Feedburner email service
Something else to be aware of - the process of importing your current subscribers is VERY iffy. In fact I've never found anyone - or reports of anyone - who actually accomplished it successfully. There are anecdotal reports online that you can send Feedburner (Google) a CSV file of your subscribers to have manually added to your Feedburner account, but nobody's actually reported accomplishing this. You likely already know how Google is with custom support for their free products - I sure wouldn't count on being able to make this happen. If you've already got the subscribers in an ESP, use a template that will run off an RSS feed and automate it that way as Rojish recommends. You'll need the full ESP (email service provider) functionality to market to them effectively to turn at least some of them into customers. If you don't care about turning them into customers of some sort, you could just require them all to resubscribe through Feedburner and not worry about the large percentage that would drop off your list as a result. (But then, why build up the list if not to try to get some business advantage from it?)

Easy way to get some do-follow links for a new site
To answer your question: There are lots of tools that can automate this, but that's a good way to get your new site sandboxed. Don't mess with these unless you really know what you're doing. If this site is a long-term investment for you, then you need to get your blog up and running. It will take a while to see results, but this is generally the core link-building engine of any organization. Establish a budget and get good writers. The links will [slowly] come. Some of the more innocuous link-building methods that you can actively pursue are social media (pinterest & squidoo especially), newsworthy press-releases, social bookmarking, niche blog commenting, niche & high PR directories (both free & paid), and guest blogging / article directories. However, most of these things are dependent on content. The more content that you have (and the better that it is), the easier it becomes to build links. Creating special offers can also work out well if you can get on various "employee discount" pages from reputable sites. If you have a brick-and-mortar business, local citations will also help to get you going. I hope this helps.

Google authorship program-sometimes it works..and sometimes ...
What you are likely experiencing is the effects of personalized search results. That is, results when you are signed into Google (hence the differing results on different computers). First you need to check that you have correctly implemented the authorship markup here: http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets Remember, there is no guarantee that a rich snippet will be shown in search results. If you need help implementing the markup then there are several guides you can find through Google. Hope this helps, Adam.

How do you know if you have been penalized by search engines?
Penalties can happen for a lot of reasons these days. One of the quickest ways is to see if you can associate a specific, clear drop in organic site visits with a known date of one of Google's many publicized updates. (either a drop on an exact same day as an update or within a day or two after). Examples of clearly identifiable drops related to specific Google updates can be seen here: http://twitpic.com/9bfx2s http://twitpic.com/8pjere http://searchmarketingwisdom.com/wp-content/uploads/GoogleSurvivorTipsSlide3.png You can compare your own analytics with the known dates tracked here on SEOmoz However if your site was penalized due to a "cascading" effect, that could be more difficult to pin down. For example, if your site suffers from a combination of "red flag" issues, it could be that you were on the verge of penalization for quite some time, and only an accumulation experience triggered it. (the last straw to break the rankings). Another consideration is if you have seen a big drop recently, you could very well bounce back in short order if it was just an accumulation of "perfect storm" factors (including changes Google made that they then shortly thereafter "fix", for example).

TED talks
For a very basic overview these 'in plain English' videos are a good start (but a little dated now): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpIOClX1jPE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddO9idmax0o&feature=plcp http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NN2I1pWXjXI&feature=plcp Getting more advanced you could point them in the direction of the FB for business page: http://www.facebook.com/business which contains videos, guides and success stories.

What are the top 3 things you evaluate when contracted to SEO a website?
Keyword Research - Making Sure the right keywords are being targeted. Identification of Top10/50/100 Keywords, Current Rankings, Competition Identification, Analysis and Comparison. Site Index-ability, Keyword Targeting, Content Quality & any architecture level issues. Domain Link Profile, Strength, Social & other business initiativesand assets that can drive domain authority. Dividing the above 3 points into On-Page (1st 2 Items) and (3rd Item) I hope this helps.

Would like to test other words besides "subscribe"
Hi Streetwise, I've never actually A/B'd a subscription mechanism like the one you're talking about, but I definitely agree that people are NUMB to the word "Subscribe" and that setting yourself apart a little bit would help. One of the thing's I really appreciate about SEOMoz is the inventiveness and originality they employ in converting visitors to customers... worked on me From greeting me with a nice warm "Aloha" to having Roger personally tell me I've reached a 404 pages, it's that kind of personal customer engagement that seems to be leading to more conversions these days. I'm not sure what your niche is but a few suggestions to replace "Subscribe Now". Stay Informed. Keep me Informed. Update me. Keep me in the loop. I think even eliminating "now" could help, and having the button simply say "Subscribe" Last one... Hop on the Bus, Gus. Kidding... but you get the point. Be different. Take a browse through seomoz.org and you'll see plenty of examples. (Might want to log out first to get the full effect.) Hope this helps. Thanks, Anthony

Site search
how about a CMS that has built-in search functionality. some CMS' even go further and provide separate SOLR searching plus indexing and not just a pure database based one (faceted search etc.). My choice DRUPAL!

How to advertise "tip of the day"
Email is really the only way to deliver to them. RSS will work, but they need to know how to receive RSS feeds in their email program. I would investigate Social, Twitter, Facebook.

How to search adwords properly
A couple of things to keep in mind that no everyone who searches on a word (especially a broad single-word query) will actually click a result. They may look at the result and realize that they need to narrow it down, and not click on anything. It's really hard to tell search intent from a one-word query like gold. Is it a fifth grader who is searching for a classroom assignment about gold? Is someone wanting to know about gold so they can buy gold jewelry? Do they want to know the current price of gold? Are they interested in investing in gold?

Extracting contact info from a website
I don't recall the article off-hand, but we did recently have a post with a good argument against scraping contact info in advance. If you look at the third point at http://www.seomoz.org/ugc/5-pro-link-building-tips-to-improve-scalability you'll see why the author argues for getting the contact info right when you do the outreach. As the owner of a niche site for an RC hobby, I get a lot of unsolicited emails regarding SEO services and selling of products where it's obvious that the sender has just harvested my email and has not really looked at my site. Trust me, you'll go a lot further if you actually look at the site and hand-gather the info.
