  • I think having a dash is no longer a negative thing. Matt Cutts has made many open public statements about using dashes in the URL. We currently have a domain in an extremely competitive keyword "keyword1--keyword2.com". it's performing extremely well after about three months. It's also a brand new domain. If you do end up going with the newer domain, make sure you use a permanent redirect (301) from your aged domain to your new one. This will pass most, if not all, of your link juice to your new domain. Google also tends to give new domains a quick boost in SERPs. This usually doesn't last too long, but could be a welcome surprise if your website of high quality. Cheers! Dmac

  • Hi blackrino, As mentioned, to optimize keywords on your website it is recommended to use the keywords in the first 100 words of text on the site. More importantly, ensure the keywords are also utilized in the meta tags (title, description, and alt attribute) in your page source; this way, the text is easier for Google crawlers to read. Make sure the location of your business is notable on the landing page; you do not need to stuff the page with the exact keywords, but you can mention location more than once if necessary. As well, feel free to list your business address on the main page, and be sure to add your business to Google Places if you haven’t already.

  • No I meant use /blogs/ as the first page and /blogs/pX for the next pages, X being the pagination number. These pages are valid and are not 301 of course. BUT, /blogs/p1 is the same as /blogs/ so you should 301. AND you must be aware of inexistent pages in the pagination (p10000 because you don't have 10000 pages of paginated results; /blogs/p01 or /blogs/p02 because these pages should not exist)

  • Just the name makes me wary. When I searched on "free mass traffic software" on Google, I couldn't find a site with the software -- only affiliate sites promoting the software, offering little information about the software, and offering a cloaked affiliate link. All of those are warning signs to me. "Mass traffic" is not the same as "targeted traffic that helps me meet my goals". I run a site that sells products related to RC model warship combat. If I could somehow magically redirect 1% of all queries for Lady Gaga to my website, I'd have mass traffic that would likely not result in a single sale.

  • If the current site is built on asp the credentials to access the database must be stored somewhere within the application. It would usually be in a .config file. There is a small chance that the connection details would be encrypted - but in the days of ASP this was the exception to the rule. If you can find these connection details you will be able to get at least a read only view of the database and export the data. I find it strange that the owners of the site (whether that be you or a client you're working for) don't have the connection details of the db. If you really can't get db connection details then yes, scraping the article and importing into the new db would be the best way forward. Screen scraper basic edition should suffice for this (it's free) - http://screen-scraper.com/download/basic_choose_platform.php

  • Jaime, I'm a firm believer that there is no duplicate content problem except on-site - I would simply post the article on your site/blog and give a citation/link to the orignial source. I wouldnt bother but you could just post the first half and link on for the rest. This is after all what Google News does.

  • You can't have 2 HTTP codes on a page. I don't know what platform you are using for your products, but I would delete everything on the old site and put one (or several) scripts that does nothing but redirect 301 to the new site corresponding page. This requires some programming skills, htaccess + regular expressions and this should be done

  • I always advise people NOT to use the robots txt to block off pages - it isnt the best way to handle things. In your case, there may be two options that you can consider: 1. For variant pages, (multiple parameters of the same page) use the rel canonical to increase the strength of the original page, and to keep the variants out of the index. 2. A controversial one this, and many may disagree, but depends on situation basis - allow crawling of the page, but dont allow indexing - follow, no index, which would still pass any juice, but wont index pages that you dont want in the SERPs. I normally do this for Search Result Pages that get indexed...
