The importance of url's - are they that important?
David/MaxOnce again, thank you very much for such detailed information. This has been really helpful and I'm truly grateful. I do have one more question if I may. The main primary domain name contains the word "wood" - is it really essential to contain the word "wood" into "sub categories" also (as seen below)? You can see how we're planning to structure the site. Many of our key words have the word wood, so for obvious reasons this term is essential. Take a good amount of existing landing pages offline because of low traffic, cannibalism and thin content
If you remove a URL and allow it to 404 you can either remove it in GWT as well, or wait for them to update it. I would remove it in GWT as well just to be sure. There is no difference whether you have the files on the server or not unless the redirect comes down someday for awhile (even for an hour), which could result in all of those pages being reindexed. Other potential issues are if you have the site available on another domain or sub-domain that points to the same folder, in which case your redirects might not work on the other domain, depending on how they were written. For these reasons, I would go ahead and remove the files from the server just to be safe. You can back them up somewhere local or at some point before the "Public HTML" folder on the server.

My linked in profile is showing up the opensite exploer but not showing up in on page grader, any ideas why? the onpage grader says in url is in accessible
Hello! The metrics you see for any domain is based on other domains that link to their site. We actually cannot crawl LinkedIn.com as they block us from crawling their page. Our tools check for any disallow directives for any URL entered and the URL error you are receiving is a result of their robots.txt configuration. Hope this helps!

Stopping these scum sites from sending traffic.
I agree with others, and would disavow before it causes you issues. That is the safest way to protect yourself.

Why are only a few of our pages being indexed
Thanks for this. The /item-details/ are linked to from the Auction pages (e.g: https://www.wilkinsons-auctioneers.co.uk/auction-items/?id=13) We've looked into the canonical issue and sorted that out, so fingers crossed on that being the issue. I'm only really familiar with canonical being a pain with ecommerce sites, but I know to keep an eye on it for others sites we have using parameters/custom pages.

Embed video. YouTube or Vimeo ? Whats best for the pagespeed ?
I use YouTube. It is great, as PixelbyPixel said, it is another engine giving you exposure. Not to mention it has a DA of 100 which is a very credible linking source. And it is owned by Google, so my guess is, the engine prefers it as well.

Duplicate Content Home Page http Status Code Query
Try using something like LiveHTTPHeaders to view all of the HTTP requests and responses involved. You should see the request going to the redirected domain (GET domain.co.uk) and then the response such as HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently followed by a new request to the new domain (GET domain2.co.uk) and the response will naturally be HTTP/1.1 200 OK because the server at the new domain has answered the request successfully.
