  • The big question is how long ago did the URL change take place.  I have had similar circumstances when gaining new clients who had been working with some less then ethical companies and we found that after ~6 months there is little SEO value unless there are still good, active links pointing to those locations.  If there is still some good links pointing to the original location then you should regardless, but if not and it has been longer than 6 months I personally would not.

  • You pretty much nailed it. If the only reason is cosmetic (which I doubt has any influence on anything), there is absolutely no reason to risk losing top 5 rankings. Good luck! Side note.. Google's official stance is that 301s pass 100% authority but not worth testing. You are guaranteed to see a dip in rankings/organic traffic after you set up the 301s.

  • Hello there! Were you sure that were really empty domains? Have you checked whether had history of any kind with web.archive.org? What i'm understanding from your question is that the rankings were hurt just when the redirection impacted and indexed. Solution? do not redirect those domains to that kw. Just make a 301 to the home, root domain to root domain: empty-domain.com->main-domain.com Also, have you checked for any other reason for that drop in rankings? Bad backlinks, an increase in your competitors authority, bad own optimization or better competitors's optimization, or any other? Best luck. GR.

  • Hi there! Sorry for the trouble you're having with local listing updates. Generally we expect our directory partners to update their listing information within 8-12 weeks, but if you're not seeing movement in that time I would recommend reaching out to use at help@moz.com with your listing details. We can take a closer look at those partners and determine why they may not be updating. Thanks!

  • Hey James, Just want to offer a proviso here: the fact that Google localizes results automatically for queries they feel have a local intent does not mean that the optimization of the local business website can simply overlook local keywords. In fact, it's fundamentally important that each page you create targeting a specific city/neighborhood includes those city terms. Not only does this optimization signal to Google what your page is attempting to be relevant to, but it's also so important that human users know that your Sugarland page is for them in Sugarland, or that your Dallas page is for them in Dallas. I can see why Google's automatic localization of results might cause people to think they can overlook geographic optimization of the website, but to do so would be to fail to send the clearest possible signals of relevance to specific geographic intents or users-as-centroids.

  • Hi Becky, Multiple H1s isn't the serious issue it used to be for SEO. Still, well-organized heading tags are great for usability and can indicate to search engines that you have spent time creating a well-organized page. Search engines also have gotten pretty smart and understand that heading tags are also being used many times for stylistic purposes, so I don't think these are going to have a huge impact on crawl budget. Your site architecture (what's linking to what) is going to impact that, not necessarily whether a navigational element is labeled with a heading tag or not. If you want to take a stab at re-organizing the heading tags on your PDPs so they make more sense, particularly from an accessibility perspective, install the Fangs add-on in Firefox https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/fangs-screen-reader-emulator/ This will allow you to see your page as a screenreader would see it. Click on the "Headers" tab in the Fangs resulting page and you'll see something like this [screenshot attached] The numbers next to each bit of text represent the heading number attached to that text....notice how they are not in any kind of hierarchical order? Not a great experience for someone using a screenreader or for a search engine trying to understand what is important on this page. You could use this output list as a map and then number headings accordingly. There may be a good number of things that just don't need a heading at all, but that just need styles attached. Hope this helps! Dana vY4ad0J.png

  • We have connections to Barnardo's as a 'Professional Fundraising Group', meaning we support Barnardos monthly by donating/fundraising via just giving or simply sharing the name. We have had a link on their website for quite a while now, but we do ensure we post blogs updating on our achievements with the charity to make it as relevant as possible.

  • Thanks Lydia. I will expand on the internal links. I'm assuming: Links from within body copy (eg. product descriptions) is better than any kind of nav link? Anchor text needs to be mixed up and not all 'exact match' text? Thx

  • Thanks James for your responses. To clarify, there is indeed a good and necessary reason in this case to have a unique domain in each city under it's own brand. The other domains (or subdomains), are subsections of larger sites that already have their own established authority and users. In fact, the main site is unimportant except as the original place where the video content is published. That said, we understand duplicate content spread out over many domains is not going to work when it comes to SEO, so we're trying to figure out the best way to get the content (high quality timely videos) found in search and then passed along to the most relevant local site for that user. Your answer addresses my question about canonicalization and blocking crawlers, so thank you! If you happen to have any other thoughts on things we ought to be watching out for those thoughts would be welcome.

  • So to confirm, when claiming the business, when it asks if we deliver goods to customers at their location (which as I understand it is the point where you choose if it's a service area business), say "no." Keeping in mind of course that this is not a storefront location either, and other than the fact that the office is located in one city, there is no reason it is more or less relevant in that city than anywhere else in the world. It just seems like the whole My Business area is catered to local businesses with either storefronts or regional service areas, so it's always been unclear to me what to do about those businesses that don't have a regional focus.

  • Penalties are never a guarantee and we only have best practices to follow. The risk is there for sure. Duplicate content is never a great plan and for a 5-15 page website, the risk is not worth the reward in my books. Hire a copy writer and have them re-write it. What a GP offers from clinic to clinic are similar but what's unique is the doctor and location. Then do your typical local optimization work with listings, places and basic directories and you should be golden. This post will support my advice and provide context for a much larger business with a similar question: https://moz.com/community/q/duplicate-content-local-seo-250-locations Hope that helps. Brent
