Search Volume Discepancies
They're using different data sources and basing their assumptions on different metrics. Sometimes it can also be a matter of the location, if it's global search volume or on a national level.

Adding Location to Title Tags has dropped SEO Rankings
Hi! Can you give an example? The URL of the page, the old title tag, the new title tag, and the term in which you see the ranking drop.

Google suddenly indexing 1,000 fewer pages. Why?
Off the top of my head, some things to check: noindex tags deployed from staging during the redesign broken rel=canonical / hreflang update to robots.txt broken status codes (are those pages still 200 OK status?) site speed - has the performance of the site as a whole taken a hit? It needn't necessarily be about those pages specifically, but could be about the site health as a whole changes to XML sitemaps Some other harder to check / track down causes: changes to internal link architecture removal of pages that were the target of powerful inbound links Hope something there helps - good luck!

Massive local + national disconnect in rankings (local deindexed)
Hi Lawrence, I do think RickRoll's advice was good, and the first thing I would say is that you should leave those 301 redirects in place, on a page-to-page level, for a good long while - don't change them again. It looks like there are still some pages from boston.renthop.com in the index, which indicates that Google may not fully understand that these pages have all moved. There are only a few still in there, though, so I don't think that's the only issue. One thing that can happen when pages 404 for a while is that even if you 301 them later, the link equity of the original pages can disappear (it doesn't always, but it can). So you probably want to spend some time building links to these pages/site sections, and where you can, I also recommend reaching out to sites that linked to the old subdomains and asking them to update the links. I'd recommend trying to get new links from local-specific sites (i.e. sites about Boston or Chicago, vs. nationwide/non-local sites about apartment hunting), and here's why: In my experience, Google usually treats "{keyword} in {location name}" searches differently depending on whether or not you're actually in the location you're searching for. If you're not in the location, it treats {location name} as a keyword, but if you are in the location, it treats {location name} as a location. So for example, if you search "apartments in Boston" and you're not in Boston, it will show you pages that rank for the term "apartments in Boston" - but if you are in the Boston area, it will show you pages that rank for the term "apartments" and that have strong local indicators that they are in Boston, or more specifically, are near to you. So since you rank nationally but not locally for this term, it sounds like the signals you need to focus on improving are local signals. You can do this by building links from local sites, by adding e.g. "Boston, MA" to title tags on individual apartment listings, and by building out some unique, locally-focused content like neighborhood guides to add value to searchers from that area. I hope that helps!

What is the best way to deal with creating a separate brand with it's own website when the main site already ranks well for the target keywords?
We see a lot of people creating a second website, trying to rank for the same keywords as their main site - when their website isn't ranking well enough to do anything. That is crazy. You are in the perfect position to make a second website and use the popularity and power of your first site to drive it. Promote the second site on your main site, refer traffic there, link to it, advertise it, ask your tribe to help you.

Does the position of your main keyword phrase matter within the page?
Hello Donald Thank you for your reply. Apologies for not responding. I didn't get a notification! A new navigation grid was potentially going to push descriptive text below the fold. The new grid will have text overlying the grid images. As you have rightly said the key to an optimised design is to provide a good user experience and so we have juggled the elements about and put the description (including our keyword phrase) above the grid which moves it above the fold. Thanks again Catherine

SEO suggestions for a directory
Thanks for the pointers on things to focus on. Mainly, site architecture, linkbait, and responsiveness! Really appreciate your response. As mentioned to Donald, do you have any good suggestions on articles/videos/blogs I should follow?

