Do random listings effect Google Local Rankings?
Hi Jonathan, While this should not be affecting you locally, yes, there is some chance that this could be affecting organic results if these searches for this person are popular. So, on a local front, no don't worry about this. On an organic front, this is one of those weird things where there are similarities or even synonyms from which Google is drawing incorrect intent.

Meta Tags for Images in Multiple Galleries
If you can keep it under 15 words, i'd stick with 1 alt text for all instances - throwback MC video. So in your case, "Old Navy commercial display, faux white brick panel accent wall" would be acceptable. I think it would strengthen the keyword relevancy for the image rather than using different alt text on different pages. This gives me an idea for a test though... time to throw up a web page

Should I delete youtube videos when moving to Wistia (or other on-site platform)?
Second Phil on this one: "You can find that YouTube will outrank your pages, which splits your traffic and view count, thereby damaging your SEO" This is the major issue here.

Text to HTML Important ?
That probably means they just have less html code, since it's a ratio (text/code). Text to code ratio has no impact on SEO, and I'm surprised some SEOs still obsess over it. If you have an incredibly code heavy page, Google may have trouble crawling it, but that's more about the sheer amount of code vs any kind of ratio. That being said, you should try to keep your html code to a minimum, as excess code will increase the file size of your page, leading to a longer load time which is a poor user experience and can have a negative impact on rankings.

Site videos and rich snippets - where to place video
The video is still behind Javascript there, which could prevent the content from being indexed. It's hard for me to say one way or the other without testing, but my gut instinct is to say you'll still struggle to get the videos indexed. Google can execute some JavaScript, but from tests i've done it's not super consistent. Also - don't use YouTube to host those videos - it's not a wise move (more details here: http://moz.com/blog/building-a-video-seo-strategy), especially since you're allowing others to advertise on your videos.

CDN image links passing SEO benefit?
Hey Chris, If your domain is onedirection.net and people are linking to your images on cdn.onedirection.net you are seeing some benefit, just not as much as if they were on onedirection.net root domain. If that's the case that's why they are coming up in your Just Discovered links. If however cdn.onedirection.net is your CDN completely irrespective of your domain and your site is on another domain like justinbieber.com then nope you won't get any link equity from that. -Mike

Should YouTube videos be added too our sitemap
You don't need to include them no, and You can't include a sitemap entry for a YouTube video page anyway, only individual pages on your own site. You can choose to include embedded your YouTube videos in your video sitemap if you wish - (Tutorial for you here: https://www.distilled.net/blog/video/creating-video-sitemaps-for-each-video-hosting-platform/) But this isn't the best strategy to take if you're trying to get rich snippets (see here: http://moz.com/blog/building-a-video-seo-strategy) I hope that's useful!

Google+ Local ranking for company with no website
Hi Antony, I have Seen Profiles rankings on Google Locals but in very small locations. And I have also seen Google local listing Ranking with Free domains like wordpress etc. That provide you a free sub-domains. I will recommend you to have a Website because Competition is getting higher and higher So if you have a Website then You can manage onpage optimization stuff very well. And In-case you donot want to have a website then You should Go with option 2 above. Having sub-domain on any free hosting website. Thanks

Question For Those Who Record Their Own Videos
I use a 5D Mk III, three Arri 750 lights and Sennheiser MKE Lav mics for the DistilledLive videos - EXAMPLE For talking head videos, I don't think there is a massive difference between using a good lav vs using a boom microphone - you can get great quality from both. Similarly, the difference between a DSLR and a good camcorder is relatively marginal as well for simple recordings. The things that really make a difference are firstly understand how to set up your lights, and secondly having some post production skills. Lighting will be the major factor in determining the quality of your image and you need to find a way to effectively remove shadow while keeping a natural skin tone on your subject. Once you've mastered the lighting, you need to understand basic colour correction and grading - as well as how to mix and master audio tracks. For vocals, you want to cut quite heavily any superfluous frequencies at the top and bottom end that just pick up noise, as well as adding compression and a bit of reverb to bring some life to the sound.

For Local SEO on a business with many locations, should the city be included in the business name?
Hey Brian, This is something I've been mulling over for the better part of two years. I am assuming you've made a decision on this already, and I was curious to see what you ended up doing? We currently have 10 franchises, and continue to grow. We will have four offices in the Seattle MSP (currently all in different suburbs). I have always been concerned about how it would work with two offices in the city, but I felt being able to use an exact NAP for each office individually was important. After reading Dana's response, I'm now inclined to use the non-localized names for all offices. Which way did you go, and how is that working out for you? Any other advice or lessons learned along the way? Cheers, Logan

What are the best practices for optimizing a site for multiple locations?
Hi Mandy, The second part of Keri's question is important. To create a strategy, you must first answer these questions: Does the client meet face-to-face with customers or is business done virtually? Does the client have a physical office/s in cities within the states you are mentioning? Do customers come to these offices or do employees leave from these offices to serve customers at their places of business? Your opportunities for promotion are based on the business model (physical vs. virtual). Please provide as much detail as you can so that you will receive the best possible answer from the community.

Checking in on Local
Hi Jonathan, The best way to start looking for duplicates is to go to Google Maps and type in current phone numbers and any past phone numbers to see if more than one listing surfaces for them. It sounds like you are making major right steps in many areas. Bringing us back to the concept that these things take time. Once all potential negatives can be resolved, then there is only going forward with positives including content development, review acquisition, social outreach, link earning, etc. Your original thread from October dates the start of your cleanup to about 2 months ago. While everything is dependent on the competitiveness of a business' local market, you should begin to see positive outcomes at some point, but when that will be can't really be estimated. So basically, your path to success will look like this: Resolve negatives Build on-going postives See results once Google catches onto the fact that there are no negatives and that a positive effort is being made on an on-going basis that is superior to the efforts of local competitors. Pretty much all Local SEO campaigns follow this general pattern and, from your description of your efforts, it sounds like you are on the right track and just need to give things time. *I will make one proviso to this. Let's say 6 months go by and you are still not seeing the client become a chief player in the results for their local market. If this was happening to me, I'd try to find someone more expert than myself to audit the site in case I've overlooked something I'm not trained to spot. Hope this helps, and good luck!

Google + local Multiple Locations
Hi AllieMC, how did it work out for you? We are in a similar situation and looking to create a google+ local page for each location. Haven't decided how we are going to link them on our website but we have a dedicated landing page for each location that will definitely have the corresponding/appropriate Google+ local link.
