  • This has been the way for ages now. As Alan said, YSE is okay, OSE is great, but nowhere can you get a full list, especially not an up-to-date one.

  • The minimize url length is always better. Keep it minimized, IE allowed maximum of 2000 characters which is too long. Less then 100 is good and less is even better. B option is good, going into sub-categories make it lengthy.

  • Great question. It really depends on the directory. As a general rule, if the directory is advertising that is "sells links," those links are likely to be valueless, or potentially even detrimental. On the other hand, directories that have fees for "editorial review" (i.e. dir.yahoo.com, etc), are less likely to have that problem. Generally speaking, if a directory is specifically relevant to your site (i.e. content and/or geography), the directory will likely have more value than a general biz, or non-relevant directory. I also like to stick to relevant directories with DA equal to or higher than the site that I'm submitting. In my humble opinion, the value of submitting to a large number of low quality directories, as well as, article directories, is very low if not non-existent. However, if you find higher quality directory links in your competitors' back link profiles, they may be worth the investment.

  • Hi Garry, A focus on two or three main keywords on your page is perfectly appropriate, even for longer tail keywords. It may be recommended to use longer tailed keywords for pages on your site appropriate for such keywords. As well, it is recommended to put the keyword(s) as close to the beginning of each tag as possible. Keywords can be combined to create longer tail keywords, but only if they are relevant to each other; try to put two unrelated phrases together will look like spam. If your business is located in a certain area, using long tail keywords with location can help your results; with other keywords, your site can still rank for longer tail keyword due to natural relevancy. With a focus of more than three keywords, your tags will be bulky and read unnaturally.

  • Well, lets hope that when they sort the h1 issue, it goes higher still I didn't check the source to look at the CMS, is it a custom CMS? Re: it's existing rankings, although h1's are important, like most SEO triggers, they are just a part of the pie... if everything else is taken care of nicely, then rankings are still possible even without optimised h1 tags. Oh, and thanks for taking the post the right way!

  • Okay Damon, email sent. I would maybe edit your message above, to remove your email. I know seomoz is more secured against spam bots than most forums due to being a subscription based membership, but even so it may be safer for you anti-spam wise, to not leave it in plain text, but obviously your choice there "Freebies are good . . ." - Well, when you spend so promoting websites for money, it is nice to sometimes help just for the sake of helping, and publishing your release won't cost me any money, or much time - so glad to help out. I like seomoz Q & A forums, it has a much stronger atmosphere of collaboration than most other webmaster or seo forums I have been on over the years, so I am happy to try to 'do my bit' as I know in the future, I will undoubtedlybe asking, and receivingadvice from others! - what goes around, comes around... Cheers Damon!

  • I believe that you can still take a site from nowhere to the top of very competitive SERPs.  However you are going to need fantastic content or a fantastic budget and maybe some of both.  Plus you will need some smart smart SEO and social media abilities to make it happen. Ten years ago there were a lot more small websites run by individuals that were "high quality sites of the day".  Today most of those sites have been wiped out by multiple Goliath sites in their niche.  Big sites like wikipedia take one or two spots on the first page. Ten years from now competition will be insane and we will look back at 2011 as the "easy days of the web". When I was a kid there were a couple small stores on every residential street in town. People sold from a room in the font of their house.  When I was a teenager small "markets" in every neighborhood clobbered the "front room stores".  When I was in college a "supermarket" on each end of town clobbered the small markets.  Then even bigger supermarkets came into dominance and today the SuperWalMart and SuperKMart are killing the supermarkets.   The same thing will happen on the web.

  • I'm not sure on that one, but I'd be surprised if you couldn't as you can do so in Adwords and that's where Youtube gets its ads.

  • Sometimes you see a bit more organic (in terms of people just naturally linking to things) indexation of content if pages are dynamically generated by a user selecting the amenity, location, etc, and then the database creates the page on the fly and then someone links to that.  Still it's nice to have a bit more control over page URLs  and give them a bit more established, static presence ahead of time. I wouldn't worry about their release in regards to amount.  Just make sure they function, have sitemaps indicating the new content, and try to drum up a press blitz on the new amount of pages in social and conventional space. Google does well with large increases if it sees a correlated increase in search or press.
