• Hi Sarah, My gut tells me the truth is a combination of the two tools. It does look like a highly competitive keyword from an organic point of view. The top 3 ranking results are the National Institute of Health and Wikipedia - all of which would be hard to beat. But it's not a highly commercial term - so I bet the CPC would be lower for PPC than many other comparative terms. That said, you can still win with a long-tail SEO strategy. It does require work and effort. But the idea is you would create lots of high quality content around this keyword theme and try to rank for potentially 100s of variations and similarly themed content. This strategy, when done with sincere effort, often succeed against the most competitive of terms. That said, it does require a lot of time and effort and energy. If you're looking for quick results, PPC may be the way to go for you. Keep in mind as soon as you stop paying for PPC, the returns stop immediately, while good content can drive traffic for years after the initial investment. (if it sounds like I'm preaching, I'm really not - I actually run PPC ads all the time when appropriate) Hope this helps! Best of luck.

 • Hey, Thanks for the question. In your campaign settings you can enter up to three different competitors and view their rankings as compared to yours for any keywords you've entered to track. If you're looking for a standalone on-the-fly rankings you can check out the rank tracker (https://moz.com/researchtools/rank-tracker) but that won't automatically show it compared to you. I hope that helps. Cheers, Joel.

 • Hi Marcus I'm going to just go through a bunch of items in no particular order; Internal links in footer - the anchor "private dental practice in york" linking to the homepage is a little over-optimized.  As is linking to the marketing and web design companies with exact commercial anchors. The actual brand name is a little unclear. Is it "fresh Smiles" or "FreshSmile" or "fresh dental" or "fresh dental smile clinic"? It's super important to have this clear to make a strong brand presence. "Fresh dental smile" and "fresh smiles" don't return a normal "branded" search result with 8 or 10 sitelinks. See this screenshot for an example. This has to be 100% clear on-site and off-site, especially in local listings. The homepage title tag for example is a bit overdone. It should be the main keyword / service and the brand name. Also, "cosmetic dentist" appears in almost every page title tag. You want to avoid repetition, have the titles describe the page well, while fitting in the main keyword for that page. Follow Google's guidelines on titles. For back links, there's definitely some over optimization going on - see Open Site Explorer's anchor text report - and the use of anchors like "dentists in york" "dentist york" etc is a bit excessive. Get those anchors changed to brand names if possible. Believe it or not, there's just too many links in general, and many of them are keyword links. What I mean is - you're not ever naturally going to see 100's of back links for a dentist. Google knows this. So it sends a red flag to have too many low quality over optimized links. I would stress obtaining a few links but of super high quality. Social Media - the facebook feed for example is just a blast of "push" marketing - teeth services, photos and so forth. Very minimal activity in general. They should pick maybe one social network that aligns with where their customers are and use it as a communication medium - a place where patients can leave messages, the office can post fun and engaging things. See Social Media Examinar for plenty of social ideas - I recommend possibly using either Pinterest or Instagram as well. Twitter doesn't make much sense for a dentist. I am mentioning social media because in my opinion it helps SEO. Rel Publisher - even if they're not posting activity on Google Plus (same as the Google places page now) use Rel Publisher to connect their website to their G+ page. Check that its set up correctly with the rich snippet tester Site speed seems poor - here's a test result from webpagetest - note that many of the images (like this one) are taking almost 1 second each to load. You definitely want to try to get those to say 50-75k with some compression etc. Site speed is a small ranking factor as well as UX factor for visitors. The site has a lot of pages indexed for a dentist web site - over 1,000 as you can see here. What I would do is see if they are all getting traffic (check in analytics) - and HIGHLY consider killing off pages like this: http://www.freshsmiles.co.uk/teeth-straightening-in-york/ which are is a blog post format, designed to just target a keyword and even the image is broken now. There are a LOT of pages like that indexed. Here's another: http://www.freshsmiles.co.uk/we-also-offer-patients-facial-rejuvenation-treatments/ - this will all seem like thin content for sure, and affect rankings. As you can see, a lot to work on! I don't think any one thing is going to fix the site, it's going to have to be a bunch of improvements. EDITED TO ADD: I would just kill the tag archives. Remove them from navigation and delete them. Check to see if a few might be getting traffic (using my method here) and 301 redirect the few that might be and just remove the rest. I was trying to crawl the site, and it's already queued up to over 1,500 pages - most of them tag archives.

