  • Hey there Since you are using a CMS just about everything will show up as a page…especially if you are using WordPress. I would suggest disallowing the indexing of these pages. Even if you were able to get meta description tags in there, they wouldn't do anything for your SEO since they are just one image on a page. If you are using WordPress, there is a setting in the backend that stops the indexing of media pages. That will stop this problem you are having. Hope that helps!

  • If you have a lot of people in your circles, the +1s they have given can have some affect on the search results you see when you are signed into Gmal. It is part of how Google personalizes your search results. There truly isn't a huge difference, but you could see a different result if you are signed in as opposed to not being signed in.

  • Hi! I would look at the source of the traffic first (they have to be coming from somewhere) or IF the site has injected codes. I've seen this happen before. Injected codes (invisible or not) then they spam you with links and traffic from different countries. Some country specific traffic gets more visibility hence more traffic from there. I hope it's not but it's better to be safe and check if you were hacked. I wont point at the competitor yet as that's a very minimal thing in terms of SEO. It just messes up your stats though.

  • In 2011 Matt Cutts advised that Google does limit on redirect chains - he indicated the Googlebot won't follow more than around 3 or 4. No limit on the total number of single-level 301s. In your specific situation I would redirect both the original and the first replacement to the new replacement so that users and bots can reach the new page in a single redirect hop.

  • Hi, Were you able to get the desktop site responsive? If not you may have seen an impact from the Mobile Friendliness Update in April (21st). In terms of whether it's preferable to have a good desktop site and no mobile version, or a mobile version which is not correctly set up for SEO, I'd lean towards suggesting that you do put the mobile version live for the short-term while you are working to make the desktop site responsive. At least this way your mobile users can have a better UX, and if you correctly implement the switchboard tags Google should be able to tell what the pages are for. Of course having a good SEO implementation on the mobile site should improve your mobile rankings, but failing that my suggestion would be to check first of all how your desktop-only site currently ranks on mobile, and then test what happens if you were to turn on the mobile version (or possibly even just a few key mobile-friendly pages). Another factor would be how likely your users are to be accessing your site on mobile - if it's a small percentage, you may have nothing to worry about; if a large percentage of your user base are likely to be on their phones, having a good mobile experience is going to be vital not only for mobile traffic but also for conversion. That said, a well-optimized mobile site is just as valid an approach as responsive. Google recommend responsive simply because this is often the simplest way to implement a mobile friendly design; however they do not penalise sites that utilize the 'separate mobile site' approach as long as the two versions are accessible to all Googlebot user agents. And you can also utilize the switchboard tags to help explain to Google that the mobile version is linked to the desktop version. Either way, I'd strongly encourage you to get either a well-optimized mobile site or a responsive site as soon as possible, as it seems likely that mobile-friendliness will become increasingly necessary .

  • Hi SEO Martin, I'm trying to figure out your exact question. Are you wondering whether you should noindex the "empty" pages? Are you trying to figure out how to identify all the pages that are producing errors? Or something else?

  • Google does not like what you are doing! Google wants to have the same content on a page  (that rules out option a) Option B sounds better. but make sure the copy is still on the page. Just vary the content you are presenting based on the user. (this is called the liquid internet)

  • JStrong, Just to make sure we're all on the same page: Although Google uses the phrase "Structured Data..." I don't think they mean it in the same was as you would use, for example, Schema markup in the code. The example there is simply a meta description, which you can use for whatever purpose you like. It could be worth testing the Click-Through-Rate on meta descriptions like that (a metric you can see in Google Webmaster Tools) to decide if you want to use it, though for my money I'd bet on a description with a clear value proposition, offer, call to action, emotion, etc... that will also have their keywords bolded if they appear in the description. If you do test it out please share what the effect on CTR in the SERPs was from GWT. Just because I'm curious.

  • 410 means "Gone" and is used to indicate a resource no longer exists. If it exists use 200 (OK). If it is out-dated place a notice to that effect but still leave it as 200. Putting a noindex instruction in the robots meta element should be sufficient to remove it from the Google index, though it may take some time. Nofollow is probably not what you want to do as this will destroy any link value flowing through those pages. If it is so out-dated that it is considered valueless then it should be deleted and 410'd. A 301 redirect can be used where a new resource that substantially replaces the old resource has been created. Not sure why you would want to keep Google's index of your site 'lean' unless you have a lot of resources competing for the same keywords and are concerned about cannibalization.

  • Get new, better quality links ASAP, before or while you're disavowing It depends on your outreach methods - I had ~50% removal rate with one of our sites which is multiple times higher than the average. You can just disavow and hope it works or you can get as many links removed as possible, disavow the rest, then hope it works. I'd go with the latter.
