Facebook ad to drive traffic to weight loss newsletter landing page - tips
I tried using women, using images related to weight loss like scales or tapes, but they all get denied saying that they don't want to support "idealized images" of women. The clicks come real slow because I don't have the right images. A picture of fruit does a little better. But $6 a click is not something I can really use well right now. I need better images to make it $2 a click. Any ideas?

Adwords: Great ideas on low hanging fruit for hypnosis center
The best research tools I know of are Spyfu.com, Wordstream.com, and Google's own Keyword Tool that you can find under the TOOLS tab in AdWords. There are probably favorites all around the industry but these are the few that I use.

Facebook Outreach Tips - what to say
Hi Keri, Yes, I figured that out. I only choose the people I can "follow" and message them telling them that I'm into weight loss too and see if they want to do a friend request. Once they're friends then I cultivate a relationship with them, tell them what I do, and do things like offer a free session. I'm still struggling a bit with keeping my integrity. I'm a very honest person and I don't want to mislead people. I'm going to do some facebook advertising too, but this question is about a free strategy.

Creative Opt-in Strategies for This Site
Hi Bob - Good question! Well, what is easy for one person is difficult for another. (And what is manageable on an iPhone may be impossible on another type of mobile device.) To know for sure what your specific audience prefers (and that's what it all boils down to), test, test, test! A/B testing tools like Optimizely can show you how users respond to design changes based on device and browser.

How would you suggest finding content topics for this site?
I was referring more about the content. You can write a great linkbait-worthy content about a new method to wax your car, but if you're selling diaper covers, it's not going to help you. Extreme example, but I'm trying to say to make sure that you write content that your target audience wants to read, not necessarily look just at content that will get links.

PPC strategies in a competitive ecommerce market
Hi BobGW, Wow, what a question to ask; it's fairly subjective and dependent on quite a few variables (like experience, life cycle of the campaign, ect), but that means we should get lots of answers! Here is my Top 5 contribution (in no particular order): Optimize Your Landing Page I like to optimize the bottlenecks first and that means making sure that my website and landing pages are ready to receive paid search traffic. Ask yourself these questions: does my website load as fast / faster than my competitors? Are the call to actions clear and on my landing pages? Is all the on-page SEO complete? Make it Easy to Purchase & Proper Ecommerce Tracking Make sure that your purchase funnel is simple and easy. Only capture the necessary information (save the extra for follow up emails and visits) and reduce any unnecessary steps in the checkout process. Have thorough and accurate Google Analytics Ecommerce tracking integrated (make sure to link your Adwords account to your GA profile as well). Develop an Efficient Adwords Account Architecture A proper account infrastructure highly impacts the success of a campaign. Take the time to brainstorm how it's best to lay out your company's campaigns and ad groups. Many times referring to the website's navigation (sitemap) can help develop this portion. Keyword Research & Maintenance Once you have your campaigns and ad groups decided, you can begin to fill them with keywords (often times keywords will help you identify new ad groups or campaigns needed too). Remember to keep the keywords focused and tightly grouped. Consistently set time aside to go through your keyword reports and matched search query reports in order to improve your keywords, add negative keywords, and identify new groups of keywords. Research, Experiment, Promote, & Improve Learn as much about Web Analytics as you can and how it applies to your Ecommerce strategy. Invest in the appropriate marketing tools for competitive research, SEO, and analytics. If you don't already love digging huge data, then you should get acquainted with it as quick as possible. Make sure to continually test new ads, ad copy, banners, ect. Find the higher performing ads and ditch the ones that are costing you money. Have campaigns ready to go for special occasions like Flash Sales, holidays, graduations, ect. Making sure to keep a disciplined routine with your PPC campaigns will have a high impact on their success. The consistent, incremental improvement is usually what contributes the most for long-term success. Bonus: Understand Your Customer Lifetime Value "Our competitors are buying PPC leads based on gathering long term customers that only have to get bought once and then they are repeat customers with no more cost." It sounds like your competitors have an understanding of the customer Lifetime Value of their customer's. In addition to Sales Revenue, as a metric for measuring success, they could be using the CLV of all the new customer's acquired. I would highly suggest an ecommerce company compute its CLV to most accurately understand its Customer Acquisition Cost, which will enable the marketer to do a better job in the PPC market.