Fresh Web Explorer for .com.au
Hey! Dave from the Help Team here, Unfortunately there isn't a way to filter results based off of country at this time, but I will certainly add this to our user insights! Here is a bit more on how Fresh Web Explorer works! We manage a list of RSS feeds that we have discovered from various sources and multiple times a day, we check all of those feeds to see if new posts have been added or updated. If they have, we crawl and index those posts. Once a week, we search Alltop to discover any new feeds that are not currently in our list, and add them. We also add any feeds from news sites we find as part of our Mozscape crawl. Hope this helps! You can also read more of our FWE FAQS here Hopefully that helps,

More or Less pages helps in SEO?
vtmoz, It is not the quantity of pages but the quality of pages. I would not put a number on pages. the more useful information you can give your target audience the more likely you are to rank higher. I would suggest the only main reason you should be comparing these metrics to competitors is how you can create content that is better than theirs. Look at those pages. Is there room for improvement? What value can you give to the target audience that the competitor is missing? This is how you beat your competitors and of course backlinks.

Could decreasing publishing frequency negatively affect our SEO?
Hi, I have been in the same position myself. I would recommend taking a look at all your old content like Anthony mentioned and find what has been really valuable to your users. See if you can create less and only on the topics that hit home. I would also think about using a writing service and then just have an editor review and change what is needed. You will cut the cost down tremendously. https://www.textbroker.com/ Does decent work, but you have to pick 4 or 5-star writers. You also have to make sure you brief is detailed so you get a good first round. Keep in mind this is not replacing writers just giving them original materials they can work with. I would also try out https://promote.quuu.co/ which does a good job with getting the content out there at a very low cost. You can get a better gauge on what is more shareable topics. It also can help get more inbound links. When you promote your posts this gives a faster and greater understanding to what works. Which brings me to the topic of gaining quality inbound links which in my opinion is one of the main reason for generating ongoing content. So I would look at how and where it is shared to gauge the quality of the content. Good Luck!

Help! Rankings dropping after optimising
Thank you very much for your response. After more research today and looking around the Q&A's on MOZ I thought that must be the best strategy. You response has confirmed that! Thank you again. I'm just really surprised that documentmanagementsoftware was ranking no.6 in February 2017... was there google updates that caused that to drop?

Sudden drop in external links... why?
Hi Brandon, It looks like you've changed the original question... The original question was to do with a drop in the number of internal links. Are you sure it's external links you are talking about? Cheers, David

New Website's Not Ranking for Branded Term
Hi Garrett, I agree with Dave - getting some inbound links and other press will help. Bing and Yahoo tend to rate keywords being present in the domain/URL more strongly than Google does, which may be why you're seeing it come up there. It looks like https://feello.com is now ranking on page 1 for "feello" - an incognito search I just did saw it at position 8, under the image carousel. One thing you might want to do, if you haven't already, is use Organization markup in schema.org to try to improve Google's Knowledge Graph entry for the business. That will help Google understand that Feello is a branded term, and that that brand is associated with your website. You should also use the "sameAs" schema.org property to link to your LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook pages, since Google is currently ranking those higher than your domain - that will help Google understand the relationships between those pages. Good luck!

How do I measure the results of my local spam crackdown?
Got it! Thanks for the further details. Now, if you're a Moz Local customer at the Professional level, you can sync up your GMB listing to your Moz Local dashboard and we'd show you month by month gains your listing was making in terms of impressions and cool KPIs like clicks-to-call, clicks-to-website and clicks-for-directions, but when it comes to absolute proof that your edits resulted in a reordering of the results, I'm not aware of a tool that would offer such proof. The problem is, your edits could be responsible for pack movement, but ranking changes can occur for so many reasons, like a Google update, a guideline violation, a competitor doing a better or worse job building authority or links. So, to say, "I did this and, presto, the rankings were affected," has to be more of a hypothesis than a provable fact, because there are just too many variables at play. What if the pack was partly impacted by what you did, but also partly impacted by the fact that a competitor just had malware show up on their website? You can't really track all those aspects. So, whether you take screenshots on a daily basis to track ranking changes, use analytics like Moz Pro, or are looking at the data in the Moz Local dashboard, I believe the best you can come up with is a theory, rather than absolute proof. If anyone in the community has another solution or suggestion, please share with us!
