  • Without looking too deep into it, the authority is most likely coming from the domain level, not the subdomain. So the majority of the authority would only be passed if your particular page was linked to from their domain. If they can link to/301 redirect to your new domain, that would pass most of the authority.

  • I had a problem with this when auto-complete caome out. The name of the site I was working on had two words in the name, the first word was also the name of a competitors site. If you visited their site once, that was it... you weren't getting to the second word to find us! We saw a 30% drop in visits. Some of it came back, but not all of it. I discussed this with our Google rep at the time, and they assured me it had nothing to do with auto-complete, but I couldn't find any other explanation.

  • If you've got viagra spam pointing at your site you likely won't be able to remove them.  So should you disavow?  Disavowing a nofollowed link won't accomplish anything as disavowing is simply asking Google not to count the link and a nofollow link is already not being counted.  However, when you have loads of nofollowed links from spam attacks this is one situation where I often do go ahead and disavow these.  The reason for this is that one tactic that spammers can use is to point a bunch of nofollowed links at a site and then one day turn them all to followed.  If you've got them disavowed then you've got that covered. Also, if you have viagra links pointing to your site, make sure you don't have a hack within your site.  Try doing a google search for site:yourdomain.com viagra and see what comes up. For directories, I don't worry about things like dmoz scrapers and 100searchengines and stuff like that, unless somehow you managed to sneak a keyword anchored link into dmoz.  I wrote a thorough article on my thought process for auditing directory links here: http://searchenginewatch.com/sew/how-to/2360254/is-that-directory-link-unnatural

  • Hi Michael, Definitely check out the link Jim Rudnick has shared to the Local Search Ranking Factors 2014 survey. As you'll see from that, local search rankings are made up of a tremendous number of factors, with some having more weight than others. So, first, you want to be sure your client has all of his ducks in a row with the basics. Then, you should analyze his competitor to see if you can spot any weaknesses. We just published an interesting tutorial here on Moz for using our Check Listing tool for some cool competitive analysis. Check this out: http://moz.com/help/guides/local/check-listing The above how-to also gives some other research suggestions. Essentially, what your client needs to do is: Do all of the basics right Make a superior effort in some areas, such as content development, review acquisition and, possibly, social engagement Remember that rankings are not static. Over the past few years, it has been clear that one of the most important local search ranking factors relates to the physical location of a customer at the time he is making his search. You may hear this referred to as the customer/using being the 'centroid'. Particularly on mobile devices, where a customer is in town will influence whether your client or his competitor comes up first, based on the distance between the searcher and the business. It's really, really important educate all local business clients about this! Hope this helps!

  • Hi Richard Good shout, after doing some research it looks as though the page that has now been replaced with the homepage actually got 100% CTR for a search term that isn't really relevant to our service. Only 1 click though. However the relevant searches did get a good few impressions but didn't get a single click. I guess that is going to have something to do with the sudden change. Seems a bit harsh to take action with only 1 click ...

  • Stephen Ahh I see. This is a bit of a different question. I think you are asking "why do my inner pages not rank, and why does only my homepage rank"? I think we should zoom out and look at more the concepts of "keyword targeting" and site architecture. This can get pretty involved, and would be an entire blog post - but here's a few resources to check out first: http://moz.com/blog/visual-guide-to-keyword-targeting-onpage-optimization http://www.lunametrics.com/blog/2013/01/31/keyword-targeting-mistakes/ https://blog.kissmetrics.com/site-structure-enhance-seo/ To rank for "film crew jobs los angeles" the site needs a really dedicated page about that specific topic, that has information about that topic better than other websites out there. The site current does not it seems, so the homepage is ranking instead because Google does not have a better option to rank for that keyword. This doesn't have much to do with _how _the page is created, if it's a CMS, category page, etc - if the end result is a page that serves that search then you will have a much better chance of ranking it. Then you need to be sure you have an intuitive site architecture - this post is pretty good about that: http://www.seobook.com/getting-site-architecture-right
