.htacess file format for Apache Server
Hi Karthik, I'd recommend posting a new Q&A question about this, as this is now a few months old and a bit buried. You might hold off until Tuesday US time, since we have a holiday tomorrow and there won't be nearly as many people online. When you do write your question, it would be helpful to add to your post what types of errors you get when you try to implement this -- just what you have tried, and what the results are. I also see that your site doesn't redirect non-www to www. If you want to fix that too, now would be a good time to ask about it. Keri

What link tracking solution do you use?
I use linkscape but I'm looking for a tool to manually add in backlinks and make sure they're still active. Linkscape also has a level of filtering where only some domains end up crawled completely.

How should 301 redirects affect Page Authority?
Richard - most likely, you're correct. PA, however, is an amalgamation of a lot of metrics combined via machine learning against Google's SERPs to produce the highest correlated metric with rankings. Thus, it could well be the case that this move doesn't boost PA (and PA itself recalculates/calibrates with each index). However, I wouldn't be too worried about PA - I would be worried about potential rankings and traffic, and it sounds like your solution should help with that (if you're combining like/duplicate content).

Which is better for SEO. 1 big site or a number of smaller sites.
It may be that when someone searches for product one that the site product-one-review.com is better than the product one page on the .com site all other things (links etc) being equal. However what happens if the visitor wants to buy product one and product two at the same visit and in the same transaction, would they have to jump between two different sites? Would there be duplicate content on the product one site about product two that was also on the product two site. There are non-SEO considerations to take account of. I would go for the .com site with pages devoted to and fully optimised for each product and then try and link build for those product pages. Hope this helps!

Why DBDResults.com is #1 on Google for "Internet Marketing Agency"?
In the internet archive, their old title was "DBD Results | Internet Marketing Agency". They're showing up at number 40 in Google right now for "Internet Marketing Agency". I just got spammed by them for a non-SEO site I own with a pitch for $500 a month for paid links. SEOmoz came up when I was looking to see what others had to say about them (after I left a reply telling them what I thought of their spam and choice of keywords for my site).

Switching to a .travel domain - (recommendations and suggestions)
Thanks very much for your thoughts Lewis. The risk you were talking about are the ones which let me doubt to go through with this or not. right now our website url is www.mantarayatravel.com and i would like to switch to just mantaraya.travel as colombia.travel is doing. I dont have any evidence why google should give more weight to a .travel domain i assume that .travel sites within the travel category might get more weight, its just a personal assumptions.. Mantaraya.travel is shorter and can be seen seperated in "mantaraya" and "travel" and so easier to be remembered. As well its an assumptions. But your point regarding .com sites more or less convinced me and now before high season i dont wont to risk a downfall of the search volumen. I then only dont know why companies even buy .travel domains or industry specific domains if .com or country specific TLD are the best choice. But this is another question.

Ranking reports don't seem to match reality
Your reality will almost certainly be different to another persons. I tend to use a number of ranking checkers (every so often) just to compare results. As long as your avg. position is staying in the area you want it to be then I wouldn't worry too much. DD

Best cross linking strategy for micro sites?
Thanks Russ, that's just the kind of information I need to know If I raise the value of the micro site will it not increase the value of the link? Or again do you not see it being worth the effort? I do not mind being too overt with the link as it has become such a good resource that competitors are linking to it even knowing we are behind it. Another reason to maintain the site is it generates a lot of good click through traffic. A second related question as I dig into this deeper. As I mentioned, we received a lot of links from some high value sites to individual sub pages on the micro site. After 6 months, could I look at adding a 301 from those pages to my main site? Maybe a with a duplicate of the original content being linked to... And lastly, a lot of my showcase content is getting copied and pulled into "Best 50..." posts with no link backs. I have emailed and asked with moderate success to get links back. Has anyone a strategy for increasing back links in a situation like this? Maybe hidden or overt watermarks? (Not too overt or it will lower the value to current visitors). Or perhaps I should be looking at a more radical option of moving the entire micro site into a sub domain or sub directory of my main site... Sorry for the stream of questions. New to the more technical aspects of SEO and trying to put a strategy around what started on a whim.

Whats the value difference in related and non related link?
Links do not have to be related to the topic of the website that is being linked to. Unfortunately, because google's exact ranking algorithm is unknown, I dont think there is a percentage difference that can be placed on the value. It would be a good idea to keep your overall unrelated links lower, as well as making sure there are no potential spam signals that can be triggered from the domain names who are linking to you.
