  • There is link-less citation value in having your business name, address and phone number on any indexed document in Google (in my opinion) Since you mentioned that you are a local company, I believe there would be value in the release from an SEO standpoint assuming the release is high quality and provides value, describing an interesting product or service you market.

  • Hi Leigh. This will depend on a number of things. How old is the site? Have you been link building? What else have you done in terms of SEO? If the site is new and you have only recently begun working on the site it may take a month or two for Open Site Explorer/Linkscape to pickup your site.

  • Scary stuff, Brian. I know that sinking feeling. Just got bombed myself. Whether by Panda, because of user experience or a little too over optimized anchor text, I am not sure yet. Two weeks and my ranking have yet to come back. Clean up the site, remove the bad links and cross your fingers for a speedy return is about all you can do. Good luck with it.

  • Hi, Just a few things to start... Use your name ... IAC is not automatically known to the world and since your name includes what you do, I would lose the abbreviation in most instances and take advantage of the value inherent in your name. rename your page files using targeted keyword phrase for each page follow the advice Daniel posted Hope that helps

  • What if your site is a large ecommerce site?  I'm working with someone who just had their site rebuilt and none of their pages fall into a hierarchy category>category options> product.  You go to the category page and then when you go to another, your url extension is completely unique.  Is this going to hurt them in the long run? Keep I'm already having them change some of the URLs because they are useless extensions that don't match the pages and are no good for SEO that way. Should they seriously consider restructuring too? Thanks!

  • While I can't comment on how SEOmoz did it, here is a link on how to create a similar app using the Drupal framework: http://blog.attomsoft.com/drupal/122/how-to-build-a-stackoverflow-or-yahoo-answers-like-system-using-drupal-part1

  • I agree with the previous responses that the blog should probably be a subsection. A key question to ask is whether the blog will attract links either naturally or through a link building program.  A blog that stands a change of obtaining significant traffic and links, and features content that is independent from the main website is a candidate for a root level domain. However, from your brief descriiption, this does not seem to be the case with your blog

  • If you are happy with any URLs with query strings not being indexed your robots.txt will work fine. Do any or your URLs with question marks in them have links to them?  If so you might want to be careful blocking google from indexing them.  I would think you'd lose the benefits those links would pass to your site.

  • There is data out there that suggests Google updates rankings for less competitive keywords less often. So even though your backlinks may have disappeared a long time ago, its possible your position in the SERPs is only now being adjusted. Its also possible that you or sites linking to you were hit by the panda update. In terms of what to do about it, I wouldn't advise going "wild" with backlinks, like you say above. Use some of the strategies you can find here on SEOmoz to develop quality backlinks and a good user experience.

  • I don't see any reason why you would do this unless you are trying to manipulate the search engines. I would expect that Google and Bing would eventually find a way to ignore these links if they haven't done so already.