 • If a directory has good page rank, there may be some value there, but that needs to be tested and proven. If there is a good directory of directories, this is it: http://info.vilesilencer.com/top

 • Unfortunately we usually appear to learn more from huge problems than from nice and successful experiences... That’s the massive profit on sharing; we can profit from others experience! Cheers ]()

 • Thank you for your reply! I knew it i just thought that it had such a strong pr (6) that it is a huge loss even if Google decreasing the focus from it. I also saw the authority metrics growing on the new domain which means that the new domain got some of its authority from the old. Perhaps we should wait another pr refresh. I tried to convince them to redirect the subpages to relewant new subpages but they wanted the hole previous version and the old domain to disappear. Thank you for your reply!

 • Hey Everyone, Starting yesterday afternoon, we had a an outage that caused the reports permissions to fail. The issue is now corrected and you should be able to run new reports with no issue, but we are still working to regenerate the reports that were requested during the outage with the proper permissions. In the meantime, you can re-create reports that you are unable to download if you are unable to wait for a final resolution for the original reports. I apologize for the inconvenience this causes. Please let me know if you need any further assistance. Chiaryn

 • I'd second your recommendation for Appthemes' Vantage. I've used it before with a client and it's a great theme. The developers are pretty responsive (if you'll pardon the pun) to questions as well.

 • I have mentioned this a number of times but will rgab the opportunity and say it again.Nobody can fix google's algorith, not even Google itself. It's out of their hands, always was, always will be. The past already shows, that their algorithm gets a lot of things wrong and penalized small biz and ranks spam high, you all got examples of that. They are already bad at identifying machines or humans. Assuming they will go for keyprhases such as Marie Haynes is a writer for example.com...", or "Visit my website at example.com" is simply impossible, for thishappen 99.9% of the guest post authorship tag must include the same keyphrase which i doubt. I find more likely to devalue for example ALL authorship links or even anything with /blog/ in its url, but for that to happen it would mean that 99% of the blogs have the same phrasing which I doubt. If you are wondering how they will try to minimise that, my pov is that they will take into account a couple things such as 1)frequency of posts, 2) how many of these posts are original content and 3)OBL which to my surprise noone mentions here. Matt refers to spam sites that are there for link selling purposes. If you follow his tweets and his latest activities you would know he is after the private blog networks advertised on the most popular black hat forum on the internet. What does that mean? that the algorithm cant track them thus he is trying to figure it out manually. Black Hat SEO is the art of making a machines work to look like it has been done by a lot of humans. Google's job on the other site is to find out who's the human and who's the machine. Google gets better at identifying machines, so the SEO industry gets better at mimicking human behaviour. Guest Blog is an area that got abused but trust me there is a difference having a guest blog on a PR5 site, with unique content and 1-2 links and a total OBL of less than 30 than a guest blog of 500 words with 3 EM ancor links on high competitive keyprhases and roughly 20 comments with link in them. Then again in this case OBL would explode so why would you want a link like that anyway? You lose the value thus wasting money, time and resources.

 • I wrote a post a couple of months ago which analysed a load of Mozcast data and one of the subjects I touched upon was EMDs and PMDs. Looking at that data I'd say don't bother switching domains. The reason, to quote directly from the post is that "Looking purely at the trends, the proportion of listings with exact (EMD) and partial (PMD) matched domains is definitely going down. A few updates in particular have had an effect: One huge jolt in December 2012 had a particular and long-lasting effect, knocking 10% of EMDs and 10% of PMDs out of the listing" The conclusion was that "if you plan on creating useful, interesting content for your industry then go ahead and buy a domain with a keyword or two in. You could even buy the exact match domain, even if that doesn't match your brand (although this might give people trust issues, which is a whole different story). But if you don't plan on creating that content, buying a keyword-matched domain looks unlikely to help you, and you could even be in for a more rocky ride in the future than if you stick to your branded domain."