Infographic as white hat linkable asset -> How do I do this right?
"Do I need to include all of their references and would that be duplicate content." Do not include large sections of content from the source, have the sources quoted at the bottom of the page as links. I would imagine you are putting your own spin on some of the information contained on those sites? You can make each one be its own line, and have a few links related to each section. Here is an example: http://moz.com/blog/illustrated-seo-competitive-analysis-workflow If you look at the bottom, she links out in a very organized fashion, so a user can find the source link they are looking for easier. You can also link out as you mention certain sites, or subjects. For better distribution, use a few less costly press relesases to judge how well the article will be received. Once you see it gaining traction, or the attachment rate with users, then I would possibly look at doing a larger PR. For your infographic, show a lower resolution version on your webpage, both for fast loading times, and also to have the full image downloadable as a file. This will allow you an extra URL where the image is hosted, and you will be able to track users that come to read and view the graphic, and also those that want to download what you display. This should give you some extra insight if the infographic is truly successful, and people find it useful. You could also add this as a destination URL goal in analytics.

Advice on Content Marketing in a Tough Niche
Jane, do you recommend that we do a brand new study like Aviva did? It seems like that would make for a much higher quality article. If so, what's the minimum sample size and are there companies you know of that we can hire to do the study? Thanks! Great ideas here.

What recommendations do you have for the SEO of this site?
Hey David,Nice analysis you did for nlpca.com. Can you help me out finding major issues with my site www.shoppal.in 2 Main things I need your suggestion for are: 1. Am I stuffing the keywords in individual pages like http://www.shoppal.in/zovi-coupons. Auto generated keyword "Coupon" is arriving several number of times on this page. Is it stuffing which can be taken as over optimization ? 2. Does you feel "rel=Canonical" should be maintained in individual pages. I am new to this and really need guidance. Regards

Link building - BBB, high quality associations and also botw.org
Thanks Jane, That makes everything except possibly the BBB not any good. Glad to know. That pretty much leaves us with content marketing. What's your opinion on the best online guides for developing content marketing in an industry where it's tough to find article niches, i.e. nobody links to the content in our niche. Thanks, I'll close this soon. Bob

Simple on-site SEO - bet practice for keywords in content
Try not just focusing on the exact keyword but also closely related keywords. If the article is well written and picks up good social traction , you might end up ranking for different closely related keywords, not just the main keyword.

Is there enough national traffic to go after for this niche
Hi Bob, There are a few others, the main one being Wordtracker (which comes with very good reviews). Wordtracker has a good reputation, but it's worth noting that some smaller tools do not have access to a large dataset to pull their numbers from, so you're not necessarily getting a true picture. Although Google's numbers are almost certainly a bit wonky (deliberately), at least you are getting them from the source and can have confidence in comparing volume. By that, I mean that if the tool says 10,000 people per month in the US search for [hypnosis] and 2,000 search for [hynotherapy] (these are totally made up numbers), then you can be somewhat confident that [hynotherapy] is 1/5th as popular as [hypnosis], even though you can't rely on the 10,000 / 2,000 figures. Cheers, Jane

Relevancy of backlinks for scholarship resource
Hi BobGW, I actually have experience in doing exactly this for one of my sites. I created a free academic archive - in the same niche as my site - as link bait. My results were mixed. I got quite a few new links coming back to the resource, and still do. The problem has been so far that the links are generally from low DA pages like blogs. There are exceptions as I did get a .mil and a few .edu links from it as well. Now, the traffic to the site definitely went up due to the new section as did social engagement. So, just for this it may be said that it was worth it. But despite all of this, I have not seen any major changes in SERP (up or down) in the last 6 months since this section was released. It just seems like the "link juice" is not transferring in any meaningful way despite a pretty simply site structure. I have also not seen any marked increase in conversions on the site. So, while Google does not seem to be punishing the site for this section, it also does not seem to be giving it credit for this either (even though it ranks well for its own keyword). In the end, it is as Andrew said, it depends on how much time and money this section will cost you. Based on the current success of this section on my site I would still say the 2 months to create it were worth it. I just hope that the SERP benefits will propagate to the rest of the site in the long term Good luck.
