I think that depends on the sector you're in. There are specialist PR companies per sector who will most likely do a better job for you than a general PR company.

So I think the title of my question says it all really. I've written an article which is now 3k words.

Should I :

a.) publish as one article and reap the benefits of a very authoritative page on the subject, social shares, etc, but secondary keywords will be formatted as sub-headings (H2 tags) within the article.

or,

b.) break article down into 3 logical steps, resulting in 4 pages (intro, part 1, part 2, part 3) and reap the benefits of 3 highly optimized pages where secondary keywords become primary keywords (URL, Meta Title, H1, etc)

Thoughts welcome?

I guess it would help to randomise the featured products and the customer reviews, but I honestly think your biggest problem is this repeated block of text under the featured products where you're dynamically swapping out one or two words with your keyword, for example:

I like the idea of anchoring links down to specific OE number sections using the H2 headings, my concern is what content would these sections contain?

You mention a brief description and history. The problem is there's nothing different about the product so the description/history would be exactly the same as the main product number. These number are literally alternative numbers for EXACTLY the same product.

Client did have option 1 set up and working when I came onboard and they did rank well for these OE numbers which brought in visitors/business. These pages had nothing more than a H1 Heading and one line of text on these pages containing OE number. I advised client to 301 these into main product page which also listed these OE number as alternate numbers.

In the short term I suspect this move will lose them visitors, until we build strength into main product page and in the long term protect their domain from a Panda penalty for thin content.

What's the best way to optimise pages for OE / Manufacturer Part numbers?

Disclaimer: All part numbers in this post are fictional. I dont want this post out ranking my client for real part numbers

Take this for Throttle Body for example:

WOODYS S-AB-Q.123.53G

This is the main part number from WOODYS (the manufacturer).

However, these are all variations of exactly the same product:

• Woodys 2.78972.11.0
• Woodys 2.78972.16.0
• Woodys 2.78972.20.0
• Woodys 2.78972.26.0

Oh, and car brands use OE numbers for these parts, such as:

• VWA 9808e40923G

• VWA 9808e40923L

• VWA 9808e40923M

• VWA 9808e40923P

• VWA 9808e40923Q

  These internal part numbers are vitally important as most of my clients customers are garages/mechanics so they're very likely to search on OE numbers.

So, would you suggest:

1. Optimising 10 different pages for the same product (using the part numbers in the URL, Title and H1). The problem is there's no unique content for these pages, only the part number varies, so this would likely get penalised for dupe content, or not enough unique content.

2. Optimising one page for all terms. If so, how do you suggest doing this to ensure all part/OE numbers rank well and part numbers are prominent in the SERPS?
   Could Schema.org help here by marking up these EO numbers with the isSimilarTo property of the Product type? I'm trying to ensure these part number get equal presence in the SERP snippet when searched for, even though I can't physically include all these numbers in the Title tag, URL and H1 of one page.

3. Something else?

If I add canonical tag on the pages with duplicate content pages, can I remove the tag after I get the content issue fixed?  Will that have any negative effects to those pages that had the tag implemented?

No. I would advise doing this.

My other question is , in order to make the page content different on every sub category pages do you guys think I can randomize my product displays along with the text content.  Does the product display counted as part of the text content?

When you say randomize, what do you actually mean?

Displaying the same products in a random order would not count as unique content.

Yes the product display does count as part of the pages content.

I'm also not sure what you mean by randomizing text content, but it sounds like a bad idea as the whole idea is to create useful unique content to the product the page is related to, which is why I suggested targeting things like "urethane body kits" rather than Lexus urethane body kits as its more likely you can produce higher quality content on the former.

I think you have a bigger problem here.

The text at the bottom of every page is generated by template system dynamically replacing one variable only, thus resulting in very thin/dupe content. It's very probable that you've been hit with recent Google Panda updates.

As a quick fix, you could try adding canonical tag from these sub cats into your main cat page but as long as you have this dynamic dupe content you're going to have a real problem. Open to hear others thoughts on this though.

I would certainly test this on one sub/main category before implementing across the whole site.

I would try to build out useful unique content around each body kit type (Urethane Body Kits, Cheap body kits, etc). This will give you less main categories to find useful content for, then mention the car makes and models within the content, such as suitable for: Lexus, Saab, etc.

Whilst we all know that NAP (Name, Address and Phone Number) should be consistent in citation, if your business offers its services locally and internationally, I would include both local and international phone number on your website, then use relevant phone number from local/international citation.

I dont see this being a problem and have used this successfully in the past.

If you are worried, the alternative is to use local number consistently, and for international citations simply prefix number with [UK].

https://www.kissmetrics.com/ is also meant to be a great product if you have a high transactional site, i.e, lots of interactions with the visitor before and after they become a customer.

Perhaps not worth it for a simple blog style website.

It's also a tool which Avinash (Guru of Analytics) speaks highly of, so it must be pretty damn good!

I would say there's very very very little difference.

I have UK sites hosted on US servers and they perform extremely well in UK search engines.

Providing your website gives clear signals to Google that the site is targeted to Ireland (Currency in EUROs, Business Address, Links from business's in the local country) I'm sure you will rank just fine in Google.ie.

http://www.furnacefilterscanada.com/blog/ is not a sub-domain, its simply a subdirectory(folder) on the root domain. Therefore WordPress would need to be installed on current ecommerce host server.

if that's not possible your only option is to setup a sub-directory sub-domain (thanks for spotting typo Paul T) like http://blog.furnacefilterscanada.com/ then it's totally separate site which can be installed on a different server.

No you haven't. You have told the search engines that homepage is a canonical version of all these other URLs, which doesn't make sense and is most probably confusing the engines.

I would remove these asap.

Then take a closer look at the error craw diagnostic summary. Perhaps include a screenshot if you're still unsure.

The canonical tag is to tell search engines which version of the page to index if you have variations of the same page which could occur through querystring parameters or something simple like this:

• http://www.example.com/
• http://www.example.com/index.html

In this scenario you would simple add a this to the <HEAD> section of your index.html page to tell Google to only index http://www.example.com/ since index is exactly the same page.

Newspaper would add canonical tag to their head section of their article with the href pointing to your article on your domain.

If you can, publish your article before they publish theirs as google will know which version it indexed first. Ensure you ping the URL to google too, don't assume google will crawl it instantly.

Safest bet is to wait until your URL is indexed before newspaper publishes theirs.

Ask the newspaper to include the rel author tag in the article to tell google that you're the original owner of that article, see here for more on rel=author - http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2539557

Hey there, Lowercase is fine.

Not sure why you would have /nl-nl/ and /nl-en/ though, it's either English or Dutch, right?

I've set this up many times before and it works just fine, although it's sometimes a little overkill unless you have the English version of a page ranking higher than the Dutch version in Google.nl for example.

I usually find adding these as separate websites in WMT's and setting the target country correctly for each site you shouldn't have any problems.

So add http://www.domain.com/nl/ as its own site in WMT and set target country to Netherlands, then add http://www.domain.com/en/ as another site and set its target country to UK.
