  • There's lots of good usability info available, but the main problems are: text that is too small not enough contrast between the text and the background Contrast isn't just a problem caused by the colour of the text (but avoid the gray on gray text!) it's also caused by the weight of the font. The vogue for thin fonts also reduces contrast and readability. To compensate the text needs to be larger. Not everyone has the eyes of a teenager! If you can - test your designs on someone(or more than one person) who represents your target audience. You'll also want to consider the devices/resolution that your audience will be using. (kids with smartphones vs retired people with older desktops and low resolution displays. Also keep line length in mind - especially with responsive design.   • Hi, If you're worried about the Freshness factor for search, I don't believe it specifically applies to individual pages such as your product page.  It doesn't make sense to constantly update your images or product description to keep your product content fresh.  If you look around, you don't see a lot of eCommerce sites constantly update their product descriptions. I believe this factor applies to the website as a whole.  As long as there are new and fresh activities going on your website such as new reviews that Moosa mentioned below, it should be fine.  I believe you will also be adding more products and updating landing pages which already satisfy the "freshness factor." I would suggest spending more time on other factors if you're just thinking about Search Engine. My 2 cents

  • Great question, and great answers from some of the other commenters. I've struggled with this question myself in building landing pages. The 20% rule is a good one, and makes sense, especially as Google gets better at semantic search and "keywords" become a bit less important in favor of query meaning. In a perfect world (one where search engines could understand queries the way your friend would when you told him what you searched for), if you cannot come up with 20% of a landing page that is entirely unique to that page, it's not something you should be building a landing page for. In the world we operate in, it's a nice guideline. My method for long tail landing page creation is: figure out what the head keyword that this long tail landing page is most related to (if you are trying to reuse the same value prop), and just rewrite every sentence. You should alter your word choice, sentence structure, and page organization (it's a nice opportunity to test those things as well, a long tail page that does unexpectedly well may give you some insight into a better converting format). At this point, I add the unique content. For keywords that aren't different enough to have true unique content, I'll generally write a section summarizing a few of the others all together, or add a different customer testimonial. To the commenter who mentioned that you can create unique content to search engines, but humans would laugh - a landing page for long tail keywords really shouldn't be something a customer can get to without coming to it from an external referrer. The root domain shouldn't link out to both domain.com/landing-page-head-kw and domain.com/landing-page-long-tail-kw.

  • Hi Moosa: Actually we were hit by Penguin in April 2012, and then by Panda 4.0 (for thin content) in late May of this year. Regarding the Penguin issue, we identified bad links, requested removal and filed a disavow with Google listing the domains that refused to remove links. We are also re-writing as much content as possible. In terms of creating links, I have been instructed that the best way to do so is to create high quality onsite content that others will link to. So I am hoping we are on the right track. But getting back to my original question, I don't know why the home page has been punished disproportionately. Thanks, Alan

  • But beware some translation services based on automated systems that generate content 'almost duplicated', no matter the cost of the company that is hired, but the quality of the result and that these translations incorporating 'an extra' more human.

  • Its not a new website (3 and half years) we think its 301s on our product lines (200 URLS) whats the quickest way to deal with 301s - dont want to be writing up a spreadsheet of every url that we stick into htaccess file!

  • As I understand it, you are asking about rendering the same content to two different domains that differ entirely in the tld (.au & .nz). Based on my reading of Google webmaster guidelines, if the only difference is the domain and what country the visitors are from, you should not have any issues so long as you use rel-alternate-hreflang as you described. If you have multiple domains targeting the same users, just be sure to add a rel="canonical" tag. Google's webmaster guidelines state: "Websites that provide content for different regions and in different languages sometimes create content that is the same or similar but available on different URLs. This is generally not a problem as long as the content is for different users in different countries. While we strongly recommend that you provide unique content for each different group of users, we understand that this might not always be possible. There is generally no need to "hide" the duplicates by disallowing crawling in a robots.txt file or by using a "noindex" robots meta tag. However, if you're providing the same content to the same users on different URLs (for instance, if both example.de/ and example.com/de/ show German language content for users in Germany), you should pick a preferred version and redirect (or use the rel=canonical link element) appropriately.   • Long as you have the 301 redirects set up properly, you should be good. Bing webmaster tools has it's own "Site Move" feature but I'm not sure you need to use it.

  • Hi It will be the same as putting on the main domain.  It will get crawled as part of the main site.  Blogs tend to site on sub domains, so start with www.blog.xxxx.com  or the shop could be www.shop.xxxx.com Bruce
