  • I noticed a lot of Adsense in prominant places on your pages, even a big banner from on-line dating. Is the site doing well with AdSense? If so, you visitors may read a little of what you offer then click through to the next site. I know if I see a site covered in ads, I am more likely to return to google and check the next option. The ads Google Adsense is applying are also quiet out of context. e.g. Imagine a big burly bikie visits your site to read about motorcycles, does he see an ad for Harley Davidson, no he is presented with ones on 'trying to conceive', how does adsense make that connection? Also people love to see active fresh content and the dates on your entries as I click each of the top links show 2009 or 2010 articles. There is also significant time span between articles inside the one topic. As Egol says have allok at high retention sites and see what you are doing different. If you cover such a broad range of topics, users may just be interested in the specific one they came to see. I would also suggest to move 'recent comments' and 'recent searches' higher toward the top of the column and login further down. If you want people to click through to other article on your site then make sure they are prominent. I also see 'leave a comment' but do not see any comments just ads. To lower bounce rate you need to provide information relevant to your visitor have fresh content make it easy for the visitor to find other interesting articles decide if you want ads or visitors There is my quick usability study.

  • You mean monitoring as in you just want to see what's going on? Social Mention, Ice Rocket, Board Reader, Search.Twitter, Google Blogsearch, etc, etc, etc. If you just want to see what's going on now and then, I'd set up what some people call a social media listening station. It's pretty straightforward, is very flexible, and runs through whatever your favorite RSS reader is. If you need more, take a look at the answers here: http://www.quora.com/What-social-media-tools-like-Radian6-SM2-etc-cost-less-than-500-month

  • If the external site links to what Google considers a 'bad neighbourhood', then yes, the external site linking to the doorway page might get penalised but it isn't normally an instant penalty, but after Google figures it out through their various algorithms.

  • you might want to put a ticket in on this if it persists. I know some of my pages take a couple weeks to filter through.

  • To quote W3C draft specification on HTML5 Attributes are placed  inside the start tag, and consist of a name and a value, separated by an "=" character. The attribute value can remain unquoted if it doesn't contain spaces or any of  " ' ``` = <  or >. Otherwise, it has to be quoted using  either single or double quotes. The value, along with the "=" character, can be omitted altogether if the value  is the empty string. The accepted convention is " but according to the standard both are supported. P.S. Is a version of your site live, if so I would maybe like to blog about it as it is related to what we are doing in baby toddler items (looking at your avatar).

  • Do yourself a favor and take my advice. I'm speaking from the experience of having managed projects of 22,000+ page websites based on templates. DO NOT use Dreamweaver templates! They will make your life a nightmare if you ever need to scale. Templates are good for newbies or small, simple websites but will turn into a major problem if you ever need to get professional with web development. Even if you plan on starting off small, you may eventually want to scale and if you build sites around templates will need to later re-code hundreds or thousands of pages to break them out of templates and into SSI. There is nothing more beautiful than updating a footer across an entire 10,000 page website with nothing more than a single file upload.

  • This is really exciting!  I've configured the code to put a line after the video that says, "Want this video on your website? Here's the code:" and then if they use the code intact it will show the video with a line underneath that says, "Courtesy of mywebsite."

  • Thanks for the replies! Yeah, I assumed they might take a few months to update as the pages may not be indexed straight away, so I'll hope that's the case. I've written some good content on our Blog that should filter through and sent out a press release today that's gone out to 10,000+ people via PRWeb. I'm hoping that will build up a few links and create a discussion of some kind on our blog but we'll have to see. Thanks for the tips so far, if anyone else has anything to add. Please let me know. Cheers Lewis

  • Thanks for your response Aaron. Thats why I asked the question because we have done some 301ing in the past and I am pretty sure PR was transferred pretty sharply however, it does not seem to have done so on this occasion. Cheers

  • I agree with your decision to get back into the hard business of earning links. IMO that is more important than your three questions. **1. Ditching links in the nav....  ** Is anybody clicking those links and processing to cart?  If nobody is doing that then I would ditch them - especially if those pages are not pulling organic SERP traffic. 2. Sub-cats.... I would try this and let sales be the deciding factor.  It might have more impact there than in SEO. 3. Anything else... This niche has become really really competitive since you launched this site.  Everybody is working hard to eat your lunch.  I agree with your analysis that linkbuilding is the urgent need.
