Reviewing your client's backlink profile, I simply don't think the site has enough inbound links to trigger a Penguin hit. Sites that get hit by Penguin usually have very obvious patterns of link/anchor text manipulation, and I just don't see it. When it comes to Penguin-impacted sites, I usually see tens of thousands of inbound links coming from just a few hundred domains and an overcrowding of money keyword anchor texts. Looking over the anchor texts, I see very few money keywords (what Penguin typically goes after). I would be very surprised if this was a direct Penguin issue. Perhaps competitors that were previously held back by Penguin have recovered and are now ranking above you? I find that the Google penalty checker by Fruition.net is very useful for detecting whether a site was positively, negatively or directly impacted by a particular Google update.

Use a plugin to apply rich snippet markup to the individual product pages, adding another layer of "uniqueness" I had thought about this already and was looking into the MPN (Manufacturer Part Number) attribute for products (https://schema.org/mpn) however, it's not clear if, like SKU, the MPN needs to be unique to ProductModel (https://schema.org/ProductModel)? If that were the case, I'd have a problem as there are multiple MPN's per ProductModel. I see https://schema.org/isVariantOf too, which could be useful? Anyone with experience of Schema?

I publish long articles.  It works best for me. If the three articles that you are thinking about are tightly clustered in keyword space then one article is definitely the way to go.  However, if the three articles have a wide spread in keyword space, each with good volume, then three articles could perform better.... but in that case I would write nine short articles tightly clustered around three keywords and publish them as three long articles that go deep and wide around the central keyword.

Thanks Tom, I like the idea of anchoring links down to specific OE number sections using the H2 headings, my concern is what content would these sections contain? You mention a brief description and history. The problem is there's nothing different about the product so the description/history would be exactly the same as the main product number. These number are literally alternative numbers for EXACTLY the same product. Client did have option 1 set up and working when I came onboard and they did rank well for these OE numbers which brought in visitors/business. These pages had nothing more than a H1 Heading and one line of text on these pages containing OE number. I advised client to 301 these into main product page which also listed these OE number as alternate numbers. In the short term I suspect this move will lose them visitors, until we build strength into main product page and in the long term protect their domain from a Panda penalty for thin content. Would you agree?

Now would be a great time to do some blogger & site outreach. You can also use the exposure for a big social media push, and of course, a landing page featuring the designs would be great to drive ppc traffic if you use it. "As featured on" is your new favorite phrase for awhile, I guess.  Congrats to the client on the feature.

I discovered recently that you can control the blog page appearance in your profile settings, and view just snippets if you'd like for the SEOmoz and YOUmoz blog pages. I prefer the snippets myself. I haven't gone geeky and looked at how it's presented to the bots.
