I understand your approach, but would advise you to consider alternative methods. It provides you no benefit to rank #1 for a term unless people type that term into the search engine. According to Google that term has no traffic at all. If you rank #10 for a term which has 1000 monthly searches, as a result you may receive ?2% of those 1000 visitors so 20 visitors a month. Google Analytics allows you to see how much traffic you receive and the exact source of that traffic. Your report for this particular term will be skewed because of this Q&A thread. Try a similar but different phrase. If you earn #1 ranking but after 30 days see zero traffic, your article has absolutely no value despite it's #1 ranking.

I have added it to the index page of a client because they requested it (a competitor started first). A few people have clicked it, but not enough to really justify it yet. Basically its on a trial period for them. I could see it being more useful for blogs, if the content is good people will click it, but I am not sure if they will share it on FB, Tweet it and THEN click +1. Seems to be a lot to ask.

There's no direct punishment for buying a used domain. The problem comes in that you're probably not going to keep the same site structure. At this point you need to realize that you need an exhaustive 301 remap so you keep as much rank from the existing pages as possible. The bad things about a domain buy? Well, you're getting whatever reputation the old site had (links, reviews, social commentary, etc) and if that was negative that now becomes your responsibility.

Generally speaking words like insurance, attorney, lawyer, etc. pay well. Anything involving very high dollar figures can pay well. Hey, It's a little old, but Rand did a video about this that might help. http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboard-friday-domain-trust-authority Ultimately it comes down to how important your site is seen as been. If no one is talking about you, then you're perceived as not that relevant. Links are conversations, so the best probable metric to increase your score.

On your place i will use only the second domain because it have keywords in name. And the first i will redirect with 301to second domain.
