commerce you are curious about? I think the online retail industry needs some new terms. The brick-n-mortar retail industry has a nice collection of easily understood terms. We all know the difference between a big box store, a mom-n-pop shop, a franchise, a boutique, a chain store, a convenience store, and a resale shop. But online retail seems to just have "e-commerce sites". An online store with 50,000 products is a whole different beast than an online store with 50 products (or at least it should be) - and they should have different names. Maybe Mega-e-commerce for the 50,000 item store, and Micro-e-commerce for the 50 item store. Then we could fill the gaps with Mini-e-commerce for the 500 item stores and Middle-e-commerce for the 5000 item guys. And boy is it hard to find good e-commerce systems for the 50 item stores. Something like Magneto or BigCommerce is overkill. But systems that are friendly to Micro and Mini-e-commerce are out there if you dig deep enough.

  • Thank you for some great information!  I am reading it over now! The concern is not necessarily the page rank or da of the actual sites with the content linking to the other site, but that google might reduce or diminish the link juice of the actual links since they would likely detected as originating from the same server. It might be 5-10 websites, original content...but not really something we can "test and see" Thank you again!

  • To be honest Moz and even Raven and the others to a certian degree are only going to give you one level of KW data. If you are really keen on Keyword Research and want to do it right their are custom tools on the market to do just that an example of this is http://keywordsnatcher.com/ That been said MOZ tool set has the Keyword difficulty section http://moz.com/tools/keyword-difficulty which I guess is kind of what you need. Really the question is HOW DEEP do you want to do keyword Research?

  • Hey Andrew, I tried using www.thesitevalue.com and every url errors out at the last step, resulting in a site value of $8.95. I've noticed this on various sites, including sites I know have way more value than their domain alone Have you experienced this? Do you use any other tools?

  • Hey Tony, Thanks for following up like this. I think Asian Travel Tips is a much better, more brandable, domain than the other ones you have listed. Google may tell you that you don't have a "manual action" while you may have an algorithmic one. The people on the team you contacted (at the time it was called Google Webmaster Tools, but whatever they're calling it this week) probably have no way of knowing whether your site has an algorithmic penalty, or is being given lower rankings algorithmically. Generally speaking, fewer domains is better than lots of more niche microsites if they're all part of the same theme - in this case travel to Asia. Here is a post about this concept: https://moz.com/blog/2-become-1-merging-two-domains-made-us-an-seo-killing Here's what Rand has to say about it: https://moz.com/blog/rebrand-or-redirect-my-site-consolidate-multiple-sites-whiteboard-friday I had a look at the screenshot you sent and the site looks good. Keep posting unique, useful content about traveling throughout Asia and you should be fine. I like that you're leveraging the Trip Adviser connection, as it adds trust for the user. Good luck!

  • Hi, Abe, thanks for recommending the work around. I am just adding over 300 KWs in batches by 20. However it seems there is another issue  - the list of keywords shows first 100 keywords only even though there is already 330 keywords on the list. In other words, I have copied and pasted 330 KWs (in batches by 20). So it says " 20 of 350 keywords available for all campaigns." but according to the keyword list there is 100 KWs only. I am new to MOZ and to be honest quite confused so far. Thanks for your help.

  • Google's advice on this is a bit vague, and the practical consequences can vary a lot. Linking together a couple of sites is usually fine - linking together dozens or hundreds could get you marked as a link network and get all of your sites penalized. Usually, as Richard and James said, it's more that Google will simply devalue the links, especially if those sites share ownership/hosting/etc. It's just too easy to cross-link your own properties. I don't think getting too fancy with hosting, C-blocks, etc. is the answer. That's a lot of work, and Google can still connect you on ownership and other cues. To erase all of those cues is a lot more time, effort, and money than links from a couple of sites are really worth. The best advice I can give is that, if you cross-link, do it in a way that's clearly of value to users. In other words, just linking these sites to each other in the footer is almost going to guarantee that Google ignores those links. If, however, you can link specific content to directly relevant content on another site, they're much more likely to let those links carry equity, and that's going to be valuable for your visitors and let them usefully traverse your sites. So, think of it more as a CRO task - how can you get visitors from one site to meaningfully engage in and convey on your other sites? If you can do that, and if you're only talking a handful of sites, you have some chance at making those links carry value.

  • In theory, this shouldn't be a problem. When you use an image on a page, you are embedding that image from somewhere else - it's own URL. Therefore, if the page itself is "noindex, follow" - that does not apply to the images (or anything else like a video, pdf etc) that is embedded into the page.  Provided that the URL holding the image is allowed to be indexed on your root domain, which it will by default, you can index the image. You can test this out by uploading images to your root domain and then, in the next few days, performing this site search: site:yoursite.com filetype:jpg (or png/gif/whatever you used) That will show any of the images that you have on the site that are in the Google index.  If that does not work, try this search: site:yoursite.com inurl:imagefilename Replace those details with your real site and what you named the image when uploading and it should show you whether or not it's indexed or not.  If not, you could try sharing the image on Google+. G+ is ridiculously effective at getting web pages and content indexed. But just because the page where the image is present on is instructed to be noindexed does not mean that the image itself will inherit that quality.  By default, it should be indexed properly.  You can also create image sitemaps to help with indexing (I believe you're running Wordpress, Yoast's SEO wordpress plugin can help with this). Hope this helps.

  • I've tested this a couple of times and each result has been: no. If you 410 a page, Google does a bloody good job at never bringing that URL back.  I've changed the response code back from a number of 410s, socially shared the page, built natural links to it, even blasted links to it (for testing's sake of course!) and Google has never reindexed it. It's both good and bad - good in the sense that it really uses the 410 response code properly, but bad in the sense that, if you make a mistake and want to reuse the URL, you're pretty screwed. If you're going to use it, be absolutely 100% you wouldn't see any use in using that URL again (such as offering the product again in the future etc.).  If there is any doubt, leave it as a 404 or redirect it.
